Great read! I wish him the best in the NBA. I started rewatching NBA games because of him! It was great to talk with him before the Central Mich game this year, and be apart of starting the "Ja-son Preston!" chant at that game.

It's irritating as an alumnus but it's just depressing as an indictment of profiteering and the gutting of newsrooms across the country. How effing hard is it to spend a 30 seconds fact-checking something? It's just a symbol of how once-great things all across this nation are slowly succumbing to the rot of greed and short-term thinking.

Unfortunately the overwhelming majority of state universities formally go by "university of...." California, Arizona, Texas, Michigan, North Carolina South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, etc.

It is lazy, but if you grew up in one of those states, it is logical. I would feel more your pain if the article had been written in Ohio.

I'm also not dismissing that the writer may have referenced University of Ohio in front of Preston "so you end up at the University of Ohio..." who didn't bother to correct him, but properly referenced the university when he spoke, "When I was at Ohio, Saul...." -- in which case the writer will just roll.

You're reinforcing my point. Yes, it's totally understandable that the reporter would make the mistake. That it either was missed by copy editors and fact checkers (to the extent that they still exist after all the cutbacks at the LA Times) says a lot about the state of journalism in this country. This is supposedly a "newspaper of record" and they can't staff up enough to get the basics right. It's a trivial error in a minor story but it symbolizes a lot more.

unless, as I said, Preston didn't correct him. Folks think the reporter would be stopped in mid sentence, "It's Ohio, just Ohio, not University of Ohio, and not Ohio University, just Ohio. make sure you get that right"

At least they didn't write "Ohio State". It's a small flaw in an otherwise excellent article.

I learned a new term the other day, "toxic positivity."

Includes but not limited to dismissing how somebody genuinely feels about a situation/event in order to "stay positive" or comparing said situation/event to a worse situation in order to feel better, aka good vibes only, somebody else has it worse than you.

Pretty sure if this article were about a buckeye, this journo would have gotten it right.

I identify as a toxic positivist.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Screen name checks out! Beware, toxic positivity can lead to negative effects on mental and physical health.

I believe there are only 3 state universities that have the state name before university, and they happen to be contiguous geographically: Indiana University, West Virginia University, and Ohio University.

Well, at Marshall we called WVU, the University of Southern Pennsylvania!

On a more serious note, I wonder how many times Indiana University gets referred to as the University of Indiana, and how Hoosier fan boards react in such situations.

Continuing Recovering Journalist's rant, which I couldn't agree more, I'm appalled by what I see in the Columbus Dispatch on a nearly daily basis. And yes, I'm a dinosaur still getting the paper delivered each day, perhaps the last one in all of Licking County.

Just a few examples (not even including the grammar/spelling/factual errors) in the past month or so:

1. While reading page 3 in the front section on March 23 I started experiencing deja vu. Thinking I already read the four articles plus the summary of other stories, I pulled out page 3 in the front section on March 22. True enough, the two pages had the same stories and headlines in the same layout on consecutive days.

2. A headline running across the top of page 3, front section, on April 10: "More civilians flee east Ukraine after deadly strain tation strike". Strain tation?

3. April 14 edition included the Dispatch's first page of its front section. The second page in the same front section? A page from the sports section of the Detroit Free Press.

I'm a graduate of Ohio University's school of journalism although I switched to a career in education 30 years ago. I still enjoy the work the Columbus Dispatch does, being a watchdog of local government, big corporations, politicians, etc. . . I understand the dynamics that have eroded print media over the past few decades. But, like Recovering Journalist, I find it unsettling to see the lack of professionalism coming from newsrooms.

That's what happens when giant conglomerates buy up every media outlet from here to there then try to consolidate the operations in the name of "efficiency" and "cost effectiveness." When Clear Channel bought up a bunch of Columbus radio stations, the "local" programming aired from Cleveland and even Pittsburgh. Made me say "I hate iHeartRadio."

Anyway, back to the Preston article, his vision on the court is one thing we sorely missed this past season. Sears was good at the mechanics of running the point but Preston's ability to see things before they happen is something you just can't teach.

I was surprised that the reporter reached out to Saul and not Jeff. It was Jeff that recognized JP's talent and developed him to become an elite athlete.

Glad to see Saul get this ink. He was underrated as a recruiter. If Tony doesn’t go down with that injury, Saul is probably still here at OHIO. All that being said, I think Jeff will be an all-time great Bobcat coach.

We agree on one thing. The ignore-specific-poster button would be a welcome feature!
