Athens guy, has kids in the school system. Player coach-players seem to have fun playing for him-haven't seen players have so much fun in smith's era. I think he deserves it.

Im Coach Beau Goldschmidt. Athens raised, Lancuster made. I am a coach for a D1 baseball pipeline in center/SE Ohio. Love the Bobcats.

The start to the season has been very promising. He seems on his way to losing the interim tag.

The first two points are irrelevant.

Does appear to have team in right directions so should be considered.

That is where you are wrong-shows you clearly have not been exposed to an environment such as this. Having a connected players coach with a high G.A.S. level is everything to a player, especially in D1. Trust me, I would know. KNOW THE GAME

I would agree that the players/coach connection is a big factor at the D1 level, much more of a factor than the HS level. You don't have to look very far into Bobcats baseball past to see the difference a change at the top can make. With that change came a massive boost in morale and really energized the program.

Carbone = 1 MAC championship in 24 years
Smith = 2 MAC championships in 8 years

I think I agree with you, but I have no idea what a "G.A.S. level" is? Can you explain?

2 MAC championship under Rob Smith. I'd say that's pretty good.

Seasons, not tournament runs. The one MAC title we were average in the regular season and go hot on the one weekend. Sorry, that’s not a season.

He was 159 - 230 career at OhIO! That’s a .408 winning percentage! Against a horrible schedule

Was 75 - 107 in MAC play! That’s a .412 winning percentage in one of the weaker leagues in America.

Sorry, if that gets you excited you need to evaluate what good is! No one would accept that from Basketball.

Two winning seasons

Stats don't lie but neither does hardware.

The program that Smith took over was so far behind the times you couldn't imagine.

His two tournament titles and only winning seasons happened in the first 5 years and his best team had some hold over players. Look at the results when the roster turned fully over.

Yeah and his first roster had 8 PITCHERS. 8. 4 of them either quit/got cut/injured. He converted 3 infielders to pitchers that season. 2013 go ahead and check it out. I'm not a conspiracy guy but the previous regime may have sabotaged the roster b/c they were pissed "their guy" didn't get the gig.

Ok, so why or how do you explain the last three years? Those Carbone’s fault? Covid saved the job last year as they were well on their way to another poor season. If you are excited about a .408 winning percentage over 8 years, then I don’t know what to tell you. How many times did they fail to make the MAC tournament?

I'm not saying I'm excited about a winning % below .500. Just want to make it clear that Smith had to dig this program up from the grave. Not only recruiting and roster management, but also equipment deals (used to have to wear hand-me-down gear that previous players used), revamping the strength/conditioning program (Carbone players used to pull of what they called "perfect games" if they could go through an entire lifting session without breaking a sweat, I was there to witness it), completely upgrading the facility, I could go on and on and on.

To be able to manage all of that and still make 2 MAC tournament runs is impressive regardless if the regular season records were let downs. If it were so easy, where are all of Carbone's rings at?

Carbone went out idolized by everybody on the outside and left behind a dumpster fire. Period.

Again, he dug it out, then by his record, started digging his own hole. Give him a pass for his first two years, I’m all about that, then judge him when the roster totally flipped and he owns his final 3 years. Tell me those final 3 left you with a wooden bat between your legs?

Just to clear a few things up.

Carbone was not left idolized by as many as one might assume. He always had his good old boys supporting him being basically an adopted Athens son, but he stayed too long. Once Toadvine passed away, the program was never really the same.

Making the MAC tournament was harder in the past. During Carbone’s era, there was either no MAC tournament, 4 teams, or 6 teams until his final few years. Takes the randomness of getting hot at the right time away. It’s much easier to limp into the playoffs now, especially with eliminated programs.

Ohio had deals with Easton, Akadema, New Era and Adidas. I’m not sure what else you want. The only hand me downs were jerseys and practice equipment, but that has to do with the athletic department in general. Ohio was always above average in equipment deals at least through the 2000s.

I have only one question before I decide if I think he deserves to be the full time head coach. Does he live in Athens or in New Albany?

Haha, a guy who just got promoted as an acting head coach in college baseball probably couldn’t afford the gas to make that type of commute and cause that level of controversy. Now if you drop the “New” that town might fit into the budget a bit better.

And I can assure you, a HS recruit doesn't give a s*** if the coach is from the town or if his kids are enrolled in the local school system.
