Hey guys, my name is Chase Ellis and I am a junior at Ohio University. I've been highly interested in be a part of / reviving the O-Zone since I discovered it just after the win against Belmont. I was looking for advice on potentially regaining its reputation among the MAC conference and making the Convo the hardest arena to play in for opposing teams.

That is great to hear. I was part of the original Ozone formed in 2001. Some of the greatest memories of my life. Been a season ticket holder since graduation and it has been tough to watch it's demise over the years.

For me, the biggest thing is quite simple. You need a strong and reliable core of leaders. Every successful student section has a front and center crew that drives everyone else. Hopefully you have a few like-minded friends willing to jump in, and hopefully you guys aren't shy and can be really loud.

Beyond that, others will have more practical advice for who to contact and how to operate. I wonder if in 2021, a GroupMe may be the way to go where you can add people and send out various communications to. Maybe this year just work on making the students loud and engaged and parlay that into a formal Ozone next season?

There are lots of old guys like me who will be rooting you on and hoping you succeed!

Hey, I've seen you over on Reddit!

BTW, everyone else, come over to reddit.com/r/collegebasketball. It's a lot of fun during season and we could use more representation over there. It's like me, Cellis, and OhioUPilot.

Chase, this is a topic that has been beaten to death for the last decade. Check the O Zone forum on this site and you can see similar threads from students long gone.

There are two main tips I can give you:

1) You and 5-10 other people need to commit to really leading it. That means standing all game long, not beginning in the second half when the PA tells you to, and then encouraging other people to join. There's nothing lamer than a student section that sits. Then...

2) Commit to chanting something, ANYTHING in fair game taste, at least every other offensive and defensive possession. Watch this video from the game, there's no noise coming from the student section during most of the possessions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EF0uz5M82Qw . It's great that the students reacted to all the cool stuff that happened against Belmont, but the best student sections are proactive and try to influence the game. It doesn't even have to be overly creative, just mirror the basic cheers the cheerleaders do and you'd have a better student section. There's also good reactive stuff you could do every game:

Traveling: "Where you going?"
Any other violation: "You can't do that!"
Other coach upset: "Sit down shut up"
Ohio goes on a big run: "Where's the men's team?"
Any dunk or three pointer, do that jumping up and down "OOOOOOOO" thing, I don't know what it's called.

A GroupMe would be an amazing idea and I'm currently constructing ideas on how to make it marketable to others my age. The basketball team is highly competitive now and I think it's the perfect time to pounce. I've also contacted the athletic department on the OZone's status as their social media accounts have been pretty much dark since the NCAA tourney appearance last year.

Thanks man! I'm currently seeking out friends to potentially do some chants for fun to start off then go from there. The chant ideas are really good and I'll definitely use them / write them down for the next game against Robert Morris. I love what the 110 does when we nail a free throw ("SHOOT!" and make a swishing motion). We have a great team again and I believe it's the perfect time to pounce.

I can remember when the O zone was big and powerful. Also, in the 1970's when I thought people standing and cheering in the end zones might fall over the railing.

Jeez that sounds like it was rocking then! I'm glad I chose OU - beautiful campus and reminds me of when I would go visit my grandparents in the Wheelersburg area with all of the foothills. I plan to keep this simple to start with a few friends of mine and grow it from there.

I'm sure the coaching staff and administration would be supportive of your efforts too. I'm glad to hear that some current students like yourself still care about sports and gameday atmosphere.

-Matching ozone T-shirts.

-Will need at least a few fanatics who can regularly attend and can pay attention to the game to lead a few chants that are basic to learn.

-Some type of mass group chat or other marketing to other fringe interested students to get them to show up with their friends and make it an event help grow itself from there. I don't know how interested the cell phone generation is into regularly attending campus sports anymore, but coming off an ncaa tourney with another contending team is a good time to try again.

Thanks, Cellis.

I think the "You came a long way, just to lose" chant would have been good toward the end of the Belmont game.

Haha alright, found an example online and it's pretty hilarious! I'll note it if we happen to play another team that had to travel a long way to get here, JUST TO LOSE!

Spot on suggestions so far. I helped lead the Ozone equivalent in the early 80s.

You need a solid core: passionate, vocal, even attacking. Not just as chants. but heckling. Keep it clean but border on brutal. If a player has a hard foul get on him - not "that's dirty" - but rather "you're a punk 22" - every time he's nearby on a dead ball "your a punk". Know some stats if a player has a poor 3pt % let him know it "stop shooting 33, even your teammates want to you stop shooting....2o% from three - my god stop shooting" "That's a wasted offensive trip 33, all because of your. This is all on you 33"

Players barely pay attention to chants. They hear when you call them out.

On Saturday Cleveland St. should be reminded of 40-0 at every turn. We score 4 in a row - "Get ready Vikings 36 more on their way." "34 more" they score - start it over "38 more coming now - 38 more in a row"

When opponents are at the foul line is golden time. Chant "miss it" "Brick" anything . The Greek absolutely heard the fans count to 10 last year during the playoffs.

keep it clean, but constant (as others will tell you, I can struggle with the first part lol). As I said we had a good core and superstar heckler. TV station from Parkersburg came and did a feature on him because we made it hard to play at the Convo.

Players got a kick out of it and Nee loved it and had our backs (because stuffy members of the administration ALWAYS want to temper things - as will some on this board). Nee used to come over and tell us to get louder, more disruptive. In fact, I'd suggest connecting with Boals - let him know the groups coming together and want to make the Convo the place no team wants to visit. But you won't embarrass him either.

Take a look at Duke - organized chants and their heckling is notorious: witty, smart, brutal.

With social media you can pretty easily find dirt on opposing players. Use it against them: arrests, grades if they caused it or are at the center of it - it's fair game.

John Starks of the Knicks played against the Hornets here - I had great seats for the game. He had gone to 4 colleges in 4 years. I let him know it. "Did you flunk out or get kicked out". "What about this one." "That was a dumb shot John - but then 4 colleges in 4 years - I guess that shot makes sense to you." By the end of the might he was just glaring at me. My wife was embarrassed. I had blast and he shot awful that night (not because of me, but he heard me). Felt like I was back a the Convo. You want the opposing players hating the student section at the Convo.

I'm sure some will say "Oh no, Brother Bluto, we can't do that" and in 2021 maybe it needs dialed back (a small fraction). But opposing teams need know they are coming to the Convo, not Disney.

Make it happen!!

Indeed - but without the Ks - Crazy Cats. Started as a project in Sports Ad and then stuck around for a few years. Used to have a keg in a classroom in the Convo after the game with the players and Nee - yea, that's not happening again.

On a side note I like something like Crazy Cats (think Cameron Crazies - damn we were first) rather than O-Zone. O-Zone is a section, Crazy Cats were fans/people. More interest in joining (and recruiting) a group of like fans, than a "section."

Took Nee a few games to get his first win. Few of us cut up basketballs and wore them over our heads until he got the win. Got people's attention. Like Cameron Crazies, dress crazy, act crazy.

Thanks, not sure why I added the "Ks." Maybe I was remembering this comic strip. Although it was popular before I was born, I do remember seeing it, perhaps in reprint form:

In the 70’s the band sat at one end under the hoop and used to serenade Miami as they were warming up with “Mickey Miami”. Sung to the tune of the Mouseketeers Mickey Mouse. Of course, not sure how many are old enough to know that song.

Crazy Cats would be a great idea for what I'm trying to go for. I've got almost 10 people interested so far and we have a group chat set up to communicate chants / distribute information etc. We are planning on keeping it simple with some basic chants like "I believe that we will win" and "SUCKS" after each opposing player is announced in the opposing team's starting lineup.

Spot on suggestions so far. I helped lead the Ozone equivalent in the early 80s. . .

My memory is a little dim on this, but was this group called the "Krazy Kats," or something close that?

Indeed - but without the Ks - Crazy Cats. Started as a project in Sports Ad and then stuck around for a few years. Used to have a keg in a classroom in the Convo after the game with the players and Nee - yea, that's not happening again.

On a side note I like something like Crazy Cats (think Cameron Crazies - damn we were first) rather than O-Zone. O-Zone is a section, Crazy Cats were fans/people. More interest in joining (and recruiting) a group of like fans, than a "section."

Cellis033 if you come up with a design and order I'll cover the cost of the shirts. You can PM me and we can connect.

Something that I think would add some spice to the winning team-losing team cheer would be for the ozone/band, on the last couple of times in the exchange, to change up to include an ornery finale such as “Good team, Bad team”; “Good Coach, Bad Coach”; “Walkers, Talkers”, etc. I’m sure there would be many creative things that could be created. Would add some additional interest for the crowd to see what you would do. Just a few thought.

Work with marketing and try to get something in the students' hands. A towel, a sign, an oversized head..That will hopefully keep the phones out of their hands and they'll pay attention to the game!
