I've realized, watching the NBA playoffs this year, it's a little nuts how many Kentucky players are/were in the post season this year (and most playing large roles on their teams). Karl Anthony Towns, Jamal Murray, Jared Vanderbilt, AD, Bam, Tyler Herro, Julius Randle, Devin Booker, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, De'Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, John Wall...and I'm probably missing a few. And those are just playoff guys from Kentucky, not counting guys like Shaedon Sharpe, Kevin Knox, Ty-Ty Washington, Nerlens Noel, etc...

So here's my questions: how in the HECK has he only won one championship at Kentucky? And should Coach Calipari be considered an underachiever in his run at Kentucky?

How many of UKs guys played more than one year there?

They are the kings of recruiting 1 and dones to feed the NBA for sure. Doesn't mean that's a solid strategy for any type of sustained success at the college level.

Superior raw talent only gets you so far. Top 25. Top few spots in the SEC. In the NCAA tourney. Sure. But when you get to the pointy end of the spear it takes more than that including some luck (injuries and matchups).

Exactly, they are the KINGS of 1 and DONE, they are 18 playing together for the first time against older youngmen. It makes a difference, a difference that sometimes talent cannot overcome.

Yep, don't think it's a coincidence that VCU, George Mason, Butler, Loyola Chicago, Wichita State, etc. all improved their standings substantially during the 1 and done era.

And then came the transfer portal...

Yeah, I'm also not super convinced the transfer portal is a sky-is-falling thing for mid-majors, either.

The early data certainly doesn't suggest as much, and it's not like this past NCAA tournament was just blue bloods dominating.

It's a thing of beauty watching Jamal Murray shoot the basketball. Even his misses look good. Then, last night in the 4th, he practically couldn't miss. Unreal clutch performance by Murray late last night.

Just curious. Is there a source you have available that shows the one and done's for those colleges you mentioned? Quick search is leaving me with no good resource or result.

Just sitting here I can't think of who the one and dones for those schools would be. Probably my old mind....

I don't think there are any (or at least, not many -- Gonzaga may have had one or two).

The point I was trying to make is that mid-msjor programs benefited from continuity while blue blood programs leaned in heavily to one and dones.

Ahhhh. That makes more sense. The current Mantra amongst college coaches in the NIL and Transfer Era is ... "Get old and stay Old"...I have heard several coaches ....Drew, Izzo and contemporaries repeating the thought.

So in essence - recruit the 1 and done's for "talent" and augment with age/experience/proven track records via the portal.

Seems like a logical conclusion to marry talent and experience in an era of AAU free agency.

I'm not even sure the right playbook is to recruit the 1 and done's for talent. If you look at the last few NCAA champs -- Uconn, Kansas, Baylor, Virginia -- there isn't much NBA talent. Villanova in 2018 had two NBA talent leaders, but they were both Juniors. You have to go back to 2015 for an NCAA champion whose best players were 1 and Dones.

I think the playbook is to try and recruit the best basketball players possible that don't have NBA upside.
