Hey BA'ers,

Us polyglots talked to assistant Lamar Thronton about our new players and what they'll offer (freshmen included). It's been a common question brought up at all the caravans, so those who haven't been able to attend can hear about them at the link(s) below.

If you've been listening, we appreciate it.

I listened to it when it came out. Lamar did not hold back. Said Jaylin is a true point guard and leader. Didn't mince words when he implied that he will fill the role left by Jay Preston and Mark Sears. Didn't sound like we'd skip a beat.
DeVon Baker is a basket getter! Scorer supreme. Lamar mentioned that in tight games, he would be relied upon to score.
G-Wiz is a mammoth of a man who also likes to one hop Euro fade. Mentioned they are looking at how to use him
EJ4 is physically ready and a winner with a high basketball IQ
Ajay Sheldon is just tough and his size is not a factor. He has been to open gyms and has proven he belongs
Aidan Hadaway is a scorer with toughness
AJ Brown is a winner who is ready to play
Mentioned also that Miles and Dwight are leaders and to "watch out for AJ Clayton this year."
Did not mention B-Rod at all. Even when prompted by Scholze as one of the leaders.

Bobcat1998 nailed it with his analysis.

Highly recommended Podcast. Jake and Mike did a great job of just letting Coach Thornton go all out talking about each newcomer. Very insightful and it will get you fired up for summer workouts/practice to start soon. The comment about Clayton really stood out, along with recruiting Hadaway against the likes of Georgia, Ole Miss and even Auburn sniffing around. Elmore James is a MAN. Whiz is every bit of 7-Foot. Sheldon is going to find his way onto the floor. Brown's brother is very much on Ohio's radar and I'm sure we are putting the full-court press on him to get him to Athens.

If and when Boals leaves, we need to do everything we can in my opinion to elevate Lamar to the post. His personality is terrific. He knows his stuff and he is a hell of a recruiter along with the other assistants.

If we make the NCAA Tourney this year (if....) then Jeff will be gone, mark it. He will not be any hotter and will have deserved it. Lamar is ready for the head coaching job and I hate to think we could lose him to a job even if Boals stays. Although if I were Boals, I'd keep Chet Mason on speed dial and recruit him to coach at OU. Dude is a great AAU coach and has Brush relevant in all of Ohio.

Great call on Chet Mason. Agree. Surprised Miami (OH) hasn't tried that as well.

Coach Thornton's words, not mine.

DeVon Baker - "a walking bucket"

Jaylin Hunter - "cookie cutter template for a coach's son; disciplined; type of guy who clocks in every day"

Elmore James - "Combo guard; grown man right now, a tank"

Ajay Sheldon - "Very skilled, can finish around the rim; can shoot the leather off the basketball"

Aidan Hadaway - "Versatile forward; athleticism" Also talked about watching him with SEC scouts in the crowd and how much work Coach Martin put in to get him.

AJ Brown - "Shot maker; brings good juice right away; high academic kid" Also mentioned recruiting his brother.

I think your comments regarding B-Rod need to be taken with a grain of salt and are a little out of context.

The hosts asked Coach Thornton who to look for when adversity strikes, and Coach gave his personal opinion list of Miles, Dwight and some the new older guys expected to contribute. B-Rod's name wasn't brought up either way by anyone speaking.

Nice work as always, Jake.

Big Thorton fan, hope the next time Boals goes flirting, Julie lets him know he's the next man up.

Trust me, no one wants B-Rod to bounce back more this year than me. No matter how bad it got last year I still believed every shot he took was going in. He was a key signee when Boals first got the job and has been a consummate teammate and Bobcat. It just seemed like when Lamar says "Miles and Dwight" as leaders it makes me go "hmmm." In the end, I really hope he does better but if he doesn't, I could see a rotation of Baker, Hunter, AJ Brown, Wiznitzer and DW3 as starters with EJ4, Ezuma, Clayton and Miles as next 4 with Hadaway or Adelodun as the wildcard. B-Rod could be odd man out. But I truly hope he's the starter of AJ Brown to allow Brown time to acclimate.

+1

BRod was given a long leash last year and spent the whole season mired in the worst shooting slump in Bobcat history. He deserves a shot to snap out of it, but the leash better not be as long this upcoming season with the talent brought in. As I said earlier, Brod should not be penciled in as a starter. He needs to earn it in practice in October/November.

Whether it's basketball or football we all get excited about the expectations of the new players.
Most of these do not pan out, why, because if these players were that good they would be graded higher and end up at P5 schools.

Yep, inevitably, like JP, DJ and Gary Trent. OHIO can never attract good talent. Might as well drop the basketball program down to DIII. We could certainly beat Marietta and Rio Grande for the SEO Championship. Let’s all have reasonable expectations, guys and gals.

It's all about finding those diamonds, coach.

Steph Curry went to Davidson. Dame Lillard went to Weber State. CJ McCollum at Lehigh. JA Morant was a 0 star player in HS.

Richaun Holmes is playing well for Sacramento, went to BG.

Caris Levert about came here before the coaching change.

Everbody knows JP's story.

Like I said in a previous post, talent can come from anywhere, sometimes all it needs is a chance.
