There are rumors of Liberty trying to move up to FBS and they have a 20,000 seat stadium to work with. Not a typical FCS job by any stretch.

Good Luck to Turner, he is a good man! Sam Rutigliano was the coach there for 11 years after his stint with the Browns.

I went into the stadium about 15 years ago when traveling through on business. They just spent $22 Million on the stadium last year and have quite a facility!

I always hate to see when coaches who have success at a program take a job at a larger university just to get fired a few years later. Turner Gill had a good run at Buffalo and would have been good for the conference if he was still there. Luckily, considering Frank isn't getting any younger, he can continue what he has built in Athens until he retires without threat of getting plucked up by Indiana or another school like that.

Just visited with my brother-in-law, a Kansas State grad. He informed me Kansas will now be paying on contracts for three head coaches. Not smart.

I was no fan of Jerry Falwell, but the reflexive religion-bashing has gotten out of control.

I believe that ESPN and its peers know this and exploit the Tim Tebow story in such a way as to elicit it.

Also, Mark Mangino didn't exactly set the world on fire during his first few seasons at Kansas. It wasn't until his sixth season that they broke through. And, the legitimacy of his eventual success could be questioned in light of the lack of institutional control ruling, the boorish behavior, etc.

So, I think it's shortsighted to proclaim or imply that Turner Gill is a bad coach.

I agree Putnam. I am appalled at the trend towards freedom from religion as opposed to freedom of religion. Atheists expect to have the freedom to hold their own beliefs, yet are unwilling to respect the rights of others to the same.

As for Turner, it took him three years to really make a difference at Buffalo. I think Kansas was crazy to not give him a third year. This year's Jayhawks were clearly better than last year's, and there is no reason to believe that next year's team wouldn't have shown similar improvement. I personally think that the big mistake Turner made at Kansas was starting from scratch with an all-new staff. When Grobe went to Wake Forest, he took most of his staff intact, and it helped him to succeed. When Frank came to Ohio, he brought in some that had worked with him at Nebraska, and many of the others had worked together at NMSU under Tony Samuel, that also helped. Gill, as I recall, elected to try to build a whole new staff from scratch at Kansas, rather than bringing the bulk of his Buffalo assistants with him, and I think that set them back quite a bit in year one.

I take issue with the criticism of those who criticize religion. Hey, I didn't bring it up. But if you're gonna no ask, no tell and Defense of Marriage Act--modern signposts of pure discrimination in rights and tax benefits...sure, homosexuality causes divorce...that's some good thinking...then let's at least prevent people of color and women etc from marrying and voting and having full rights.

Well maybe this isn't about religion so much as ability to think. So, let's talk football.

I'm starting to hear someone shoveling coal, and the wind is getting colder.

I personally have always treated everyone's religious beliefs with respect, whether I agreed with them or not.

Nobody was bashing religion, at least not until two people became completely defensive of a religious figure being bashed claiming that their faith was being attacked. For all the cries of freedom of this and that you seem extremely intolerant of differing points of view.

You have to have your eyes closed if you don't see the religious bashing going on everywhere. Putnam bought up Tebow bashing as an example. It is clear that he is correct about Tebow bashing; look at this story from today regarding Bill Maher bashing Tim Tebow.

Getting back to the thread, BL claimed Liberty was a crap school. On what basis? It has nice facilities. It has high admission standards. Its graduates do well. The remainder of his post makes it quite clear the reason he labels it that way. I personally never cared for Falwell, but I happen to think Liberty is a fine school, and I am glad it exists. When you extend beyond criticism of Falwell personally to criticism of a school itself simply because it it religious, I don't think that is appropriate.
