OHIO had a pretty rough weekend in Carolina.
It started on the right note Thursday as the Cats were favored against North Carolina- Greensboro and handled them convincingly in straight sets: 25-15, 25- 16 and 25- 19.
Next up was No. 26 North Carolina Saturday who, the day before, opened their ACC conference losing to rival NC State. So the Tarheels may have been looking to take out their frustration on their next opponent while OHIO was probably pumped up after an easy win and now having another crack at a ranked team. This must have been a great match as it went 5 sets, with our Cats losing 3-2.
The next day, perhaps exhausted physically and mentally after that tough loss, OHIO took on unranked but a very strong 10-1 NC State team who, as I mentioned, had just beaten UNC. So the Wolfpack had to be psyched for this one. This Sunday match was the only one I got to see (live video which had great resolution plus instant replays). The Wolfpack looked solid with their strikers right at the net when they were spiking while OHIO often missed spike opportunities or were striking too far from the net to have much impact. Digs and sets allow for better front line play. Nothing seemed to be working. I would be interesting hearing from anyone who saw this match or the other two.
So the Cats end the OOC with a 5-7 record, with 6 of those losses against ranked teams, and the other one a loss to NC State who should get ranked this week. As we (former) New Englanders like to say, it's been a ‘wicked sick’ schedule that hopefully pays off for the conference season.
The MAC will be challenging but the ladies showed they can compete at a high level. I think they will be up to the task and continue their MAC dominance.
