Mychal Green was really good for two years. Patrick Flomo was always solid. Gavin Block battled every minute. Always liked George Reid (RIP) on and off the court.

I liked Mike Hammond. Not the caliber of Jerry Jackson but gave Ohio 2 solid years at that guard spot.

Mick "Michelob" Isgrigg. Not a star on the basketball court but definitely a standout on Court St.

Jon Smith. Was able to talk to him about a month ago. Got to listen to some good stories, memories and how Jim Christian ruined the Sweet 16 team.

Not sure the exact definition of "non-star," but some of these were starters, but not really the star of the team IMHO:

Fred Cluff
Stacy Button
Lloyd Buck
Treg Setty
John Rhodes
Mick Isgrigg
Larry Coon

Gus Johnson and Jeff Boals from those 90s teams.
Edit to add Chad Estis (from walk-on to NCAA tourney starter) and the immortal Rush Floyd (who was a better drunk 3pt shooter?)
Always thought Corey Reed would have been a tremendous PG if it weren't for his knee issues (reduced his quickness and he couldn't shoot).
Loved Big Ed Sears.
Does Jon Sanderson count as a "star"?
Walt Offutt was the heart and soul of the sweet 16 team and Jon Smith was an unsung hero giving us length and defense for rebounding and shot blocking against bigger/P5 teams.
Treg Setty for his enduring love for OU.

Other than that, Leon Williams, Big Tilly and BVP were 3 of my favorites but they probably qualify as "stars" so not for this list.

Easy one for me - Curtis Simmons. Not the caliber of player that Gary Trent was, but he had a few Trent-type moments and was a really good player his last two years. I really liked his game.

Oh and how about that kid with the nice motor, high energy and medium range jumper who was a transfer with one year and I think a Mormon. I can't remember his name or exactly what year he played, but he was a favorite of mine in the "non-star" category. Any remember his name?

All perspective I guess, but I definitely consider Simmons a "star". He started as a freshman and sophomore before becoming a super 6th man as an upperclassmen.

He routinely beat Trent in practice 1 on 1 and IMO would have been a retired jersey type player had he actually cared enough to do things like, you know, show up to practice. Not sure if he graduated either.

Legit 6'6 with a 7 foot wingspan. Athletic, really good defender, could drive (great finisher around the rim - with his patented reverse layups), could handle/dish as a point forward. He was a silky jump shooter from 15 on the baseline. If he actually applied himself at all and developed a slightly better shot from 3, he had pro potential.

Still ended his career with 1,353 points / 711 rebounds / 239 assists / 142 steals / 87 blocks. Shot 55.4% from the field and 36.1% from 3.

And again, all that was while playing 2nd/3rd fiddle to Trent and Geno his whole career.

There is no Ohio hoops player who loved The Pub more than Rush Floyd. He got the most out of his college experience that is for sure. Went from MAC Freshman of the Year to barely seeing the court the rest of his career. Can't really blame him if he loved Court Street more than the Convo floor.

Well, I'll be more judgmental. A young man who gets drunk frequently and squanders his basketball talent (or any other talent) because he's getting wasted all the time can be cited as an example of a person with, at the very least, bad judgement. Court Street can be a great experience and an important part of growing up, but it also has been the cause of the downfall of many a young person. Moderation in all things!

Kenneth van Kempen

More recently, I wish we could recruit a kid like Tommy Schmock every single year as a grad transfer. Perfect 6th man

I've seen crazier things happen.

It was always easy to root for Delvar Barrett, and always thought that having long, athletic, switchable defenders like DeVaughn Washington, Ivo Baltic, and Jon Smith were a huge part of why Groce's teams had such high ceilings when things clicked.

Rick Scarberry (the genuine ambassador to Court Street), Stevie Taylor, Bill Brown, and by contractual obligation, Drew Crabtree.

This is a question for old farts and those who have memorized old OHIO rosters. Does anyone remember the bench player circa 1966 who the student section would always cheer for at end of games and want Coach Snyder to put in the game? Once he got in, the fans would cheer his every move, and when he made a basket it would bring the house down. He only got in when we had an insurmountable lead or were hopelessly behind. The latter didn't occur often in home games in the era. My wife remembers this guy, also, but neither of us can remember his name. All we remember is that when OHIO had big lead the chant for this player would start and not let up until he was put into the game.
