Is this a one-and-done grad transfer?

So he had a 16 rebound game against Jason Terry's kid who is 6-11?

He could be a good role player and people maybe wouldn't gripe like about Wiz.

His father is JJ Searls, who was a student manager for Larry Hunter.

Man, between Ben Estis, Chase Boals and now this - getting the sons of the old mid 90s Bobcats gang back together.

Ted has Vic as a 2 year guy, in the class of 26, in the recruiting grid (thanks for updating!). Do we know is this true?

Vic played 4 years at Ashland and is a grad transfer, so I just assumed he only had 1 year left, his COVID year. Unless he got an additional redshirt one of those years at Ashland maybe?

I'd be surprised if all but Searls see game action with the exception of mop up minutes.

I got blasted for asking this about the young Boals, but you have to wonder if any of them would be playing D1 basketball if not for the familial connections? The other 2 are walk-ons so whatever but this is a scholarship player, I assume.

Seems to suggest 1. Maybe Wiz really isn't coming back? 2. Boals could be feeling hopeless on recruiting big men with D1 credentials and isn't even going to bother with the time and energy of it this year.

I think for sure Ben and Chase are here due to family/friend connections. As walk-ons, as long as they are good teammates and work hard in the weight room and practices, I'm perfectly fine with that and glad to have them.

Victor I think might have been on Boals radar due to connections (isn't that true of all recruits to some extent?) but I think he's being looked at as a legitimate 1-year contributor off the bench. Nothing wrong with adding a solid bench guy, who you're familiar with, and likely who came on the cheap IMO.

We've seen Boals in contact with other portal bigs so I don't think it's fair to say he's given up on the task. More like hedging his bets by investing in other ways in a 4-year big in Evans and a cheap 1-year big in Searls. Neither may be a superstar difference maker next year, but he's doing what he can to address it.

Good post. And it seems like a smart "money ball" move worthy of Billy Beane.

If that leaves more money to go head to head for a prolific guard/forward that was recruited by big names schools out of h.s. but got buried on the bench at one of those, then let's get a prolific guard and/or forward and win the MAC.

Wasn't sure about Searls, felt like all those COVID guys played 6 years. As for AJB, he is listed as a sophomore on OhioBobcats.com roster and I think he played in few enough games to get a redshirt if he wants.

Basketball is a minute = a year

I thought it was changed to 30%?

FIGURE 12-1

Hardship Waiver Criteria For injuries and illnesses occurring on or after August 1, 2022

Use the figure below to identify the values for first half and 30 percent of the season for the applicable sport. Then apply the values to the institution's completed schedule for the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship1 as follows:

1. When counting on the schedule to identify the first contest in the second half of the season, exclude the following: a. Preseason exhibition contests and preseason practice scrimmages that do not count toward use of a season of competition per Bylaw 12.8.3.1.4; and b. Bylaw 17 annual exemptions (e.g., alumni game, foreign team in the United States) except for the conference championship and other postseason competition which must be counted.

2. When counting the number of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has participated, exclude the following: a.

3. Please note, an individual who engages in outside competition during the second half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship, including competition while not representing the institution (e.g., unattached), does not qualify for a hardship waiver per Bylaw 12.8.4.2.7.

Sport                              Denominator2                                             30 Percent of Denominator                                     First Half of Playing Season

Basketball                     No QRSMTE = 30 With QRSMTE = 32      No QRSMTE = 9 With QRSMTE = 10                    No QRSMTE = Before the start of the 16th contest With QRSMTE = Before the start of the 17th contest

This is a good pickup. Experience is at a premium in the NIL Era

I've seen crazier things happen.

Ran into someone today from the Ashland area. I asked the guy if he follows the U's sports and he responded that he is employed by Ashland University and yes he is a big sports fan (he was after all getting ready to tee it up on hole number 1 so it is not surprising he follows the action).

I told him that I had gone to OHIO and that we will be receiving one of the former Eagles. This guy said Victor's name immediately and added that Victor is well deserving of a shot at higher competition. He said that Victor had a severely sprained ankle during this past season and his absence completely stifled the team offense. He said that Victor came to Ashland quite over weight and worked hard to drop (he said) over 50 pounds. That he runs the court well, was leading the nation in field goal percentage at the time of his sprain and can play with his back to the basket and score with either hand. That he isn't shy about banging down low and was a rebounding machine.

We struck precious metal with the Findlay transfer at guard and here is hoping we strike big man gold with new Bobcat, Victor Searls.

Great point about Schmock. That dude was a great one-year player for us coming from D-2. Will Vic be the next JT Shumate? Probably not. But I'll take the next Tommy Schmock (post-edition) anyday over a hyped recruit like IJ.

Was struggling to find any videos of Vic but found this one..

https://youtu.be/yKyYUWIcYE0?si=0lIvsGioJ8dwjKV4

Liked that he was aggressive in the paint and was dunking in traffic. Sounds like he has made quite a transition w/regards to his physical conditioning. Hope he can take it to the next level and give us some solid minutes. I think he can...

Those last couple of buckets were scored over Jason Terry's kid. While the Terry kid won't be confused with Webanyama or Chet Holmgren, 6-11 with long arms is still 6-11 with long arms.
