Some terrific comments in Creighton game thread about next year and thought it would be a good idea to start a thread on it.

Many have already said it...we need that rim protector. A 6'7 athletic guy who can jump out of the gym and create havoc. That to me is the missing piece heading into next season. We were exposed not having that big-time protector against Creighton.

In a weird way, I think this was the best possible case scenario for us to have Preston return. We won an NCAA tournament and he should still come back. I thought he needed to have two great games to get back into 2nd round discussion. JP was average/good against Virginia (average by JP standards) and he was never in it against Creighton. One thing that stood out to me was how many times he was knocked to the ground in the Creighton game. Come back and hit the weight-room and can you imagine JP with 10-15 pounds of more muscle? Outside shot needs to get better. The NBA game now is guys pulling up from 30 feet and nailing it...JP isn't there. JP is one of the smartest dudes to come through this program and I just don't see how he comes out. Test the waters....get the NBA grade from scouts and then come on back and have an All-American season. If this happens, he's a first-round draft pick in 2022. He also gets #0 retired in the Convo rafters forever.

Dwight Wilson. Praying he comes back. He lost steam these last two games. Just had trouble jumping off the floor and running the court. Not what we saw during that great run where he couldn't miss a shot for three games. I have to believe COVID has been an issue there. Would love to get one more season out of Dwight.

Who transfers? I know it's always a sensitive topic, but we desperately need a scholarship to open up to go after the rim protector we discussed.

Who steps up next year out of this group? White, Towns, Foster or Miguel? At least one needs to provide consistent quality minutes. We can't waste any scholarships.

Schedule. I have to believe we will be in a massive pre-season tournament. Along with that, Boals needs to schedule at least three games against pre-season top 25 teams. I know they will be on the road, but it must be done. The experience of those Nov/Dec games against teams like Virginia and Creighton will be invaluable come March 2022. Would love to schedule at least one of those games in Allen Fieldhouse, Cameron Indoor or Rupp Arena. Of course, the challenge is also going to be who is going to want to play Ohio in non-conference game next year?

Already looking forward to November rolling around. Wish we could fast-forward to it right now. This 2020-2021 team will be remembered forever. Jeff Boals raised a banner in his first March as Ohio's coach and it was a hell of a fun ride.

I'm not as optimistic in regards to the potential transfers. I really, really hope we don't lose multiple starters to transfer. I could see a domino effect coming, where one of our guys gets lured to a P5 school and that causes others to consider any and all incoming interest.

I wasn't talking starters transferring. I'm talking about bench guys who didn't see the floor. I don't see any guy in the starting five transferring to another school. The bond with Boals seems too strong.

I'm not so certain a rim protector is needed as much as we need to get stronger and quicker on the wings 2-4. That's where Creighton manhandled us. All of their guys were long, strong and physical once the ball went up attacking the glass.

I'm curious to see what a summer in the weight room and gym does for some of the guys. We desperately need someone else to step up in the paint and this offseason we may not be able to rely on a transfer with no open schollies. Gonna be hard for a guy to walk away from a championship team.

Don't disagree with that at all. Goes back to who steps up next year? Can a guy like White develop? Needs to hit the weight room hard over next 6 months.

I want to believe it, I really do. I want to believe that Boals has what it takes to keep his guys. I've just seen this play out before and the P5 has always won (so far).

Just saw a tweet from Jason Arkley that "Boals will have to re-recruit his entire roster, just like every other coach in the Country."

This is obviously a unique year but with so much up in the air there may be some high school seniors that unexpectedly become available because the teams they have committed to don't have openings. Going to be a zoo.

I can't see Dwight transferring. He joined us before knowing that transfers would unilaterally be granted immediate eligibility, so there was a plan to be in Athens for two years.

JP should absolutely declare for the draft but hold off on hiring an agent. With luck, he could be picked somewhere, but I think he's on the outside looking in. Everyone's worry seems to be that he would transfer elsewhere to raise his exposure and prove himself on a bigger stage night in and night out. That's only going to happen if he finishes his undergrad this year. Is that going to happen?

BVP sounds committed to earning two master's degrees. Unless he finishes one this spring, it would be detrimental to uproot that goal and leave. I don't see the angle of him leaving, from a basketball or academic standpoint.

I can't imagine anyone else in our end of year eight man rotation going anywhere.

I don't think this rim protector is absolutely necessary to find. It's been mentioned on this board that AJ Clayton plans to graduate from Philo early and join the roster next year. He's not the rim protector and someone needs to leave in order for him to even have a scholarship.

What we do need is more depth off the bench. We could use three guys stepping up in the offseason to command a consistent spot in the rotation. I'd like to think Sam Towns at 6'9'' with athleticism and shooting range has the potential. Jalen White might be the best pure shooter on the team, but can he put the rest of the pieces together? Someone from the Rifen/Nolan/Colin group needs to command their spot. We put Colin in the backup center spot because he happened to not be a liability, but we can get more there.

The mid-majors will be the most negatively impacted by seniors staying an extra year. The extra scholarships don't count against the allotted totals. The issue is athletic budgets and who has the extra money for the extra scholarships. The P5 and BE teams will come up with the money. Can teams like Ohio cover a couple extra scholarships? I doubt it for most mid-major schools that also have football programs.

Good thoughts here. I agree with a lot of it. It's the transfer era and I can't imagine we lose nobody, I just hope the core starters stay and run this thing back.

As for who to step up next year, the guy I want to see get more floor time is Jalen White. That kid can flat out shoot the basketball. We need that threat on the perimeter. Roderick is a good shooter but he seems pretty inconsistent, sort of a great game or he disappears. I did like that he was putting the ball on the deck more this year and trying to get to the rim instead of just being a shooter, though. White shot the ball well when he played, he just didn't play much. I'd assume he might have been a defensive liability.

I'd also expect a jump from Sears, who was great this year as a freshman. As good as he is at the foul line, I have to think his outside stroke will come. If he was a threat from the arc or even with a dreaded mid range jumper, I'd have to think he'd be a very difficult guy to defend. I'm also expecting a jump in Granger. There's no questioning the guy's motor and effort, he just needs to learn to play defense without fouling and play with a little more control.

I try not to crap on any of these kids by name. Lord knows what people would have said about my game years ago. But every time Granger comes into the game I can only think of Bucky Rumpke.

I give Granger a ton of credit for his effort. Every time he entered a game, I know we all held our breath and just begged for two solid minutes and then get Wilson back in there. He was thrown into an impossible situation with Foster and Miguel unable to really go this year for various reasons. At least the experience of playing this year will only make him better. But he has to hit the weight-room and lose that baby fat and become leaner and stronger.

Bigs are notoriously slow to develop. Devaughn Washington, KvK and Treg Setty all took time to develop.

Another fantastic point. I really think Foster can develop. I wanted to see him play this year. He made a big step in the off-season to get his body leaner and stronger. He looked completely different from his freshman year. Terrific comments in this thread.

Nolan's listed at 222 lbs on the roster. I was at the final in Cleveland and he looked more like 240 in warmups at least.

I thought I heard or read that somewhere too, that schools were getting a pass in 2021-22 for the scholarship totals because of the pandemic year. What that does do maybe is give us more flexibility and possibly redshirting one or two guys.

I hate to say it, but we have entered an age of free agency. At least in the age of COVID, anyone can transfer at any time and be granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA. And once COVID is over, there's no way to put that genie back in the bottle. There will be a waiver for all first-time transfers eliminating the requirement they sit out a year. (No need for anyone to rush their studies to be a grad transfer.)

This will be crushing to mid-majors. Any player who's really good will get overtures to move up to a P5 league.

All that said, I hold out hope that the bond we saw between Boals and this group will be too strong. If any coach/team could survive this transferpalooza nonsense, maybe it's this one.

Pretty hard to quantify, I'm sure, but would you all expect any sort of bump in recruiting given this tourney run from Cleveland to Indy?

JP should absolutely declare for the draft but hold off on hiring an agent. With luck, he could be picked somewhere, but I think he's on the outside looking in. Everyone's worry seems to be that he would transfer elsewhere to raise his exposure and prove himself on a bigger stage night in and night out. That's only going to happen if he finishes his undergrad this year. Is that going to happen?

This is kinda what I'm thinking too. I fully expect the "big" schools to take full advantage and pick apart mid majors. Unfortunately, it will backfire on some of the student-athletes (Simmons) who are sold snake oil only to find themselves on the bench. Albeit they will get decked out in gear and more perks and maybe some boosted numbers on social media.

Then I keep thinking "well Boals is a difference maker, he isn't like Saul or Christian," however, he may just end up in a "free agency" scenario as well after this run...maybe I'm just super bummed out still from last night

I would absolutely think so. The recruiting went up right after the win over Georgetown for Groce, it should be no different for Boals. Especially if kids see the way he cares about each of his players and they actually have FUN playing for him. Most people who watched any of this tournament run or saw the videos that the Ohio Bobcats Twitter page put up would be attracted to this program.

Remember the Kyryl saga? (Ducks and covers)

Totally get the disappointment, but this finish for me has a much different feeling after the North Carolina loss. That was bone crushing. Last night, it got to the point where you knew we couldn't battle back. Much easier to absorb a 14 point loss to Creighton than a buzzer-beater. Don't get me wrong...still hurts...but I did not sit speechless for 30 minutes like I did after the North Carolina game. These fellas will be back and it won't take 10 years to do it.

Hate to hang a gray cloud on today, but I just realized our last five MAC tournament championship years occurred with the majority of the core players as non-seniors. We've had better outcomes in the "setup" years as opposed to the most anticipated years.
