I know he didn’t set the world on fire last season, but going from being in the rotation to barely playing in his sophomore year can’t be easy. Was there an injury I missed? Is there much optimism he’ll stay and be a meaningful contributor?

Good question. We certainly could have used some bench production this year.

Injured. Trying to redshirt. Just not good enough. Boals refusing to play bench guys. All of the above. Not sure.

I will go with a swing and a miss by the coaching staff. If he couldn’t play with DW3 out for the season, then when?

With the way the lineups were used coming down the stretch, it has to be just bc they didn't wanna waste his redshirt right? The front line is gonna need some experience next year for sure especially if BVP doesn't come back. He was a serviceable backup last season. No reason to think he can't be that going forward.

Hope you are right, I'm just not as optimistic. The door was open to get some valuable minutes this year with DW3 out and he got zero. Coaches obviously get to evaluate him in practice every day. Something isn't adding up.

Something didn’t add up with Roderick or McDay either, all different reasons I guess but there were quite a bit of strange things going on this year.

It's honestly crazy to think about how this season unfolded following a 2nd round NCAA tourney trip with a team that had ZERO seniors last year.

Our rotation last year:

Preston - NBA
McDay - Quits
Roderick - 12.4ppg to 6.8ppg
BVP - Check
DW3 - Torn ACL
Sears - Check
Brown - Check (forced to start)
Granger - Played 3 games
Miguel - Transfer
McMurray - Transfer
Towns - Still a bench enigma
White - Transfer

And we added:
Carter - Good
Schmock - Last minute for Preston
Clayton - Forced into minutes
Ezuma - Forced into minutes
Adelodun - Not in rotation

Definitely took a big step back, Granger included.

Agreed.

I've said it a couple of times over the last few months, but the area that remains an open question for Boals is his recruiting "hit rate."

There was definitely some bad luck this year (McDay, DW3) but Boals' recruiting classes seem to be feast or famine thus far. Some great additions (like Sears) but also a surprising number of guys who couldn't crack the rotation in a meaningful way resulting in a short rotation heavily reliant on grad transfers.

If next year's class needs a couple of years to develop, I think we're looking at a step back for sure. Perhaps a substantial one.

He has played in three games, 12 minutes total, according to stats, and two were later in the season, so I don't think he is eligible to redshirt in anyway. His three appearances were the same three blowout appearances as John Tenerowicz, so I think he just is that far down on the bench at this point.

In today's game couldn't this be true for just about every coach? The past four coaches of this program have all had their fare share of hits and misses. The severity of each has varied for sure, but it's not like this is a new problem.

With the thousands that are in the portal every year. I'd say it's true of most every coach.

If Granger is interested in immediate playing time, he might to look at UNA. They had a big year last season but not this season as both starting power forwards from the good season transferred. They did just get the starting point guard from Lipscomb (KJ Johnson) from the portal.

Isn't three games under the total for a redshirt or does it have to do with the fact they were late in the season?

I agreed that he was serviceable last season so I figured a redshirt this year was just part of the plan for his development.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I may be wrong, but I don't think basketball, like football, has a rule that allows freshmen to play a few games and not burn their redshirt. I'm sure one of our resident experts can tell me if that's right.

You are on a roll today OCF!!!!! Like a broken clock, you've been right twice in one day!!!

No, in all seriousness, basketball has the rule that one play = one game, and one game burns the shirt!

The A-10 is currently proposing that basketball adopt the football rule of 4 games, with the stipulation that they be essentially "emergency players".

Well, when I wrote "resident experts," I was thinking of you, BTC, as the expert most likely to know the answer!

And this goes along with my original comment. If he couldn't be serviceable this season with DW3 out, then the coaches must feel like there was a drop-off from his freshman year.

So I'm assuming this does NOT apply to medical redshirts in bball because guys have definitely played games and still gotten it. I believe Antonio Campbell even applied for this but was ultimately denied.

So the question is, does Granger have an undisclosed injury that could allow applying for this redshirt?

If not, then ouch.

Last season for Granger....

22 games - 6 min. per gm

42% shooting / .500 FT / 1.3 ppg

He seems like a nice kid. Is it possible he's as good as he's going to get?

This is along the lines I was thinking, in which case I think the medical hardship is 30% of the team's games. But I doubt we get there with Colin unless he's been battling something since the start of the year we don't know about or forgot.

The hardship requires you do not participate at all after the midpoint in the season, so even if he had an injury at some point, he would not be eligible for this.

Maybe Colin's developmental plan is to integrate him into the rotation next season.

Based upon my understanding a lot of kid(s) really don't play until their junior season.

Getting minutes in the NCAA tournament last season to virtually no playing time?
That is a question I can't answer.

Has anybody asked Coach Boals during his weekly show (why)?

As far as next year we have two kids that were heavily recruited by those big fancy schools in conferences that get more than one team in the NCAA tournament.

One is a top 150 recruit to boot. I would hope we have at least one true freshman starter next season.

My guesses would be that Granger is gone, but BVP stays. No inside knowledge like BTC probably has, just my hunches.

We had a 6 man rotation by season's end. That's far from an issue that every coach in "today's game" has. I don't think I've ever followed a team who's lack of depth was more apparent. What we saw this year was a different degree than I remember any of the previous coaches dealing with.
