With Holtman’s dismissal, the Buckeyes are on the hunt. Is Boals in play ?

I would say, Groce would be considered a high candidate.

Groce did so many great things in Illinois.

Highly doubt the Buckeye (Suckeyes) are going to be looking for coaches from the 23rd best D1 conference.

I could see Boals before Groce. Boals was an ace recruiter for Matta and that means something to the Buckeye faithful. Plus everyone still remembers JP and BVP leading us to the NCAA Tourney. And Boals lives in New Albany just outside of C-Bus. The bigger question is, if Boals leaves, would he take anyone with him (player-wise) and how fast can Cromer seal Lamar Thornton as our head coach? It should have been Dustin Ford when Groce left but no, we had to go for the Dakotan.

What evidence do we have that Lamar is a great coach? He's one of our key recruiters, right? We have some big holes in this squad.

As for Dustin Ford, there's got to be a reason he's never been a head coach. I'm guessing he prefers the second seat.

First things first, I don't think Boals is going to tO$U. Depending on his contract extension with us (any word on this at all? Did I miss anything?) then I could absolutely see him interview. I just ultimately don't think he's the hire. Could be dead wrong.

But in the event he leaves for there or anywhere else, what makes everyone think Lamar Thornton has to be "the next guy"? I think he's a good recruiter and asset to the staff. How is he at Xs and Os? As a leader? Motivator? Fund raiser? Interpersonal relationships to handle egos and handlers $$ demands?

I'm not saying he's not. I could be convinced either way honestly. I'm just trying to figure out why it's just a forgone conclusion to some. I could absolutely be swayed to support a more seasoned coach with a better resume from outside the program.

Groce refused to sell his soul to the Chicago AAU mafia. That said, there's no chance in hell to$u is hiring coach from the 23rd ranked conference in the country. This is a throwaway season for them so I'm guessing they'll ride it out until the guy they want loses in the NCAA tournament.

There are two things I hate 1) when we start the same topic in two different threads and 2) making me defend people I dont want to defend

Groce would be a great rebound hire.

This is all moot because it's not remotely going to happen, and he would be like 7th on my current potential interview list, and I can't imagine he's very high on Bjork's short list, but his failures at Illinois have been exaggerated. He's 50. He's got a .600 winning %. The cbb hall of fame is littered with guys who got a second chance.

I think he would be a great pick-up for a second run with a guy who has been there in the P5 before, had some success, continues to have success at the G5 level. Is still young. Is still a firey personality. Can still recruit. Has strong ties to Ohio.

I mean, I wouldn't take him over Oats or Kelsey, but if I was an OSU fan I wouldn't not be excited about him coming back to town. Especially in this era.

There's something to be said about continuity and culture. Especially at this level with the transfer portal. Once upon a time our program was on a trajectory that one could now argue; had it's legs cut out from underneath by going with Christian instead of taking a chance on Dustin Ford.

I remember Schaus stating he wanted a coach to make us a mid-major powerhouse similar to Gonzaga, Butler and Virginia Commonwealth. Excluding Gonzaga, how did Butler and VCU get to that status? Promoting the next man up.

That said, I think Boals is here for the long haul barring another tournament run. Which, who knows when that happens again.

With a new AD coming in, I think they are wanting to go big. I would be surprised if they take someone from a small conference.

I understand the continuity and culture angle, but that sort of assumes you've already made it to the level you want and have achieved that success...and want that culture to continue in order to maintain the standards that have been built and proven to succeed. Duke promotes from within. Butler promote(d) past tense from within. Gonzaga would likely as well. They have their "way". Do we? Is 13-11 and 5th in the MAC the "Ohio Way"?

They still owe him 12.8M. If I’m an alumnus, don’t ask me for any donations.

We aren't having a good year. It seems pretty unlikely that OSU would hire Boals. It might be a blessing that the firing happened this year.

You don't matter enough for them to bother.

I’m making that statement under the idea that Boals gets plucked after a tourney run. I’d be more in favor of the continuity to maintain momentum in that scenario. I’m in agreement with everyone on both threads, I don’t think Boals is on the OSU shortlist. I’d go as far as saying I think his P5 ship has sailed.

If South Carolina wants to keep Lamont Paris, they need to ready to pony up with a bigtime contract extension because he IS from Ohio and will be near the top of the wish list.

The bigger concerns regarding Boals is whether college basketball has reached college football's head-coach-leaves-for-top-assistant-job-and-more-pay situation. If so, I could see this happening to a lot of mid-major programs.

Interesting point but with the egos these guys have, being number 2 after being number 1 for a number of years would be very tough.

I don't think that's a concern at all.

I don't think there is any world where a current mid-major head coach is leaving for an assistant job at the college level.

College basketball is not college football.

I don't want to play any hypothetical games here, yes someone could say hey Eric Henderson you're a .500 head coach at South Dakota State, you make $300K.... do you wanna come be John Calipari's assistant? Yes. That is plausible. Is it likely? No.

Assistant coach salaries aren't as widely available, but just some quick googling - the highest paid assistant Orlando Antigua made $875K - under Calipari.

-Danny Manning looks like the 2nd highest I could find at $600,000.
-The top assistant at UNC, Brad Frederick: $264,899 (according to public record)
-Just read an article that said Diebler got a raise from $340K.

Boals spent so many years as an assistant you think theres a chance that he would go backwards for less pay? Or even somewhat hypothetically comparable pay?

Christian had a pretty good first year. He also had some studs signed. I doubt Dustin could have matched that. Of course, we also learned that Christian is an asshole, but I think any reasonable person at the time would have agreed Dustin was not the better choice.

As for the alleged benefits of continuity, I present you the examples of Dale Bandy, Billy Hahn and Brian Knorr.

Still waiting for fact-based evidence that Lamar Thornton is qualified to be our head coach.

Good info and you make good point. Do I think Boals would do this? I'm doubtful.

But I see a world in the not too distant future where top head coaches pay will hit $1 million and mid-major head coaches will head to places where you like the head coach, get more $, the NIL $ is already there, transfers come in more than go out, the beer flows like wine.... etc.

Did Christian have a good first year? He inherited a Sweet 16 team and couldn’t even repeat as MAC champ. It would have been comically embarrassing if he couldn’t win at least 20 games that season.

I argued then and all argue now, Christian was jumping off a sinking ship and Schaus gave him a lifeline. He was a season away from getting fired by TCU; he was never a better choice.

Do you really think Ohio State will hire a 13-12 coach from the MAC?

Do you really?

Really?
