I know it's about a 60 mile drive between Athens and Piketon, but do any of you have a theory about this horrible event? All kinds of rumors floating around about drug cartels...even from Mexico...possibly being involved.

Seems like too much of a "professional style hit" for it to be some hillbilly Appalachia feud. Maybe the 200 plants were only the tip of the iceberg? Could they have been growing large amounts outdoors as well?

Don't really know anything but what I've read about. Law enforcement is apparently looking at all possible angles and haven't ruled out the possibility of a drug cartel being involved, but they haven't indicated that it's a major working hypotheses either. About the only thing they've said conclusively is that it was very professionally done (if you can use such a term for such a horrendous action) and that it was well-planned out ahead of time. My first thought when I heard about it was that the perp was a member of the family, but law enforcement with their statements indicate that they are looking for outsiders, not family members, and the sheriff urged all remaining members of the family to stay vigilant and armed. Everyone else he said could relax. They are apparently still looking for the perps who may be far away from the scene at this point. I'm afraid that it may take awhile for find them and bring them to justice. Here's praying that they find the perps and get convictions and justice is served.

Mexican Cartels have been largely dismissed by experts who have spent a lot of time studying and investigating these things. This family had a long and troubled history crossing paths with many a shady character.

To quote the Fargo movie - I'm not so sure I agree with your detective work.

This is what a Cincinnati tv station had to say about it...

This isn’t the first time authorities in Pike County have discovered marijuana grow sites. And it isn’t the first time drug cartels have been top of mind in this small county. In 2010, state officials announced the seizure of 22,000 marijuana plants in the village of Latham — 15 miles west of Piketon — and said they suspected a connection to Mexican drug cartels.

Then, in August 2012, Ohio law enforcement officers found “a major marijuana grow site in Pike County with suspected ties to a Mexican drug cartel”

Blaming it on Mexican drug cartels is good PR ("it couldn't be people from around here") but bad police work.

You may want to update your sources, the Mexican thing was simply not their MO, and outside of propaganda part, really doesn't fit here. But hey, it sounds great.

The news reports I've heard out here never used the "Mexican".
They did say that the way the murders were done (execution style, multiple shots to each victim) was consistent with drug cartels and/or someone(s) sending a message.

What's also sad is that the message will be largely forgotten as soon as the last reporter leaves. Trying to get by in places like Piketon sometimes causes folks to make very bad decisions for short-term gain.
