Following the NCAA's lead Kentucky is allowing Seniors to return for an extra year to play sports. Not sure what to think about this. Obviously this year's Seniors have been dealt a cruddy hand but this is going to have a trickle down effect on the kids who are now Juniors and Sophomores.

All of you out there who wanted to spend another year in high school when you were a senior raise your hand.

If you could load up on College Credit Plus classes, why not? It would be like a free year of college, and you might not even have to set foot in your school except for sports.

Was gonna rip this, then realized it's no different than graduates doing a "prep year" at some basketball factory.

No doubt the pandemic has been an epic tragedy. But our world has had many of these -- think WWI and WWII. Did high school kids in 1918 or 1945 ask for a do-over because history intervened in their otherwise tidy lives? My son was supposed to get married in Rome this June. Sucks that it can't happen, but they're moving on with plans for a ceremony in Fla. Move on...learn from history.

This is currently only a "bill", and has only passed one body of the legislature. Many do not feel this will pass the House in KY.

Not sure Kentucky has such a program. This bill is rife with problems including one sport fall athletes playing one more year then dropping out after the season but already having graduated from school. Crazy!

Kentucky has a dual credit program, just like OHIO's.

Yes it does, there are statutory and academic concerns, academics need to come first. I feel for kids vying for scholarships but I wouldn’t want my 14 year old daughter being courted by 19 year old super seniors.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes

Heck yeah!
-That extra year might get them reedin at a 5th grade level
-That extra year might get them threw long division
-That extra year might_______

Opens the whole state up for even better jokes and slams. The old "did you hear about the Kentucky Bride" or other retreads may take a back seat to the jokes about the educational system over there.

Except that it is taking a spot from a Junior or Senior who isn't going to get that extra year. It's just passing the brunt of this to another kid.

And it might go on down the line because it would give an extra year to anyone in grades 9-12 this year. So there could be fifth-year seniors to accommodate for the next four years.

In addition, the bill would apply to all students, not just athletes, so there could be additional overcrowding issues in schools.

And as another current thread under "General" points out - just because a student in HS can take "college level" classes it does not mean 1) it is a quality class, nor 2) makes them prepared for true college curriculum.

I know at Ohio University, Athens High Seniors can take classes. I had an employee who had gotten almost a whole year in before she actually was a freshman. I seem to recollect that she actually attended classes. She finished her degree in three years so whatever she took earlier did not seem to slow her down. If anyone else reads this and can chime in as well.

Not that I grew up in Athens, but I was able to graduate with an Associates and hit the ground running at OU. Even took cluster my second semester on campus. Since I was determined to graduate early I did miss out on joining some orgs like Fixed Income, Alpha Kappa Psi, etc. In hindsight it probably would have been better to pick up a second major and go all 4 years

I just keep thinking of that one senior that nobody really likes being REALLY excited about having another year of high school.

Like O'Banion from Dazed & Confused.

nor 3) are they academically or maturity wise prepared to truly benefit from the experience.

Athens Middle School seventh graders can take classes at OU. It's not just high school seniors.

Kentucky already allows 6 years of eligibility.

. . . starting in junior high school.

Take OJ Mayo for example - he played high school basketball in Kentucky as a 7th grader and I believe he won some all-state honors as an 8th grader. He then returned home to Cincinnati to play as a high school frosh and I believe he finished his high school days in West Virginia.

Mayo is actually from Huntington, WV, went to Rose Hill to play in Jr High, then him and Bill Walker went to North College Hill and then he finished his senior year (until suspended) at Huntington.
