Any of you get the Promises Lives mailing this week thanking you for your contributions to that campaign? We're still trying to figure out why the image on the cover was chosen. With 9 sexual assaults on campus since the beginning of this semester, it's kind of creepy. Surely we could have place a better picture than that on this piece.

In honesty, when I got the Promise Lives mailing,it never came to mind.

I also think the piece in last week's The Post from the O.U. police Chief put the issue of the campus sexual assualts in proper perspective.

According to the article:

1.They all involved people who knew each other

2.They all started as consenual

3.The majority invloved alcohol

4.2 involved people who met on Tinder

I'm not trying to deminish what is alleged to have happened.Sexual Assualt may be the term used in the Ohio legal system, but the term conjurs up images that don't appear consistent with what the Chief stated happened.

I will have to take a look at the image. I don't recall what it was.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Here's the letter from the police chief:

http://www.athensnews.com/opinion/readers_forum/ou-police...

and here is a link to the article where one of the young men has now been arrested for rape:

http://www.thepostathens.com/news/second-sex-crime-arrest...

I'm still scratching my head on rp's post above.

“A cynic is a man who, when he smells flowers, looks around for a coffin.” ― H.L. Mencken

A picture of students walking through our verdant campus makes you think of rape? I don't even know how to reasonably respond to that.

I read this post before I opened the OHIO envelop that contained the "Promise Lives" mailer. When I saw the picture I literally laughed out loud (And hard), remembering this post.

Full disclosure: Then I saw who the OP was and laughed again. Sorry Alan!

Sorry guys - just relaying what several women have stated. That said, put the sexual assault association aside, could we not have picked a better picture or at least sent out something that donors would keep and display - like a refrigerator magnet as opposed to a printed picture of who knows what?

The picture I'm looking at appears to be seven people celebrating their graduation. Am I looking at the correct picture?

Alan,
You raised the issue of the 9 reported sexual assualts in your orignial post.

I was just pointing out the circumstances surrounding these reported assualts,as stated by the O.U. police chief in The Post article.

As far as the rape arrest, according to the article, the male is not an O.U. student, was a guest of the victim and staying in her room.
I fail to see how this incident is in any way a reflection on the University.

Maybe any mailing that includes a photo of a male student needs to come with a trigger warning?

Alan, I don't doubt that you're relaying a reaction from someone else, but it doesn't make it any less silly. If you go looking to be offended, you'll always manage to succeed.

To be clear, sexual assault is not silly and it's a genuine cause for concern. I'm pleased that reporting of it seems much better than when I was in school, and that the university appears to take it very seriously.

No - the picture is of a single male in a hoodie walking in front of a building and he's partially obscured by the branches of a tree. You can't see his face. Kind of a creepy looking picture. The picture that you describe would be a perfect picture for the Promise Lives campaign.

Mine has a picture of the happy graduates on it. Very nice picture for celebrating doing such a good job on fund raising.

It's a student wearing a sweatshirt. I could go out and take that photo a million times over on campus. It definitely doesn't make me think of sexual assault, though I agree that I would have picked a more compelling photo for a publication.

That's a real stretch to connect that to sexual assault. I just think it's bad photo.

O.U. must have used a bunch of different pictures.
Mine showed 3 girls with backpacks walking on campus.

Better look closer to see if the creepy hoodie wearing hoodlum is lurking in the shadows.

You have to stare at it and let your eyes unfocus. Then the creepy hoodie-wearing hoodlum appears.

Not really Ben - just want to see my tax dollars spent wisely (now I sound like someone in OCF's party). :)
