Knowing that we will likely see some movement within the transfer portal, I'm curious who people think are our best transfers ever. Off the top of my head (and within last 20 or so years), I came up with:

--Sonny Troutman
--Walt Offutt
--Bubba Walther
--Jaaron Simmons
--Maurice Ndour
--Armon Bassett
--Dwight Wilson
--Kenny Kaminski
--Treg Setty
--Jason Carter, the oddest name on the list

We have done pretty well with the transfers we have brought in. Of the list, I would put Offutt at the top due to the postseason success we had with him, and then Bassett and Wilson for getting us to the tournament.

Lewis Geter
Shaun Stonerook
LaDrell Whitehead

All three were first team all mac at least once and Geter was MAC player of the year.

I don't consider JUCOs transfers. Coming to a four year school is their natural progression. That eliminates Ndour.

I wasn't around for Stonerook and Sanderson. In my time, I'd say Wilson and Offutt stand high above the rest. I'd probably include Bassett if he didn't knucklehead himself off the team.

Oh yeah, throw in Jaaron Simmons.

Talent wise, Maurice N'dour and I don't think its particularly close.

I'd go with Todd Lalich as the best back in the early/mid 70s. He transferred in from Florida.

Jon Smith is a great addition to the list. He didn't fill up the stat sheet, but his defensive contributions were a big piece to some very good Ohio teams. It's easy to forget he was a transfer since he played 3 seasons for us.

On the flip-side, it's easy to forget Bean Willis because we had disappointing seasons with him here, but he did average nearly 15 ppg as a Senior.

After Schmock's success this season, I guarantee Boals and his staff will be looking out for D-2 grad transfers every year. We could use another guy like him this upcoming season.

I've seen crazier things happen.

As far as most talented, that's gotta be Marin Bota.

Sonny was a four year player here. I thought right out of hs. (no hargrave, etc.)

Wow, I don't know why I had it in my head that Sonny Troutman went to Cleveland State. Did we have a transfer from there that I could be confusing him with?

Wasn't Sonny Troutman a top-100 recruit?

Just remembered Johnnie Jackson.

Sonny Johnson! Yes...exactly who I was thinking of. Wasn't he HS Player of the Year in Ohio or something? Looking at his stats, he played for us for two seasons, starting only once in 41 games. Yet despite coming off the bench almost exclusively, he still averaged 15.5 ppg for us. That has to be at or near the top for all time sixth men at OHIO.

Ed Sears? Monster senior year. Might have been Juco, so not sure if he officially qualifies in this thread.

A little story related to Troutman and how out of touch some casual fans can be when it comes to D1 college basketball unless, that is, it involves the Big Ten or other major conferences. (I do assume however our 2010, 2012 and 2021 NCAA wins might have helped some in this regard)

My younger son was at a high school camp at OU and one of the high school player’s father saw Sonny out on the floor and said “he’s pretty good”, and apparently noticing his decent size (about 6’5” as I remember) asked, “is he their center?” He’s a guard my son told him. My son said he really looked surprised. I realize 6’5” centers can occur sometimes, and, today maybe Troutman might be considered a wing, but to immediately make that assumption has stuck with me over the years.

Yes, Sonny was co plyer of the year (D.1) in 97-98. Played at Cleveland St for two years before transferring to Ohio.

Can't forget Tim Joyce, who transferred from Tennessee. He and Steve Skaggs made up a great forward duo in the mid '70s.

Sidenote: There was some big post season all star game that took place following Tim's senior year, with players determined, at least in part by fan vote. His family organized a successful campaign to get him on one of the rosters.

For me Johnnie Jackson edges out Marin Bota as the most hyped transfer who just never panned out. He must have been one heckuva practice player for how much guys were talking about him.

Another name, I know he never played a minute, but let's not forget the gif-maker from Kansas Anrio Adams.

Yes, we benefitted when he was booted from Saint Bonaventure. Good player but tore his achilles right before the game at Kent when we made that unreal comeback (down 9?) in the last minute.

Since 2000, I'll take Walt Offutt as the best transfer at Ohio. Armon was probably the best player, but Walt was, in my opinion, the leader on that Sweet 15 team.
