Although tonight's loss stings, I'm so happy and grateful I got to experience a special season of OU basketball as a student. I'm very glad I summoned courage to lead the student section, previously being afraid to even start a chant. I'm excited for what's in store for next year, and the support here has been awesome. I hope Carter is alright, and if this is BVP's last year, What a legend. I'm so lucky to watch him play in person.

Aside from some magical years for the ages (i.e. 94 and 95 Trent years, 2010/2012/2020 NCAA runs etc) - season records and games are forgotten.

It's the friendships, comradery and memories that will last a lifetime (and keep you coming back well past your college years like the rest of us). Glad you were able to participate and create some lifelong memories.

Thanks Graff! I've made plenty so far and plan to make more in the future! I will always be coming back here for many years after I graduate.

Overall a solid year. 25 wins, 3rd place finish in MAC, reached semis in MAC tournament and postseason trip win one postseason win. Replacing Preston was a concern and then the injury to DWIII and MCday leaving probably was the difference for this team not reaching the NCAA or winning the MAC regular season. This team benefited from a soft non-conference schedule and down MAC overall, but stayed focused enough to avoid too many bad losses. Lots on question marks heading into next season. BVP and Carter are huge shoes to fill. Hope Brown and Roderick become more involved in scoring. Health of DWIII is a question mark. does he return and how effective will he be coming off injury. Is he the same player. We may take a step back next year with youth on the frontline and until the freshmen develop. Boals has had three strong years. He has increased win totals each year. Ohio should enjoy strong fan support coming off these three years.

Cellis…you reviving the OZone was one of the highlights of the year. Great job and keep it going.

I know people will point to the 25 wins as a great accomplishment this year, but in the end, who did we really beat? The epic stumble to the finish line is impossible to erase from the memory bank. There truly is nothing remarkable that stands out from the win total.

We basically lose three starters heading into next season: Carter, BVP and BRod. Yes, can’t count on BRod to start another game moving forward in his career. When he was on the floor it was 4 against 5. Absolutely painful to watch. Either Elmore James or AJ Brown must start next season. If those two don’t contribute, there will be even more serious questions about Boals recruiting moving forward.

Happy for you man. There's no other experience like being the fan of a really good mid-major team in contention for championships. I won't ever forget my time as a student and getting to experience the run we had in 2005. The home wins that year over Buffalo and WMU were two of my favorite games as an OZone member.

I have to agree with this. As I said in another thread, this was in some ways my most disappointing season as a Bobcat basketball fan. We have had years when we truly stunk, and we had low expectations which we met. We've had seasons of mediocrity, when we started that way and ended that way. We've had some truly great seasons and seasons that looked not so good but then we peaked at just the right time. I can never remember another season where we looked like a sure-fire MAC regular season champion and then ended up getting creamed by the really, truly good MAC championship calibre teams.

In hindsight, we appear to have been a real imposter. I think what actually happened was that we were rather one dimensional and when other coaches had tape on us they could neutralize our offense by effective guarding and double teaming of Sears and BVP and not paying a whole lot of attention to a few of our other players. I'm hopeful that some of our incoming recruits and maybe a good transfer or two (replacing a few outgoing transfers) will make next year better.

I truly believe, though, that if we still had JP, with his ability to distribute and make even the weakest teammate look better, that we might still be dancing at this point.

Let me add that I'm not down on Jeff Boals. I think he's an excellent coach. He just doesn't yet have the recruits he needs to lead us to the promised land. Have faith. Ohio will get there under Boals. Go OHIO!

I won’t speak for everyone on here, but the season reminded me an awful lot of the 2012 football experience.

Yep, except we didn't redeem ourselves in a bowl game! ;-)

No doubt about it Ohio Cat Fan, had Jason still been with us, I think we could have made some serious noise in the Big Dance. Mark was thrust into a point guard role that was not his forte. It took a while (thankfully) but once coaches were on to the fact, he got double team which caused him to pick up his dribble etc. For all of his frenetic pace and play, Jason had a calming effect on the team. It seemed we didn't have a true floor general out there this year, which will happen. Everyone's personality is different. Honestly, I felt before Jason left we could compete with the 2012 team for a deep tournament run. Alas, it was not meant to be, it is hard for all the stars to align for Mid Major teams. There's always next year.

It's hard for me to nitpick on Sears who was First Team All-MAC and averaged 19, 6 and 4 but it's the 4 that sticks out. Four assist per game with a 1.2-1 assist to turnover margin is FAR from what a point guard should be doing in this offense. What we truly missed was Jason's drive and kick ability. Mark got caught in the trees too often. Add in that we had only one reliable outside shooter in Tommy late in the year and it is disastrous. I love Miles and BRod as omplimentary players but neither is going to create their own shots. That's why I would love to see a bigger point guard brought in to allow Mark to slide into the wing a bit. And with AJB and EJ3 I think we have two guys who can create their own shots.

My final dig on the year is the strange lack of playing time for Adelodun, Ezuma and Clayton. I know AJ got some time but even in blowouts these dudes sat the bench. How are they not getting time? Adelodun showed spurts. Ezuma showed spurts. I don't know if it was a loyalty to Carter and BVP or what but dang, I think Adelodun could have done what BRod did this year except he's 6-6 and long.

Good post. Another thing Jason did so well was orchestrate the pick and roll to perfection. Whether it was with Doug his freshman year, Sylvester, or Dwight, it worked so well and so often it was poetic. We ran a little pick and pop stuff with Vander Plas, but I'm having trouble remembering a single successful instance of pick and roll to the basket all season.

I'm not so disappointed in the lack of or waning playing time for the three freshmen. Rarely did BVP and Carter get into foul trouble nor did they appear overly fatigued for the most part, so if we're trying to win games and our best forwards are good to go, roll with them. Ezuma essentially replaced AJ as the season wore on, but I did not see the bouncy Devaughn Washington/Doug Taylor hybrid that I thought we were getting based on IJ's Hargrave tape. Adelodun had a steep learning curve after sitting out of competitive basketball entirely during the Covid year. I'm surprised we saw him at all. I think all three have all-conference potential in time.

From a personnel standpoint, I see two keys to winning this thing next year:

1) Chemistry between Sears and Wilson. Dwight is a very good MAC center, but he is not Leon Williams or Tony Campbell. He does his best work getting into position for a high percentage shot when he doesn't have the ball and being fed at just the right moment. Preston was a magician working with Dwight, and I don't think it will be that tall of a task for Mark. Some good stuff between the two in these clips - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKws2Io-LYw

2) A lot more consistent scoring needs to come from the group of Miles Brown, Roderick, Towns, Adelodun, Sheldon, AJ Brown, James, and throw in Lukas Frazier if he returns. It'd be cool if two or three of those guys emerge as double digit average scorers, but it can be by committee too. We averaged 74 points per game and the group of Brown, Roderick, Towns, Schmock, Adelodun, Mcday and Frazier accounted for only 22 points per game. Can that get above 30?

Great find with that clip, Shabamon.

But one question: who was that #3 in green showing he wasn't just a 3-point shooter but also a 3-point maker?

I really think we need to understand several factors that impacted our year.

1) We lost the best player to the NBA
2) We lost our center due to injury
3) We lost another starter, reason unknown
4) We did get a great transfer
5) Our other shooting guard could not maintain his 3pt game from the previous year

These are all the factors that the coaches needed to deal with come the start of the year. To register a 25-10 year was quite remarkable. We can all find faults all along the season, why we did this instead of that?

On to next year;
1) We need to see who enters the transfer portal
2) We need to see if we pick up any transfer portal players
3) Does DW & BVP both return
Once these questions are answered we can then make our own assessments of our talent poole and prognostications.

Lots of questions between now and next October. Regardless how things play out in the interim, I know BA posters will be excited in anticipation come October of Boals going with a 9-man, if not a 10-man, rotation.

How do I know this? Because every October for the past 20 years (or however long BA has been around) BA posters see OUr roster loaded with DI ballers.

I know people will point to the 25 wins as a great accomplishment this year, but in the end, who did we really beat? The epic stumble to the finish line is impossible to erase from the memory bank. There truly is nothing remarkable that stands out from the win total. . . .

Go OHIO!

Mark's tendency to attack as soon as he sees an opening is a little bit of an issue. The defense would sag a little then collapse on him as soon as he made his move to the cup. A little more patience in letting the p-n-r develop is hopefully a big offseason learning tool. I think you made a comparison to him needing to be a little more Jaaron Simmons which I wholeheartedly agree with. Jaaron was excellent in the p-n-r and was 2nd in the nation in assists at some point.

We played 3 players this year who would not have started had we the team we expected to have. This could have been a nightmare season but they managed to win 25 games. Given the givens, I call it a very successful year.

Without exaggeration, you showed how dramatically one person can change an atmosphere. For those of us around the program for years, it was special to see. I didn’t know if we’d ever get that kind of student energy again. It just makes everything more fun and the team and program are so much better for it when the Ozone is jumping. Normally 25 wins would mean a great season, but the really great thing that happened this year was in the bleachers and not on the court.

If fans should take into account the loss of Preston, McDay and Wilson, which we should, shouldn't we also take into account the extremely weak schedule OUr team played.

I’ve heard some idiotic things here, but this takes the cake. We had a great season. These guys gave it everything they had and won 25 games, yet you say cheering fans were the bright spot?

In 2 ways - yes

1. the constant return of actual fans to the stands after the impact of the pandemic. over the past 2 seasons

and

2. the return of a formal, organized student section.

Yes, I've heard some idiotic things here - how's that cake taste?
