Look, I know they don't mean anything. Just introduce the teams (last one we had was men and women combined), maybe a little team scrimmage, 3-point shootout, maybe some dunks...but mainly introduce this (nearly) brand new men's team/staff and remind everyone the women's team is loaded this year coming off a 30-win season. It's been hinted at around here a lot that interest has lacked in the last few years with the men's on-court results, and there seems to be some buzz around the program with Boals' hiring. Something like this might help keep that buzz rolling.

But mainly, I selfishly want to see what we have and learn who all the new faces are. How hard would it be for the athletic department to pull something like this off? I know we had one a few years ago with Saul, maybe in his second year. I remember Kenny Kaminski in a 3-point shootout.

I don't understand why it's so hard to organize as well? Get it done.

They couldn't find a way to incorporate "Stand for Defense" so they gave up trying to make it work.

Agree - with Boals and new staff, and all the new players seems a no brainer - and should not be that complicated to organize and conduct - And get many to see the Women who may not see them during the season due to extra travel required

It seems to me that the last Saturday home game in October vs. Kent State would be the ideal time to schedule an event at the Convo and to genuinely attempt to generate some enthusiasm. Depending on the starting time of the football game the event could be held either before the kickoff in Peden (assuming a 4pm or later kickoff) or after the game (assuming a noon or 2 pm kickoff). I'd be really disappointed to see the Athletic Department miss this opportunity to get things started on the right foot for Coach Boals and the team.

I'll return to a suggestion from a few years back - not too difficult to have such an event uptown - interest has declined - take it to the people - don't make them come to you.

Really? Why is it absurd?

temp floor and mobile baskets - such an endeavor

https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/college/asu/2017/1... /

FYI - ESPNU carried the Pitt event live - and Pitt has continued to hold it outdoors.

But yea - I see your point - I mean I know they could incorporate events with other students - like perhaps a 3 on 3 Greek championship or middle school / HS competition to get the locals involved or maybe an open dunk contest - but who in the hell would go uptown on a Friday or Saturday night for this when they could go sit in the Convo instead. Too bad - would be a great way to breath some life into recruiting for the Ozone as well.

Let's remember Midnight Madness is a marketing event, not a basketball practice.

Except that some of our "fans" would likely turn it into a drunken brawl. They did, after all, have to reroute the Homecoming parade away from Court Street after beer was thrown on marchers. Big downside potential, IMO.

Do it on one of the greens, on the other hand? Excellent idea.

Listen I appreciate the out of the box thinking, but the logistics and cost make this an almost certain no for Ohio athletics... but Ok, I'll play along. Let's just forget for a moment the completely different universes that Ohio and Pitt exist in (financially at least). let's talk dollars and sense... how much to rent a portable floor? how much do we lose if it rains? Where can a full size basketball court fit, near uptown, where a lot of people can actually see the court and participate in this gimmick?

Great questions - so let's agree it is worth a call to Pitt (who must see some value as it is becoming an annual event there) and Arizona (and Xavier) all of whom have held their event outdoors since this was first batted around years ago. See what the costs, safety, security, and logistic needs are. Then figure out if is it even possible, and if so, where it could it be held. Let's also look at past Midnight Madness agendas ands see what is really needed (generally include: 3-point costs, dunk contest, and yes, coaches free throw shooting contests).

You nailed it - Midnight Madness is a gimmick - has been since Lefty Driesell started it at Maryland. Its all about fan engagement. So the Athletic Department places a few calls and we go from there.

As SBH said, maybe it is not uptown, but on a green - Hell, set up lights, bleachers and a few hoops (no floor needed) outside Peden in the parking lot. Just get it up and out of the Convo to reflect the new and exciting regime. And take it out of an arena where even if the bottom bowl is filled, it still looks like no one is there - and put it into a festival setting where its alive with multiple events.

Gus Macker rolls into 2 to 3 small towns every weekend during the spring and summer months and brings along one temporary center court:

Put it together Friday night, tear it down Sunday afternoon and then on to the next town. Individual pieces of flooring that snap together sort of like a jigsaw puzzle. Very doable, IMO.

There is a tournament in Waverly in June - You would think if Waverly could figure out a way to afford it, Ohio could as well.

Once we start winning the promotions will take care of themselves. It is hard to do this sort of thing on just wishing for success. The reason this is a big deal at basketball powerhouses is because they have won and fans are eager to see the first practice. Hopefully, we will win and we can have a real debate as to whether this should take place. Let's just concentrate on getting butts in the seats for games--winning will go along way in doing that!

Hmmmm....Gus Macker worked (it's rapidly declined) because 300+ teams pay good money to play on those courts, not come to watch someone else play on those courts. Totally different financial model. Court rental, hoops all that can easily be rented. However, the University is cutting $19.3 Million from the academic units, and on top of renting the court and hoops, you will have to pay for the closing of streets and police coverage up town. Neither would be cheap. Want fans to go to games? Just win!

Maybe don't think so big with a full court and game. Just one portable hoop on the bricks for 3 point contest and dunk contest in front of old Baker. No dribbling required. A mic and some good speakers and we are good to go.

There are pluses to events like these, but coaches need to weigh benefits/drawbacks to using practice time that counts against NCAA limits for this type of activity against those which contribute to figuring out rotations, individual improvement, etc.
