Here’s a quick synopsis: Austin Carr set an NCAA record that stood until a few years ago for most points by one player in a tournament game. It was suppose to be a close game. We had been nationally ranked as high as 5th that season, after beating four Big Ten teams, including Ohio State in the regular season. Then we got creamed like this in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Today’s game had the same feel to me. Worst first half performance since that game, as best as I can remember. The only BLSS Certified Hypocrite on BA "It is better to be an optimist and be proven a fool than to be a pessimist and be proven right." At any rate, my point was tonight’s game had the same feel to me. A well-regarded Ohio team gets the stuffing beat out of them in a complete mismatch that no one, even Jeff McKinney, saw coming. However a saving grace for us about the game tonight was (at this stage of the season) it wasn’t nearly as important in the grand scheme of things. That 1969-1970 team was probably my favorite of all time with the Trent, Boals, Ford, et al team a close second. I was a little too young, or at least unaware, of the mid-60s teams. A junior high BB team trip to Grover for a game against Toledo (67 or 68) is when it all started for me and the play in that game of Gerald McKee is something I especially remember, Given the 1969-1970 out of conference success we had against several respectable teams we had high hopes and Austin Carr shattered them. Certainly was a hollow feeling after that one. It still hurts today to even think about it. I had visions of us repeating or even exceeding our 1963-64 team that went to the Elite 8. And, then it all came crumbling down so quickly in that horrendous slaughter of a defeat. That first half tonight somehow had that same feeling -- a real hyped Ohio squad that looked like a bunch of collective deer caught in the headlights. But, you are absolutely correct, there is one big difference. It's not the last game of the season, and we have a chance to right the ship. We didn't have that after the UND whipping. Your reference to Austin Carr sparks two fun memories. One was an Ohio versus Notre Dame game during the Don Hilt years. Carr put up big numbers but, if my memory isn't amiss, so did Hilt - more than 30. The other memory comes after Carr's NBA career had ended. He and I - at age 40ish - were playing in a softball league. I was curious to see how he would hit. Ohio was coming off of an Elite Eight season and in the midst of another MAC championship run so it was another good team that you remember. Ohio was never ranked that year though. They went to Notre Dame, who was also unranked, late in the year and lost by 8 in a very high scoring game. A friend just reminded me that Miami had bounced Notre Dame from the tournament the previous year and that that provided Austin with some motivation to not be bounced by a MAC team two years in a row. I conceded that that could have been a factor. However, it was also true that just about every Bobcat played arguably his worst game of the year in that contest, so it was a perfect storm of bad play on the part of the Ohio and Austin Carr on a mission. There’s nothing better than seeing a pro athlete play a sport recreationally and realizing that whatever sport they picked they would’ve gone pro.
