Official Women's NIT Sweet 16 Round Thread: Western Kentucky

Thursday, 7:00, in the Roundhouse.

Our mutual opponents:

Central Mich:
Western Kentucky: L 108-90 (A)
OHIO: L 88-70 (H); W 78-75 (A)

Ball St:
WKU: L 86-83 (H)
OHIO: W 90-75 (A)

Miami:
WKU: W 67-63 (A)
OHIO: L 67-61 (H); W 70-66 (A); W 74-48 (N)

Middle Tenn:
WKU: L 81-69 (A); W 67-56 (H)
OHIO: W 59-57 (H)

If we win, we’ll play the winner of the WVU/Northwestern game being played in Morgantown. Cite TBD.

Way past time for the students to show up. It doesn't appear the Athletic Dept. has put any effort into getting a student turnout.

And as someone inquired on a previous thread, yes, we are the last MAC team, men or women, still in tourney play.

It takes 4 more wins for the title. The men were there in the final in 1941 when the NIT was on par with the NCAA. Ohio, unlike other schools, has never truly recognized that feat, other than a side banner saying we were NIT runner-ups. And this was the only time, I believe, in the NCAA or NIT, that a player on the losing team won the MVP. Frank Baumholtz, our only first team All American.

Not that athletics shouldn't try, but does anyone think a significant cluster of students is going to come to a women's basketball secondary tournament against another mid-major?

Have you ever seen the effects free food can have on college kids?

Heck I was a student here when the lines for a free t-shirt outside the Oasis were dozens deep for hours. All you had to do was sign up for a credit card. I mean why not?

Free food is not the draw it used to be. Especially if they have to walk all the way to the Convo.

I was on campus for the game last Thursday, and there was absolutely zero marketing/promotion on campus for their first round game. No signs outside of the Convo, no signs around campus about a game... nothing. The Athletic Dept. doesn't care about this team, and it shows.

I hope the crowd is decent, I'd love to see this team move on to the next round and beyond.

The kids can't even take a five minute walk to the convo .. let alone take an afternoon / evening to travel to Morgantown. I am an optimist, yet unless their are major incentives I don't see it happening unfortunately.. one game at a time

Actually,in 1941,the NIT, was THE tournament.

The NCAA tournament was an after thought.

Its before my time,but my dad said that when the NIT was the top tournament,some schools skipped the NCAA's to play in the NIT.

It wasn't until the NCAA started expanding the field and making participation
mandatory,if you got selected,that the NIT lost its luster.

Stand Up and Cheer for the OHIO Women's Basketball Team prior to its WNIT Round of 16 matchup with Western Kentucky! We will gather in the event space formerly known as the Trainer's Hall of Fame, located along the concourse of the Convocation Center beginning at 5:30 p.m. All Bobcats and friends are invited to enjoy light food and beverages and an appearance from head coach Bob Boldon.

There is no cost to attend, though we do require an RSVP so that we have an accurate count for gameday. RSVPs will be accepted until noon on March 28. Also, please note that you must have a game ticket to gain access to the Convocation Center for the Bobcat Bash or for the WNIT game.

By the time you walk all the way to the Convo, you’ve burned more calories than you’d be getting for free.

Plus all the jumping and cheering at the game.

Agree, rpbobcat, in 1941, the NIT Tournament was arguably the most prestigious collegiate basketball championship in its day, and older than the NCAA.

Additionally, the NCAA was originally a tournament mostly among conference winners.
During the NIT's first 15 years or so, the winners were hailed as National Champions by some, not all, and dispute surrounded which tournament champion was superior.

2016 marked the 75th year since Ohio played for the national championship. I made the case back then to the athletic department (actually a year earlier so they'd have time to prepare), that this achievement needed to be commemorated. They passed.

As hard as it is to find dependable dry cleaners in rural areas anymore, just the mention of ANY dry cleaning business seems like an ancient reference. My wife and I are tired of having to schlep our suits and coats 35 miles to get them dry cleaned.
