I'm a big fan of Aerial America on the Smithsonian Channel. For those who aren't familiar with it, each episode is a flyover tour of a state of our great Union. This past Sunday was an episode on Ohio. I didn't have to wait long to see if Athens would be featured: it was the first segment!

Discussed/shown was:
  • Homecoming (they filmed during it)
  • The Marching 110 (basically the whole thing)
  • Ohio U.'s party reputation
  • The Paul Newman keg story
  • nice overhead views of the campus (duh)

They showed the 110 performing during the Homecoming parade and them practicing at Peden. It was quite enjoyable.

As a non-Ohian, I thought it was a nice overview of Ohio. The showed the serpent burial mound, O$U, the 3 Cs, the Armstrong Museum, Marietta and some other stuff I cannot recall.

They did talk a bit about the recent Amish beard cutting scandal, but no mention of any snake-handling churches. Guess you can't always get fair and balanced coverage...

I don't endorse the furry lifestyle, but when the Bobkitten is involved things can change mighty quickly...

For those of you with AT&T Uverse, it is on channel 118 (1118 for HD). It is on rotation this week.  The schedule is at the following link...

Along those lines, often the TV show How the States Got Their Shapes on the History Channel often features cameo interviews of people/students on the Ohio campus.  I often see Copeland Hall or Chubb Hall in the background.

Is Brian Unger (OU Alum) still hosting this show?

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

He does (or did, I don't know if the show still runs new episodes as there are only 50 states   ).  The show's very interesting.

I had no idea Unger was an Ohio grad.

It's a proud day when you find out a Bobcat argued bird law with Charlie Kelly, stole the rights to Kitten Mittens and interviewed Seth Galifinakis about his church's chili cookoffs.

I like the show, but think sometimes the things they focus on are just weird when you only have an hour to hit on the high points of a state's features.  For ohio specifically, the beard cutting scandal, Tattoo-gate & the Lebron James betrayal all seemed odd and short-sighted to cover when they have 200 years of history to pick from.  The OU feature was awesome though, and right at the beginning of the show.

After the initial shows literally detailing how the states got their shapes, it has covered a variety of topics, featuring some states (or portions thereof) more than once.
