Yesterday the university announced DJ's induction into the Hall of Fame:

https://www.ohio.edu/news/2020/09/ohio-university-announc...

It lists DJ as having graduated in 2015? This was news to me, did I miss something? I am overjoyed that DJ got his degree, the Hall of Fame was a given once the degree was finished. I hope they wait until we can have a full(ish) Convo to bring DJ back and raise his number and appreciate his accomplishments with him in attendance.

Anyone have any more info on this?

This would have been done at Homecoming this year. They are not retiring his number.

How is DJ Cooper the 3rd and has Jeff Boals offered him a scholarship yet?

I've seen crazier things happen.

Do you have insight as to why?

I guess I should have said "not raising his number." There are only four numbers hanging in the Convo and it took years before any of those were put up there - over 30 in the case of Carolyn Mast.

2 observations:

All jerseys hanging in the Convo are for players being 'honored', except for Frank Baumholz, whose jersey is retired.

The one 'honored' jersey hanging in a separate, peripheral section, is that of Caroline Mast. I think it needs to be moved.

I would agree her jersey should be moved alongside the rest. I also maintain there are a few other jerseys, including that of DJ Cooper, that belong in the rafters. I would add Brandon Hunter to that list, and I'm sure we could find 3-4 others who legitimately belong up there.

Just curious what standards you feel should be had for such an honor?

Retired? You put his numbers over Gary?

Players whose name is mentioned as being All-MAC for several years during their time at Ohio. I'll name some names I would put in there since I've been a Bobcat that aren't already up there. I'm not saying "retire" numbers. I'm saying hang the jersey.

Also, I've said it before -- there should be a big banner up there with All MAC players - men and women. There should be a MAC POY banner as well. Stuff like that is free advertising, if you will, for success and tradition. Success and tradition not only helps recruit players, but it helps attract fans. We all agree winning sells tickets, right? Well giving new students/fans the impression and feel that you're a winner ought to help sell tickets at least a little bit. And there isn't nearly enough inside the walls of The Convo that speaks to the number of good years that happened there.

Back on track -- since I've been a Bobcat (fall '95), names I would put up there are below. My standard would be one of three things: All-MAC multiple times, top-10-12 in school history in scoring, or MAC POY.

Gary Trent (obviously there now)
Geno Ford
Brandon Hunter
Leon Williams
Jerome Tillman
DJ Cooper
Tony Campbell

Outside of my years, I would add:
Paul "Snoopy" Graham
Danny Nee
(and I'm sure I'm missing someone worthy of mention)

All of these guys above are talked about as legends in The Convo, and should be recognized as such in my opinion.

****And adding a star here -- I would have, if he would have stayed for that final year, put Jaaron Simmons into this conversation. I also would have put Jordan Dartis in the conversation, had he continued his upward trajectory before injuries derailed his last two seasons. Both would have approached top 12 in the all time scoring list. Dartis could have been an All-MAC 1st team, and Simmons was definitely of that caliber. But that's speculation. The names above this paragraph are not.

His number should be up there with Gary...yes...as retired. DJ has the stats and something Gary never came close to achieving....three NCAA Tournament wins. But Gary is the greatest player in Ohio history to wear the green and white.

I'll add this -- I don't think any number should be "retired", meaning no one else ever wears the number. I definitely think DJ's jersey should be up there next time fans can be in the seats at 100% capacity.

Is DJ next in line?

I don't think Tony, Leon, or Jerome necessarily should be up there. I think Geno and Brandon are in the discussion. Snoopy Graham feels like he's overdue. To me, you need to reach an arbitrary legendary status to get your jersey in the rafters. DJ without question, but are there earlier players who should be honored first.

Outside of men's basketball, I think Kiyanna Black should have her jersey honored. What about volleyball? Ellen Herman? Kelly Lamberti? Laura Hageman? Abby Gilleland? Any wrestlers?

Wrestlers don't wear jerseys. :-)

But I'd vote for Harry Houska.

Personally I think it would be cool to make the #5 the official Captain's number of Ohio Athletics. If you wear the #5 you carry that like a badge of honor of all the great #5s who came before you. Across all sports, not just men's basketball. Though someone more informed than me could say whether or not any other sports have had them.

DJ should be next in line. I'm with you on Tony Campbell, Leon Williams and Jerome. I just don't think those players have the total package to be considered. Good players...yes. Retired jersey worthy...no.

Snoopy Graham...my god yes. Absolutely should be hanging from the rafters.

When Frankie Baumholtz's number was retired and raised to the rafters pre-game, Ed Sears looked up at the rafters, looked down at his uniform number, then looked back up to the rafters. He had a different number for the next game.

Seeing how DJ failed a pregnancy test, should we put his number up in a green or a white jersey?
