Anyone else concerned this might not happen? I don't know how college athletics survives if we go two years with no NCAA basketball tournament. It sounds like the NCAA has already been discussing March Madness bubbles.

Ivy has cancelled winter sports.

This was all colossally stupid thinking students could mingle on campus and not spread the virus. Pros can isolate. These guys can’t.

I think by March things should be substantially better. Probably 20% of the country is going to have had it by then in spite of all of the country's efforts and we might have another 30% or 40% of the population vaccinated. So when it starts to warm up again it ought to be a lot easier to control than it is now. The problem for basketball is December and January. I don't see how if one player gets it on a basketball team that nearly all of them won't.

People just need to be more intelligent about this.

Until there is an effective vaccine that's widely available, you can't have large gatherings like you used to. Right now, there are several thousand people outside the White House standing shoulder-to-shoulder, without masks. They didn't learn from the super-spreader gathering that occurred at the White House less than a month ago when a Supreme Court nominee was introduced. They didn't learn from the Sturgis bikers who didn't follow common sense protocols and wound up with hundreds getting sick. They didn't learn from the weddings and other social gatherings that turned into super-spreader events. So probably hundreds, if not thousands, of those outside the White House today will be infected and will spread the virus to thousands or tens of thousands more. If they don't care about their own health, that's up to them. But they'll wind up infecting, and even killing, other people. They follow the law and don't smoke in restaurants and other places so that others don't get sick or die from second-hand smoke. But they refuse to wear a simple mask that could keep others from getting sick or dying. Selfish idiots!

Masks, social distancing, screenings, and maybe even shutdowns will be the new norm until an effective vaccine is widely available. Until then, it's the selfish idiots who are keeping us from living our lives as we used to.

Rick Pitino is calling for a delay to start the b-ball schedule due to the covid tsunami now facing us. He wants a conference only schedule starting sometime later shooting for a May Madness. Since it was the Ivy League that got the dominos starting to fall canceling March Madness earlier this year they may well again be the leaders in shutting down the winter sports. Covid just SUCKS!

This seems like a viable option but I hate the idea of no non-conference games. How can the committee even begin to compare strength of schedule between teams from different conferences?

At the end of the day, it's about the future. On Monday, he majority of people in this country could not tell you who won the World Series, the NBA championship, the Masters or who the best team in the NFL is.

We can survive a year or two without sports i agree. But can sports survive after a year or two of not being played. The second thing i would bring up is i think sports make staying at home much easier and helps people keep their sanity better then not having them. i find them therapeutic. and when there were no sports i was out more i was at home improvement store and other places to get things to fix my house because i was bored.

So i don't think we should have sports because we are worried about who the champions are we need them to have a distraction from covid.

I'm for having sports, so long as the health and safety of the players, coaches, refs, and others associated with the program aren't jeopardized. That likely means that fans won't be allowed. Trouble is, once the players, their families and others successfully lobbied for football games to be played, some started lobbying for fans to be there. Suddenly, some SEC teams were letting in thousands of fans instead of hundreds, and coaches from other teams complained about the unfair competitive advantage. So those schools allowed more fans in. And that helped cause the fall covid surge. Some sports haven't had that issue. Horse racing, for example, makes the bulk of its money from betting, which is largely done off-site. But sports like football and basketball rely heavily on ticket sales and concessions. They can probably last this year without fans in attendance but another year would put a lot of teams in deep trouble. That's why the virus needs to be controlled soon.

Here's what the Ivy League says about it:

The Ivy League, which maintains that athletics should be “kept in harmony with the essential educational purposes of the institution,” has not staged any varsity competitions since March.

Pitino has asked to postpone the start of the season because he's had issues getting practices in due to covid. He wants a May Madness.

Similar stuff going on elsewhere. NMSU is moving to Phoenix for practices because the state of NM has prohibited gatherings of more than five people. Texas A&M won't go to South Dakota for a tournament there because of the outbreak.
