At this time exactly 10 years ago, Ohio was coming off a disappointing loss to Kent to fall to 10-5 in the MAC with 1 game to go. Less than 30 days later, John Groce was the head coach of Illinois.

LOL right?! Not sure what happened to change the fact that Boals is potentially a hot commodity?

I can't understand how no one else can see the handwriting on the wall: Boals will be the coach of the Cavaliers next season. It's close enough that he can still commute via personal helicopter from New Albany.

Nothing has changed except for those who still cling to the regular season having any bearing on the equation. It's all about March as you pointed out. Okay, to be fair your overall record needs to support the March success but beyond that not really (and 23 wins this year is plenty of support). If we make a run in Cleveland Boals will be a smoldering commodity. If we crash and burn in Cleveland he'll be back next year and bring his highly touted recruiting class to Athens.

I've stated on other topics that I would be ok with Boals going to OSUcks or a team like Cincinnati -- as long as he's in a stable situation. I believe we have an up-and-coming young coach in Lamar Thornton. My biggest fear would be Boals and Thornton leaving together and taking Elmore James and A.J. Brown with them. Or even worse, BVP for a 6th year. Or DW3 for his final year -- or MARK SEARS!!!

Don’t give up, don’t ever give up. Sears will get hot at the right time and propel us to a MAC tournament championship.

From my perspective if the Bobcats win the tournament and win the 1st game in the NCAA's Boals will be the headliner by all the talking heads for a coaching change.
Short of this accomplishment Jeff will be back next year.
Then if BVP & DW return we will all be excited about next season, super excited.

. . . and BA posters will have its annual debate in October whether Boals will go 9 deep, 10 deep or 11 deep in his rotation. Only to see the rotation shrink to 7 by February, 2023.

Depends how many players transfer, quit or get hurt in between there. But yes, likely true.

Agree with all that.

So, would we prefer to get hot and win in Cleveland this year. Go to NCAA back to back. Lose in 1st round (likely) and see Boals get hired away after year 3 - possibly taking some recruits with him or decommitting like happened with Groce.

Or would we rather fall in Cleveland. Head to CBI or call it a season but retain Boals. Get another year of BVP (maybe) along with return of DW3 and excellent recruiting class. Possibly make a sweet 16 type run where you lose Boals after year 4 but get the experience and exposure of that type tourney run and MAYBE since recruits are already here you retain some/all even after Boals leaves and MAYBE you've laid enough foundation in 4 years and 2 tourney runs to try and keep the recruiting momentum going with next coach?

To me, that's a lot of maybe's but I still like the sound of option 2 if I'm honest.

Worry wart post of the year.

I'll counter this with a prediction that if we win an NCAA game or two that Jeff doesn't go anywhere, despite what the ESPN and CBS talking heads would be speculating. Calm down folks!

Take tournament trips and wins whenever you can get them. In the second scenario you outline, there's no guarantee we're even the best team in the MAC, let alone a Sweet 16 team. Since 1990, we basically go to the tournament once every 6 years on average. I think any attempt to try and get cute about these things with an eye towards retaining a coach longer puts the cart before the horse.

Bottom line is that if we win a tournament game this year and Boals gets poached, that's still a pretty damn good outcome for the program. To be able to go out on the market and say that of our last 4 coaches, 3 have ended up at Illinois, Boston College, and [Enter Boals P5 school] makes clear the quality of the job here and should put us in a strong place to make a good hire who can maintain any momentum.

If Boals can pull off what Groce did that year, he’s probably gone too. We shall see

I played broomball with Ted in '86. He's a beast on the ice.
