Pretty high praise for Mr. Sears, picking him first team all MAC… Hope they are right but, is a pretty bold pick.
They picked three guys from Buffalo as first teamers as well. Unless Buffalo wins the regular season by 3 or 4 games, I would be very surprised to see this. Until recently, a large nod was given to the seniors in the league…

Thanks for sharing! Your last sentence lends me to want to ask: is it this way in many/most leagues throughout the country? It's always bothered me when Seniors in the MAC get the nod on single season awards over underclassmen that most people would say outplayed them.

Whitford's seat has to be pretty warm. I can't recall the Cardinals doing anything noteworthy in his tenure.

Agreed. This doesn’t seems right to me either. There are no guarantees on what the future holds and that the underclassman player will be worthy of (or otherwise get the opportunity) to be honored when he’s an upperclassman. I’d be willing to bet there have been a significant number of situations when underclassman have deserved it early on and for whatever reason (injuries, a change in coaching style, transferred out, just not having as good of a year, etc.) have not received the recognition later. Additionally, with transfers being even more prevalent in this day and age, someone may transfer in the following year(s) and be honored at season’s end and take away that player’s perceived “rightful future upperclassman honors”.

Toledo has NO size. Oh my God. Their 6'10 redshirt junior tore his ACL this summer and will miss the season. They have a 6'11 freshman from Romania whose only other offers were Chicago State and SIU-Edwardsville. Everyone else has a small forward body at best.

That's too bad about AJ Edu, if that's who you're talking about. If he's done for the year that would be 3 straight seasons he's missed almost entirely.

Not disagreeing about UT's size, but JT Shumate, who came out of Newark High School as a 6-7 perimeter player, has developed into a nice inside presence up at Toledo. Perhaps out of necessity. I remember the first Ohio-UT matchup last year when Shumate had several dunks on one end of the floor and some blocks on the other in a dominant UT win. He and Milner, also 6-7, are a bit undersized but are a formidable inside pair.

Williams and Mballa deserve first-team recognition. Segu? Maybe unless you believe in one player at each position and then it's tough to put him and Sears, both pure point guards, on the first team. I would move Ryan Rollins to the first team as the league's best 2-guard and move Segu down to 2nd team.

Yeah OU, I was just going off of my memory and not really basing it on hard data but, I did go back to 2016 - 2021 (MAC awards didn’t list yrs with team placement before 2017) just to see if there were any seasons of note. It’s funny because I can still remember folks not being happy with the 2018 - 2019 selections and Jason Carter being only on the third team All MAC. Turns out for that year, it was senior heavy with 11 of the 15 ALL MAC team slots being given to seniors. So ,in that year, there may have been something going on. Or, it could be just random luck. Other years did not appear to be so senior top heavy.

Tough hit for EDU ... but up the road a piece I'm hearing the Zips have struck gold with a 7-footer who can really score. That would be a game-changer in a big way in terms of top tier MAC teams.

On another front there are slew of transfer PGs around the league including Dennis at Toledo, Castenada at Akron and Carey at Kent plus at least two others at BG. And all were starters at their previous haunts, mostly at A-10 level or higher. I believe in Sears, and have ??? about Segu, but they will not be the only quality guards in the MAC by a long shot.

Might have to go back to 2001, or 2002 to find this many high-level PGs in the league.

There was a stretch where they would only give Player of the Year to a senior whether or not the best player was one. But those are different voters.

If Sears makes 1st Team All-MAC, then this season has endless possibilities.

Three Man Weave did a nice job with this preview.

This is going to be a FUN season for MAC basketball. The bottom tier teams won't be as bad as they were last season. The top 8 or 9 teams are very talented.

Who is this 7 footer at Akron? There is one showing on the roster.

JSF, now that you mention it, it does sound familiar that the senior bias conversation was largely in regards to the POY... That said, I do remember the aforementioned Carter snub and it's appearance of senior bias creating some board consternation as well.

Jeff, I like Three Man Weave's podcasts quite a bit. They are excited to cover the high ranked teams but, you can also tell that they enjoy talking about well played basketball, regardless of the national implications. Their weakness is probably that they have a 10,000 ft. view of the league, whereas Blue Ribbon and the like actually talk directly with the teams.

In at least 3 of the games he started for Preston, Sears was our best player. He facilitated, scored at will inside and was a defensive standout. Preston was a decent defender but relied on his athleticism and got burnt sometimes. Sears is a legit All-MAC defensive player. I could see a world where Carter, Wilson and BVP all enjoy playing less minutes and scoring a little less for that team success and fresher legs. And McDay and B-Rod will always get there's in chunks. If Schmock can give Sears some time to rest this team will be as balanced as we've had. If Schmock isn't ready for D-1 ball, then Sears will play 38 minutes per game and lead the team in scoring.

That made me so mad. All these years later, I remember he shot 38% that season. 38%!

I count 8 seniors and grad students on the Buffalo roster. There's going to be a lot to replace up there after this season.

In the past youth was indicative of likely improving it the future. I'm sure that will continue to be to to some extent. But with the transfer pool who knows who will be on their roster next season.
