ATHENS – Ohio put seven different players in double figures while beating Miami-Hamilton 102-59 on Monday afternoon at The Convo.
Freshman Jordan Fisher led the way by scoring 17 points in just 13 minutes after he had played only 10 minutes and scored two points so far this season. Dior Conners had a season-high 16 points in 15 minutes, and Kiir Kuany just missed his career high with 15 points.
“These games sometimes are tough as a coach, sometimes as a player too, because you can get kind of in a selfish mode, and our guys did not do that,: Ohio head coach Jeff Boals said. “I think that's great leadership and the character of those guys in the locker room. That's another reason we play this game right: to get guys like him (Jordan Fisher) minutes and get some experience.”
Ajay Sheldon went 4 of 6 on 3-pointers and scored 12 points, Jesse Burris added 12 points, and both JJ Kelly and Javan Simmons scored 10 points. Three other players scored as 11 different players got at least 13 minutes on the court, even with leading scorer Jackson Paveletke sitting out.
National champions last season in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division II, the Harriers (6-5) hung tough for a while, trailing just 18-15 near the midway point in the first half, but the Bobcats (6-7) took over near the end of the first half.
A Simmons layup began a 10-0 run that gave Ohio a 39-23 lead with 4:18 remaining. The Bobcats led 52-34 at halftime and then went on a 12-0 run early in the second half to go up 66-36. Even while rotating in every available player, Ohio ended the game by scoring the final nine points.
Fisher went 6-of-9 shooting from the field and made 4 of 6 free throws and also had two assists and two steals.
“It feels great, probably one of the greatest feelings of my life,” Fisher said. “Not many freshmen get the opportunity to go out and play 10 minutes, so for the coaches to believe in me, to have trust to give me that much playing time, it just means a lot to me.”
Aidan Hadaway had only five points but passed out six assists, while Elijah Elliott scored three points with seven assists.
The Bobcats shot 62.1% for the game, including 65.5% in the second half. They made 14 of 27 (51.9%) 3-pointers and were 16 of 25 at the foul line. The Harriers shot 40.4% but had 20 turnovers.
Trevor Norris led Miami-Hamilton with 20 points, with Cory Davis scoring 13 points and Shaeden Olden 11 points. The rest of the team combined for 15 points.
Ohio returns to Mid-American Conference play with a trip to Central Michigan at 3 p.m. Dec. 30.
