Today, I verbally accepted an offer to work for the university. Of course, I'm extremely excited for this opportunity as it should be a perfect fit for my strengths, experience, and interests, not to mention I have a good relationship with some of the people currently in the department.

Considering I graduated in 2008, of course I still have a lot of youthful energy. I'm sure I won't be allowed to, nor was I planning on, mixing in socially with the student crowd, so life in Athens as a young professional is going to be drastically different from life in Athens as a student. I'm sure there will be opportunities to build relationships with the staff and faculty, but I wonder if any of you can give me some insight into living in Athens.

...and possibly some help in researching apartments. Thanks!

I hear Palmer is a nice, quiet street with lots of mature residents.

By this, I assume you mean that you'll be trying to score with as many "597's" as possible? If so, good luck to you sir!

You lucky bastard.  I recommend reliving your college years as thoroughly as possible.  Tear it up!

Also, the term "597's" is hilarious and one that should be used more often.  Well done.

Dorm room phone # 's all start with 740-597-XXXX. At least they used to. I'm not even sure there are still phone's in the dorms.

You can get a phone if you want.  I've never met anyone who had one...

I'm going to have to disagree with SBH though...  I'm on Palmer at the Mill end...  The students aren't the problem, but the Mill Street construction crews have been quite loud this summer.  In some cases, they've worked all the way until 3 A.M.    In fact, I felt the earrthquake the other day but thought it was construction because my house is constantly shaking.

It's tricky, especially if you're not a medical or graduate student. I'd recommend finding a place away from the university. They end to be quieter and cheaper. But hey, there are a lot of people you know still around, so it shouldn't be too hard for you.

I've found some places that potentially look suitable on craigslist. I'm not against living in Nelsonville if there's a good deal presented. Hopefully I can set up some appointments to see places this weekend.

I lived in Nelsonville for a month. Wouldn't discourage, wouldn't recommend it.

If you need the help of an old townie, send me a PM.  I was away from Athens from 1964-66 and again in 1970-1978, so I know a little bit about re-orientation.

No way I'd ever live in Nelsonville.  It smells bad.

Also, look east on 50, quiet and an easy drive in on 50.  Moved out that way last year and I have enjoyed it.  There are a lot of nice people that way.

If I was 24 and living in Athens, I'd park my ass right square in the middle of court street.

Same.  I can't imagine living in Athens as a non-student working for the University or some other "stay away from Court Street" kind of job...  Too many temptations.

That said, I've actually seen more then one of my younger profs bartending in Athens.

And pay an exorbitant rent for a dirty firetrap? No thank you.

I just got back from Athens with a lease signed, September's rent and security deposit paid. Jeff, I took your advice and headed west away from campus. There's a nature preserve out by the defunct Dairy Queen in Albany. A small number of residences circle a big pond out there, and I'm told the neighbors are mostly med and grad students. Seemed like there's some good fishing action (I haven't fished in years, but I might be inspired to start back up again) and my landlord said I can use his canoe or rowboat whenever I like.

Also, Salaam is closed? That's so disappointing?

You sure it's not just taking a pre-FQ hiatus?

Your place sounds great, though. You'll have to invite me out.

I'm just about all moved in. Most of my stuff is actually in the place and I'll be there for good on Tuesday.

And Salaam isn't closed. It moved next to Donkey. I'm sorry for the confusion, but there is a for rent sign on the door of its former location in the alley by the Junction.

I have a question for everyone who lives in the area. Time Warner Cable can't provide service to my apartment, so I'm trying to shop for other cable/internet providers. My landlord recommended Brightstar for cable (I know nothing about them) and Frontier for internet (I've read several reports that speed is slow, like well under 1mb/second). Does anyone have recommendations for these services? I don't need a phone line.

I don't know anything about the local satellite TV providers.  I do have Frontier as my ISP, and I get about 3 Mbps download and just under 1 Mbps upload speeds, on average.  I have their second tier level of service.

Frontier works well enough out here for me in the Albany 'burbs whereas other services didn't.  I think they have a bundle deal for internet and satellite TV.  Hell, I even have TW cable though at times it seems kerosene fired.

GO south on that road past the dairy Queen and drive up to the 1st house on the left. Deck out back, Garage on the end of the house. Tell Jeff I sent you and ask him about  the local service providers and who he uses. HE is a good guy and will be glad to help you get settled. He aslo hunts a fishes the land behind the house across the street and should be able to get you out fishing. If you want to know who you are looking for go to this website.
