I feel bad for the CSU team. Playing against Krzyzewski in Cameron would be a hell of a memory.

And Duke is looking for a fill in. Can we do that one?

Unfortunately, covid is starting to cook again. Washington had to reschedule a game vs Arizona and forfeit one to UCLA. Tulane's men's and women's programs have shut down temporarily. And Mick Cronin has gone into covid protocol.

With the way things are going, the NCAA,NBA,NFL etc. may need to revise their
Covid protocols.

There was a virologist talking about this on the radio this morning.

He was saying that, so far anyway, while much more contagious, Omicron is a much "milder" mutation then Delta.

He said if you do get catch Omicron, and develop symptoms, they tend to be similar to a cold.

He said that explains Dr. Fauci saying that a separate Omicron specific booster isn't needed at this time.

He's more worried about some of the flu strains he's seen.

He said the protocols, including quarantines, do not take into account "milder" strains of Coivd.

He also said they don't take into account the available "therapeutics".

He also thinks the new Pfizer drug will be a total "Game Changer".

Then again, I'm sure tomorrow, there will be a different virologist on the
radio, with a completely different opinion.

Delta is still driving Covid in the US.

The question is for how long. Looks like it spreads much quicker among the vaccinated. Some new data shows it’s gone from 0 to 13% of cases in 2 weeks in NY and NJ. Yikes. Fortunately it appears to be milder than other strains in symptoms.

Around here, positive tests are up, as are hospitalizations.

But we're starting to see almost the same number of discharges as admissions per day.

Also, only 335 people in intensive care state wide.
That's been pretty steady.

Most of the hospitalizations are among the unvaccinated.

In NJ we're seeing more breakthrough cases.

They attribute this to the vaccines' effectiveness "waning", and not many
people getting boosters.

The hope is that Omicron may encourage people to get a booster.

My wife is a nurse.
She said, from what she's seen so far, Omicron's symptoms tend to be more like a common cold.

And, you know, encourages others to get a vaccine to begin with.

I haven't been able to find much about how omicron impacts the unvaccinated. I see that symptoms overall seem to be more mild, but those reports don't distinguish between symptoms in vaccinated and unvaccinated folks.

My overall sense is that for the vaccinated, boosted folks we're all going to have to get used to (and should have already, honestly) the idea that we'll get Covid, and it's not a big deal because we're vaccinated. Unfortunately, there's such idiocy prevalent in society today that we're dealing with a September 11th of deaths each week when we have the ability to have turned this into the common cold.

Initial reports out of South Africa were that Omicron had similar symptoms and severity in vaccinated and unvaccinated people. There the reports were that it was like a mild cold for about 48 hours and then the person was over it. If these initial reports continue to be true it marks the beginning of the end of the pandemic. This is how most epidemics end with the virus mutating into less lethal forms with each mutation. Public health officials, of course, have to be on guard for a rare mutation into a more lethal form, which did happen, for instance, in 1918 with the Kansas flu going to Spain and mutating into the more deadly "Spanish flu." The original SARS virus, which has many similarities to SARS-CoV-2 (including the rare J-shaped morbidity and mortality curve), did mutate itself out of relevance. Let's hope that's what's happening now with our Covid pandemic.

There was also a report on the radio that Omicron does not discriminate based on age.
But as you said, so far the symptoms are in line with a common cold.

As far as the mutations becoming less lethal, one doctor was saying that, this is how a virus survives.
Doesn't do any good if it kills the host.

I found that interesting too considering the university has a mandate on masks in indoor spaces.

It’s going to be an ugly few weeks. The omicron virus is highly contagious. If you’re vaxxed and boosted it’s like a cold, according to what’s been reported so far. Brace yourselves, this is going to be a bumpy ride for a while.

Just saw a story that the NFL is revising its Covid protocols.

No more weekly tests for fully vaccinated, asymptomatic players.

We already have 31 games scheduled so I do not believe that we can unless SC Upstate cancels in the next few hours.

As if fully vaccinated, asymptomatic players who have the virus can't spread it. The NFL is just interested in getting this season done and really doesn't care about the welfare of the public at large.

Well that didn’t last long, omicron is now 73% of new cases in the US per the CDC.
