I watched a ton of his press conferences and videos of him online and let me say,
I’m so sad I never got to see him come to the Convo. Love his joy for the game and I think even he enjoyed it when the opposing crowd would get into the game. He always seemed to love coming to Athens. I made sure to say “Charlie was better” last night because he truly was.

All of those things you said -- are true. He was unique for an opposing coach in the sense that he was highly respected. He may even have had fans from within the ranks of Ohio fans.

There's a certain member of this board that I have an image of, from 13-15 years ago that said "Charlie be my valentine". 😂

Haha, that’s great! I wish we could have done a “We miss Charlie” chant last night. I’ll definitely remember it the next time we play Fiami.

If Charlie coached last night, he would have shook Boals hand and said...."Well done....wish we had your student section and fans at Millett Hall. The guy really respected Ohio's basketball program.

I remember Charlie at least one time interplaying with the Ozone on the “Sit down, Shut up” chant. While the cheer was on-going, Charlie went to his seat and stooped, as of to sit down, but never coming into contact with his seat and then fully standing to carry on what he had been doing. As I recall he did this a couple of times and added a “Cheshire cat grin. By the time this interaction was finished the Ozone was cheering him. Classic Charlie.

It's 1997. I'm 11 years old at Miami basketball camp. We're in the practice gym in the Millett Hall basement. Rafiloe Lethunya's my team coach. I'm struggling with a dribbling drill. Charlie walks by, sees me struggling, says to Rafiloe "Aww nah, we gon' be here all night, aren't we?"

It's honestly worth searching around and finding old videos and and articles on him. He was a wonderful person who was awesome for the league. It's amazing that he took a pretty modest salary and never really complained at Miami -- and there was a lot to complain about.

It's sad and unfair that he had to steward Miami through an inexorable decline as the administration there neglected basketball and showered resources on hockey (among many other mistakes). In Coles' tenure, Miami went from the clear #1 hoops program in the MAC (both historically and in the standings) to a near afterthought by the end. And pretty much none of that backsliding was on Charlie.

He was also the coach for CMU with the likes of Thunder Dan and Johnson (lightning). Majerle playing for CMU baseball as well but rarely got off the pine.

Coles legend is legit. I couldn't hate the guy if I tried.

A few years before Charlie passed he had ,what we heart attack survivors like to call an episode, and was in the hospital. Someone posted it on this site and I suggested that we should send Charlie some cards with our favorite Charlie moment wishing him well. Thought he would get a couple of dozen. About a year later I’m in my school’s gym and one of the Miami’s assistants was checking out one of our players. I get to talking to him and let him know I was a bobcat. I asked how Charlie was doing and how I had sent him a card and was hoping others had done the same. The assistant told me he had received a ton of cards from bobcat fans. He said Charlie was very touched by the gesture . He also told Charlie absolutely loved coming to Athens and the give and take with the O-zone. I loved watching Charlie coach.

Nothing good ever came out of Fiami.

Which is why Charlie Coles never left.

He was a good one.

Him interacting with us up in the OZone section in Cleveland DURING THE SECOND HALF OF A CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT GAME in 2005 is the stuff of legends, only to be one-upped by Sonny Troutman shot-putting (at an angle only Somny Troutman shot the ball, like a two-iron off the fairway) a 3-pointer through the hoop three seconds later.

It was one of those moments where you’re jumping and screaming and then wondering, “Did that just happen? Did a coach just start pointing at a student section midway up Gund Arena to playfully mess with us during the important part of the game?”

He did. Because he understood what made college basketball different and great.

I'm going to take crap for this, but that's the sort of thing that, in my opinion, makes college hoops more enjoyable than the next level.

And let's be honest, I think OUr coach has some of that type of personality in him.

Troutman hit like three straight triples in that game. I'll paraphrase, but Charlie had a funny response to that in postgame. Something to the tune of "I wasn't mad about the first one, not even mad at the second one, but after the third one I thought maybe we should guard that fella."

Charlie Coles understood life and college basketball were too important to be taken too seriously.

Took a lot of guts to be who he was. Much respect.

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

An older colleague of mine played football at Miami and knew Charlie in his college days. I think he was a couple of years older. He said Charlie was a bit “ornery” in school. I was shocked by that. :)

I’m convinced if he didn’t coach basketball he would’ve been a stand up comedian or comedic actor. His ability to feign shock or incredulity was actor-like.

Ruben Rabasa should play Charlie in the “Charlie Coles Story.”
