The reason would be that the NCAA requires participants in its tourney to have seven straight days of negative covid tests for players and coaches, so the teams might not want to run the risk of infections at the conference tourneys. The article also raises the possibility that some conferences might cancel their tourneys this year for the same reason. For example, the MAC tournament ends on March 13, which is within seven days of the first round of the NCAA tournament, so there might be some concern there. What I hope is that leagues like the MAC go ahead with the tournament to at least benefit from some TV money. If I'm a MAC president, I take the chance of a COVID flare-up and play the tournament rather than automatically advancing Toledo to the NCAA Tournament. It would be such a shame to not play the MAC tourney. I feel this year's OU team has the pieces to potentially build toward a late-season run, much like last year's team was doing. I would hate to have the rug pulled out from under the Bobcats two years in a row. These bozos should have moved up their tourneys to late Feb/early March, fly the winner instantly to Indy, and coop up until the tourney. This way they get it out of the way and can be healthy. I sense games will get cancelled in Indy, and there's nothing like picking up free win shares because a power conference got greedy and wanted to host their games. That to me is the real prize in this, and why no one was that forward thinking is beyond me. As the article points out, any number of reasons they are turning it away...including not wanting to jump ahead of others (if you know any nurses, you understand that answer). They other reality is that the percent of those (across the board) who now say they will take the vaccine when offered is steadily climbing. I saw a Newsweek study that placed the number at 52% - up from 28% late last year. I've seen other studies where the "take" percent is much higher - well into the 60s. The trend indicates it should be in the 70s by mid March. Reality is as circumstances change (in this case, proof that the vaccine is working and the side effects are limited) more and more will opt to get the vaccine. A famous example of how changing circumstances and knowledge impacts views is that in May 1940 - 94% of Americans felt we should not join WWII. I don't need to tell you want the percent was in mid-December 1941. Mask up. Stand Back. Get the vaccine. From the article did you go ahead and link to the CDC website and read the data. But it appeared to me that when i read the data that the 38% was a median answer that the nursing home workers ranged in between 23.6% and 56.8% of workers had gotten the shot. It also only covers workers who were offered the shot at there place of work. So if someone went to get theirs at a different vaccination center they would not be counted in this number. This is also a number that was based off of payroll numbers. And there is a chance a percentage of the people who did not get the shot could of been office or support people who were not offered the shot on the first go around. I would agree that these numbers are still not ideal but i think the headline is much worse then the details.
