Win the MAC…win a Bowl game in front of 5,000 people….win 11 games and finish in the season-ending top 25 polls, but have no chance to ever qualify for the NCAA College Football Playoffs….

Or

Win 8-11 games…qualify for the FCS playoffs and have a chance to win the FCS National Championship….z

I may be alone in this, but the FCS option's more appealing to me.

It feels like a far less subjective goal, and bowl games are basically just the NIT at this point. If you're not in the playoff, nobody cares, and as a member of one of the 2 lowest ranked FBS conferences, we're unlikely to be in the playoff.

My vote is for 12-1 and make the FBS playoff.

If FCS was so appealing why have 20+ schools transitioned up in the past 20 years? Travel would be greater and you really are not saving the money you think.

If we go 12-0 or maybe even 11-1 we can make the FBS playoffs so option 1.

The very top in my opinion is if the program can finish a season with 2 or less losses against a good non-conference schedule. 11-2 regular season places you in the conversation of the 5 or so G6 teams knocking on the door for a playoff spot. Up there with Boise, UNLV, Memphis, Tulane. A couple of seasons like that mixed in with consistency has the chance to elevate the Ohio brand.

This starts with stronger scheduling. No Kentucky's on the schedule which are a lose-lose situation. Play only P4's that win 60% of their games (past 10 years) and series with G5's that are 50% and up. Try to establish 1 for 1's with PAC-12 schools and top AAC.

Not sure why Kentucky doesn't qualify in your metric. Comes from great conference (SEC), has won 55% of its games over the last 10 years (70-56, .556). They seem like the ideal team to go for, notwithstanding our showing this year. A win is great for our program and is somewhat imaginable. Similar with Syracuse this year. Those should be considered games we can match up in. Very different from Ohio State next year. Not so sure how we will do with Rich Rod's new WVU squad.

FBS all day every day! Do I wish the process was fair for all schools, you bet, but I would not want us to ever give up and drop down! Keep on plugging away! Schools like Boise State show that there can be a path for schools who can consistently win. We really are on the right track, we just need to start winning more of the "power" games in the non-conference. Start doing that and we will get our chances!

Look at Boise State, they've had one loss and it was to Oregon so they have them ranked up in the Top 10. Imagine if next year Ohio takes out Rutgers and WVU while keeping the Ohio State game within 2 scores? That would set the program up for a playoff run.

I said 60% but maybe I should have said 65% since the records are inflated. BG's close losses at Penn State and Texas A&M are another example.

The problem is this is assuming no other G5 team goes undefeated or 11-1 and we have to be ranked ahead of them, which the MAC will almost never be.

Boise State's decade plus of success factors into their ranking. They have earned the benefit of the doubt. We haven't. We just had our hest season and got our asses kicked by a 4-8 SEC team and Syracuse.

It'll take several years to convince the committee we're at that level.

It has nothing to do with money for me. It has to do with competing on a level playing field, where the subjectivity is removed, and knowing that if you win your conference you advance to play for a national championship. That's not the case now, and it never will be for us at this level.

There are too many variables to control, too much subjectivity, and too many people with entrenched power and monetary interests who have no interest or incentive to make things more equitable.

20 teams moved to for the money. Not for football reasons. Not because of the mission of college sports. Just money. P5 welfare pays well, and they're happy to give up the right to play for something meaningful for a check.

Boise state is also joining the new PAC which idk if will get an automatic bid. But let’s assume they do that opens up space for an Ohio to get in. With no Boise this year if we beat Syracuse and Miami which we were close to doing. We are right in the mix of schools that could get the at large. The chances are low but agree with poster above saying if fcs is so good why are teams deciding to come up to fbs. If we dropped down would be cool to win the title for 1 year then once we did it we would want to be back up.

No it completely has to do with playing #1 Oregon and playing them tough only losing by 3 points. Another example is the year Cincinnati made the 4 team playoff out of the AAC by catching Notre Dame early and beating them. Once they made it of course Alabama steamrolled them but the key is having that one big game on the schedule and winning or performing well.

Its nice Boise picked up the 3 seed w/ 1 loss to Oregon but the computers only have them 15. It was a complete game of the system this year. By no means are they as talented and dominant as some of those Boise State teams of 15 yers ago.

Getting beat 41-6 by a 4-8 SEC team would disqualify is. Army was undefeated going into Notre Dame, got beat bad, won their conference and was still 20th in the playoff rankings before losing to Navy.

And all of those schools moved up just in time to watch the top 40 or so programs break away in the next 5 years. Smart.

Exactly. You give up the PR benefits, and a lot of the revenue, but you don't lose much in costs. Only one team has transitioned from FBS to FCS that I am aware of, and that is Idaho. Idaho only did it because they had no conference.

If you are going to drop down, a better choice would be to go all the way to Division II or Division III, so that you get some major cost savings.

Anybody who thinks we would be better off being FCS is a friggin' moron. The publicity we have received nationally for being on Saturday December 7th, for the MAC Championship (and winning), plus the discussion on GameDay with Timothee Chalamet, plus winning our 6th straight bowl is wonderful for our beloved university. So to those who don't like it, I say, Don't let the door hit you, where the Good Lord split you.

I believe the playoff does not actually guarantee the P4 champs all a spot, it’s just set up in a way that they will usually get those spots while a G5 champ is guaranteed to represent.

The 4 highest rated conference champs are guaranteed 1st round byes, then the next highest rated champ is guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. If Army would have beaten Notre Dame, won the AAC AND the Army/Navy game there was a chance they would have gotten in over the ACC Champ this year.

As Boise State is demonstrating, it also seems entirely possible that a G5 team could get in as an at large - would probably require a P4 win and some top-25 opponents, but it COULD happen.
