Your connection to obscure other colleges - by request.

By request of Alan Swank, based on my celebration over North Alabama's win at Lipscomb in hoops... and I will explain my interest in UNA eventually... what are some of the obscure colleges or sports programs you guys have.

Pretty sure there will be some Denison and Kenyon mentions. Maybe Rio Grande and the dominant post play of Bevo Francis if you are REALLY long in the tooth.

Anyway, that's why I follow them so closely. I can't wait to hear Greencat's story as well as others as why they have an affinity to a certain school and team.

When my father and my aunt came over from the old country as small children who didn't speak a word of English (orphans from Latvia), they were sent to live with relatives in Florence Alabama of all places. The grade school they attended was called "Kilby" and is now the math building or was until not long ago on what is now the campus of the University of North Alabama (formerly Florence State University) and they also went to to Coffee High very close to the present UNA campus. When they got a bit older, they moved to Nashville and after high school, went to Vanderbilt. (where my oldest sister is also an alum) One of the few places were got to go outside of Nashville when we were little kids was Florence Alabama, as our father had inherited some real estate there on the main drag, right by the campus. So without going into much more boring details, I went to Vandy games growing up and have always pulled for them through thick and thin. My interest in UNA sports doesn't go back as far. I started to get interested in them when my daughter went to tour the school and they gave us football tickets back when they were a D-2 powerhouse. They also gave us free football tickets when my son toured the school around four years later but my interest in their basketball didn't really start until recently when they decided to go division one. I was very disappointed that the OVC who had all the schools that would be their new local rivals indicated they were not interested in adding a school. This was a mistake and the OVC will eventually flip-flop on it. Especially if Florence gets a new football stadium or renovates the current one. (UNA plays in a municipal city stadium a few blocks from campus but has renovated the on-campus gym as much as it could be done with).

Going d-1aa (FCS) in football looks like an uphill climb - they went 4-7 after decades of being really good at the d-2 level. Janoris Jenkins of the New Orleans Saints played at UNA when it was d-2.

My non-OHIO rooting interest are as follows (not necessarily in order):

1. USNA. There are two reasons here: One, I lived in Annapolis for most of my life until the age of five, when my father taught at the Naval Postgraduate School. The first collegiate game I ever attended was a Navy baseball game my father took me to at about age 3 1/2. I still remember it. My parents moved back to Athens in 1950, when the PG school moved to Monterey, Calif. Two, I served in the U.S. Navy.

2. The University of Minnesota, my mother's alma mater. As a young boy she taught me the U of M fight song; it was the first college fight song I ever learned the words to. Ski-U-Mah!

3. Marshall, particularly football. I was on the faculty at Marshall in 1970 and was the co-adviser of The Parthenon, the student newspaper. We lost our sports editor, Jeff Nathan, in the crash. I had become very close to Jeff. He had been to our house. I had played pickup basketball with him in the university gym. It was my idea that he fly with the team for this game, after he had driven to several previous contests. I suppose that I've always had a little "survivor's guilt" over that. Whenever the Herd wins a big game, I say to myself, "This one's for Jeff!" I was recently able to raise enough funds to endow a sports writing scholarship in his name.

4. Murray State. Taught there after leaving Marshall, 1974-77.

Tulane-----our youngest attended from frosh through PhD and played club soccer there. His senior year was the Katrina year, also. Love the Garden District area and most of NOLA. In fact, play the Tulane fight song for all Alexander girls' soccer and hoops games and when I ask them why, they respond "because we can".

Great thread!

My non-Bobcat rooting interests are, somewhat in order:

Cincinnati: I'm a UC fan since about 1989ish. It's my dad's Alma mater, as well as the Alma mater for 4 cousins, and my "favorite" uncle. It's also where my parents met. Strong family tie to the point that I thought I was going to go to school there. Then I visited OU. ;-)

Dayton: My sister's Alma mater. I was hooked after visiting her for a few weekends and going to games at UD Arena while we were both still in college. I maintain there's no other place in Ohio better than UD's atmosphere -- even when they weren't as good as they are now. I recommend that anyone who is a fan of college hoops gets there for a game sometime.

College of Charleston: My sister and brother in law's Alma mater. Visiting there for the Charleston Classic cemented my loose rooting interest in them.

Butler: I'm no die-hard of them, and I don't own any gear, but since visiting Hinkle, I'll root for them when on TV unless they play one of the above. See the tie to Coach Holtmann too. Gotta love that place and it's pure love for basketball. Another place that everyone who loves hoops should see.

I've rooted for OSU on and off in hoops as well. (still don't in football) I rooted for them in the 90's in the Jimmy Jackson years, went strongly away from them under Thad, and have started rooting for them under Holtmann, because frankly, I like Coach Holtmann and he has that small Bobcat tie.

Beyond that, I root for people tied to Ohio, UC, or UD, to do well. Fuss, Offutt, Geno, etc. I'm rooting for Mick Cronin to do well at UCLA.

I couldn't name any of the current players or coaches, but I keep aware of Duquesne women's basketball. I have a cousin who transferred and finished her eligibility with the Dukes.
