Just an update/thought. I always love hearing from fellow Bobcats who have seen potential recruits in action. I noticed that Jarron was on our recruiting board and so thought I would post.

I was at Flyin to the Hoop on Monday at Trent Arena in Kettering, Ohio. It is a yearly event for my Dad and I. In the past, I have been able to check out some great Ohio/National basketball while catching up with some recruits (Reggie Keely, DJ Wingfield, etc.) as well as some players we were recruiting (Steve Taylor and Kendrick Nunn out of Chicago Simeon, etc.)

I happened to be there to watch Wilmington High School play on Monday. While they were outmatched by Sunrise Christian out of Wichita Kansas (top 25 in the country, no fewer than 7/8 high Division I recruits), I was pretty impressed by Jarron Cumberland. A few thoughts:

1. 6'4"...maybe 6'5"....great size/frame....maybe 185 or 190. Plays very physical and doesn't back down at all.
2. Great first step to the basket.
3. Has no problem absorbing contact and was adamant about getting to the rack and converting or getting fouled. He was often attempting to drive/convert on players that were 6'6" or 6'7" and having to finish in among the trees (6'10" and 7'0")
4. He scored about 20 points and had somewhere around 7/8 rebounds (by my rough estimate). He was frustrated at times as Sunrise had athletes and length that I imagine he is not used to seeing (at least in that combination). It was hard for me to judge if his frustration was a sign of a competitor not liking to lose (they lose by 15 or so) or someone who has a hard time managing frustration/obstacles on the court. It is unfair for me to judge in one game.....I think the former seems more likely.
5. What I didn't see was too much ability to pull up and hit a jumper. He hit a few threes...mostly from almost a standing shot position. He would definitely have to work on the ability to drive and pull up as well as be able to catch and elevate from 3 to score at the college level. That said, if he can add that element to his ability to drive, he could be an EXCELLENT wing/small forward at the MAC level.
6. He is definitely a DI level athlete...his defense and ability to create some turnovers were evidence of this.

Someone to keep an eye on..not sure if we will get him as I believe he will go higher with the development of a true pull-up jumper and quicker and higher elevation from range.
