The latest from today's The Athletic (Keith Law) has him ranked as the 50th draft eligible player. If that plays out, he will be a mid/late 2nd round pick.

50. Joe Rock, RHP, Ohio
Rock missed last spring for academic reasons but has been an ace for the Bobcats this spring, working at 93-94 with an above-average change-up, with his slider starting to develop but still not quite average; that last pitch might be better if his arm wasn’t as late relative to his front leg landing as it is now.

MLB.com has him ranked as their 85th best player which is still very good. Rounds 2-10 of the draft start up at 1pm today, so we so we should see him drafted, hopefully pretty high. Draft streams on mlb.com.

Here is the mlb write up:

"Rock cracked Ohio's rotation as a freshman in 2019 and made a Cape Cod League cameo at the end of that summer, then disappeared last spring because he was academically ineligible. He got back on the mound in the All American Collegiate League during the summer and had scouts flocking to see him during the fall. He threw a seven-inning no-hitter against Morehead State in his second start of 2021 and has enough helium to possibly surpass former big leaguer Dave Tobik (third round, 1974) as the highest-drafted pitcher in Bobcats history. After sitting around 90 mph with his fastball as a freshman, Rock dealt at 93-96 with riding life on his four-seamer in abbreviated starts in the fall and has operated in the low 90s this spring. He still has room to add plenty of weight to his 6-foot-6 frame, so he should continue to gain velocity. He also has picked up power with his breaking ball, which combines slider velocity (82-85 mph) with curveball depth. Rock can miss bats with two pitches and also shows feel for a third with an effective changeup. He has a lower arm slot and some funk in his delivery, which led to 37 walks in 59 innings in 2019. But he's doing a better job of throwing strikes now, enough that scouts believe he'll remain a starter, and his mechanics provide deception"

68 overall is amazing! Estimated slot value is right around $1 mil so no matter what, Joe is going to be getting some life changing money.

You can't be super happy about the destination though...

That's the highest an Ohio University pitcher ever has been drafted (excluding players taken in secondary drafts that used to be held). It is the highest any Bobcat has been taken other than Marc Krauss, who was just four spots higher in 2009, since 1979 when Scott Kuvinka also was 68th.

I know it's ancient history, but Mike Schmidt was 30th overall. His signing bonus was a whopping $37,500, which was negotiated up after an initial Phillies offer of $25,000.

Rock, the Rockies' rookie. This has marketing possibilities.

Yes, Schmidt is the third-highest Ohio baseball draft pick of all-time. The highest pick was Rich McKinney at #14 in 1968. At #21, Steve Swisher in 1973 also was higher than Schmidt. Both of those guys made it to the major leagues but didn't fare well.

Rock at #68 is the highest any Ohio pitcher has been taken in the primary draft. Dave Tobik was the #2 pick in the 1975 secondary draft and had a good MLB career.

Joe signed for full slot value - $953,100. I assume he will be reporting to short season rookie ball soon to get some action in yet this summer.

Put a stopwatch to this, and it took :023 secods to produce a google result. That was hand timed so, there may be a slight error in the actual time. I do not believe he has reported anywhere yet.

Actually it took me less time than that to not find an assignment. What took you so long. I just thought maybe someone might know something that wasn’t on the internet. Your crap gets old real quick.

Sure folks know what is up, but if it was wanted to be public knowledge, it would be public knowledge. Keep snowflaking.

Actually, if you paid attention you would know that MLB went from 400 minor leagues to 120 teams. The Rockies did away with their Rookie Team and their Extended training camp team. They are using the Pioneer League as a farm system to their farm system. So, there, I have given you a hint.

For those of you who are challenged by Google, Rock signed a $953,100.00 contract, which was the full slot and is in Arizona which is NOT a league but a self contained Rockies camp.

Could I have just googled Joe Rock? Sure. Was just trying to get some BA chatter going around our highest draft pick in decades.

The AZL is brutal by the way. I've been to about a dozen of these games, not fun. At least he has $950k in his account to help him through.

Joe gave up 1 ER in 8 innings over 4 appearances with 11 strikeouts and 1 walk. He allowed 5 hits. Very good start to his professional career.
