NIT has stopped guaranteeing spots for regular season conference champions.

I have no problem with removing the regular season auto bid. It's reason #974 that the regular season only matters to the P6 (mostly) for at-large considerations.

What really stinks is the new auto bids to the top two NET teams from only the p6 who didn't make the dance.

Good luck mids. Nobody cares about you unless they're picking you as their NCAA Cinderella. Be prepared for half the NIT being 500 or below big boys.

Wonder what this will equate to in lost TV revenue for mids like the MAC who generally get 1 or even 2 teams in the NIT.

This reads to me like the NIT is financial dire straits and they're trying whatever they can to keep it alive. Color me unsurprised if, in a few years, the final weekend is no longer in MSG as a last hail mary before they finally take it behind the barn.

I agree JSF.

I honestly don't know. Does the NIT provide per game payouts to the teams or conferences like the NCAA or not?

Maybe you kill two birds with one stone. Expand the NCAA and let the NIT go the way of the DoDo.

It's unfortunate that G5 conference champions may soon not have a home - but it always felt like it was just a matter of time, before the NCAA found a way to really finish off regular season champions meaning absolutely nothing. Because it doesn't. Matters even less in one-bid conferences like the MAC.

Money matters more than anything. I dont feel like the NIT is going anywhere though. Americans LOVE football, but the NIT feels a lot like 6-6 vs 7-5 bowl games. People are gonna watch it, bc they love sports.

16-16 Florida is a bigger draw than Alcorn State every day of the week.

17-15 Michigan is getting more eyes than Morehead State.

17-16 Villanova... more people want to see them over Toledo.

From Mid-Major Madness twitter:

A coach from the MAC says:

“Regular season means nothing now. Your season starts and ends in the conference tourney. For us, whoever gets to Cleveland, you have 3 days to figure it out.“

Honestly I’d rather watch a tournament of all good mid-major teams than the NIT, not that I could even tell you the last time I watching the NIT.

This stinks to high heaven, but the regular season auto bid was not a longstanding policy and it's not like we can point at Toledo and say how well they represented our conference.

Steinbrecher has released a statement that he will push conference presidents to endorse an expanded NCAA field. It's coming.

Now is the time we invest to move to the ACC, or SEC. Build a new arena, and football stadium and go get that money!

Good comparison. I think the bigger brand names draw in casual viewerships. However, what would still be considered a success for us (regular season conf. Champ/NIT), is likely deemed a failure by fans of P6 schools. Would they care as much about an NIT appearance after a barely .500 season?

I don't see how NCAA Tournament expansion helps the MAC unless it's guaranteed the regular season champion gets an automatic NCAA Tourney bid and I don't see this happening.

Are we even sure it is smart financially to include crappy P6 teams over solid mid-majors? Taking our state as an example, I am not entirely sure a 10th place in B10 Ohio State gets more ratings and sells more tickets than a regular season champ Ohio team. It just seems like power conference fan bases are disgusted and done with their team if they don't make the big tourney.

I'd be shocked if this isn't the exact analysis the NIT ran to make this decision.

The only thing that matters is TV ratings, and the NIT wouldn't make this choice if the 10th ACC team didn't draw more eyeballs than Toledo.

The NIT has been even more exclusive from mid-majors than the NCAA Tournament for quite some time.

I don't know what recourse there is. If more people watch the NIT because more teams with bigger fanbases are included, the NCAA will chalk it up to the market deciding.

I'd hate to see the conference tournaments go away, but this decision points the sport in that direction. They're a huge fabric of what makes college basketball so great. Look for conferences to handsomely reward the top 1-2 seeds in their bracket formats soon.

Right. If 10th place Georgia Tech goes to the NIT, they might get 3500 people in the door for a home game, but how many more are watching on TV than if that spot went to Toledo?

I have no problem rewarding the top 2 finishers in the MAC regular season with byes to the semifinals.

I didn't like it before when the MAC sent the #1 and #2 seeds to the semis. It just didn't seem like a legit tournament. And that's why they quit doing it.

Another option would be: all teams get in the NCAA and the conference tournaments are eliminated.

Honestly, I don't know what the best format is now.

NIT seems like a tournament that has been reeling for a while and has pretty much been the NCAA's hamster on life support. Smells like a Hail Mary type move to save it but I ultimately think it won't live to the end of the decade, and good riddance. (Being dubbed the Not Important Tournament and Not Invited Tournament doesn't help either)

It's about time we get a reputable mid major tournament at the end of the year, even if we don't make the big dance at least we could have the opportunity to be in a competitive tourney with other mid majors with higher seeded teams getting home court advantage.

Early rounds, I doubt many teams are pulling in big crowds. Get to NYC? Yeah, there's gonna be a difference between us and an Ohio State.

With the current mindset, with apologies to the late Coach Hunter, isn't this one-and-done year a type of indentured servitude? How can it be allowed to stand?

You can't restrict a students ability to leave college. The professional sports can though restrict entry.

Isn't that age discriminations on the part of NBA? I suspect a law suit against the NBA on this matter would have a favorable outcome if such a case were to reach SCOTUS.

This is may not be exactly true. In the NCAA tournament nearly everyone roots for the underdog all time, except the fans of the favorite or those who have big bets on the favorite. Any reason that this would not hold true in the NIT -- G5 vs. P6? You'd think that most casual fans who tuned in would be rooting for the G5 school in such a match up.
