Buffalo by 7-10 points. Probably the most athletic team to ever play in the MAC.

The 2012 Sweet 16 would probably lose 8 out of 10 games to this year's Beefs.  However, put them up against the 1964 Elite 8 team and that might be reversed.  For those how remember that team do you think anyone on this UB team could really handle Don Hilt and Mike Haley?  For you younger folks, Don HIlt was kind of like Gary Trent, but bigger and stronger.  His dunks make Trent's look like gentlemanly layups.

This was where I was too. Keep in mind the bracket helped Ohio that year, once they got past UM, their second game was actually easier.

Don Hilt was four inches shorter than Gary Trent.

With all due respect to Don Hilt, he must have been Dominique Wilkins before there was Dominique Wilkins if he made Trent's dunks look like "gentlemanly layups".

His shoulders were manmouth. He looked like a football player with pads on without pads! He was one massive dude. Also, coaches used to do all kinds of things with heights and weights. What was listed wasn’t always completely accurate. Not saying Hilt was taller, but I doubt the difference was four inches.

Buffalo is good I'll grant you that, but DJ and company beat some pretty good teams to get to the Sweet 16 and Offutt was a Free-throw away from upsetting North Carolina to get Ohio to the Elite 8, Buffalo might have better players but that Ohio Sweet 16 team, was a fine oiled team machine coming in to the tournament and that's when it counts most. I'll take Ohio in an upset !

If this Buffalo team is as good as advertised, they should make the Sweet 16 easily, only time will tell.

He played taller and nastier. Was also a better shooter away from the basket. Remember when he put up 30+ against Notre Dame.

He was certainly better than Wilt from the foul line! ;-)

Hilt had the most explosive dunk I've ever seen. He was truly a Bobcat great.

No, Wilt has no peer in that category.

Hilt didn't just grab rebounds; he snapped them.

Just did a quick check of Hilt stats. No frosh on varsity when he played. In 77 varsity games, averaged 16.3 ppg, 10.2 rpg, shot 47% from the field and 66% from the line. In his senior season he averaged 19 ppg, 11.8 rpg, shot 74% from the line.

He passed away some years ago.

Buffalo is the first legitimate top 25 team the MAC has had in a couple decades. A couple MAC teams, like Ohio, have won a game or two (or three in Kent State's case) but they played at a high level for a few games. Buffalo has done it for a whole season.

I'll admit I never saw Hilt play in person, but I know he was a player. However, I know it was a different era and all - but compare his raw #s to Trent. He wasn't Trent.

Trent's #s by year -
Freshman: 19.0 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 1.0 bpg, 65% FG, 70% FT
Sophomore: 25.4 ppg, 11.4 rpg, 1.6 bpg, 58% FG, 72% FT
Junior: 22.9 ppg, 12.8 rpg, 0.8 bpg, 53% FG, 64% FT

Career: 22.7 ppg, 11.3 rpg, 1.1 bpg, 57% FG, 69% FT

The 2012 Sweet 16 would probably lose 8 out of 10 games to this year's Beefs. However, put them up against the 1964 Elite 8 team and that might be reversed. For those how remember that team do you think anyone on this UB team could really handle Don Hilt and Mike Haley? For you younger folks, Don HIlt was kind of like Gary Trent, but bigger and stronger. His dunks make Trent's look like gentlemanly layups.

If we are talking about pure talent being lifted from 1964 to 2019, Buffalo would name their score against Ohio. It’s just not even remotely the same game any longer. This 2019 Buffalo team has the most talent in league history.

I think Buffalo needs to win at least one game to solidify their case in the tournament. After that, it all comes down to matchups and some luck. They can’t go out in the opening round though.

Well, if you are going to play teams from two different eras against each other in a hypothetical match-up you are going to have to assume that the 1964 would have access to the same weight training and workouts that the current team has. I think the raw talent was quite high on that Elite 8 team.

This is probably true, but people are always proposing these comparisons, as did the author of this thread.

In the attempt to steer the conversation away from the nursing home crowd, I think this would be an interesting match up between this year's Bulls and 2012's Bobcats. I want to see what the Bulls end up doing in the tourney before speculating any further. I do think that this run by Buffalo is the best that the MAC has seen in some time. However, they need to make serious noise in the tourney before calling them the best. They have a favorable draw so it should be exciting to see where they end up.
