A little bit of a late start this year.

Southern Miss has fired Will Hall. After a bowl win in year two, SoMiss just hasn't found their footing in their new conference. Their last 10 losses stretching back to last season have been by at least 10+ points.

Fresno State and Utah State began the year with interim head coaches.

Vacancies as of 12/18:

Fresno State (new coach Matt Entz, current AHC and LB coach at USC, former North Dakota State HC)

Utah State (new coach Bronco Mendenhall, former BYU, Virginia and New Mexico HC)

Southern Miss (new coach Charles Huff, Marshall HC)

East Carolina (new coach Blake Harrell, ECU DC)

Rice (new coach Scott Abell, Davidson HC)

Kennesaw State (new coach Jerry Mack, Jacksonville Jaguars RB coach)

Ball State (new coach Mike Uremovich, Butler HC)

Temple (new coach KC Keeler, Sam Houston St HC)

UMass (new coach Joe Harasymiak, Rutgers DC)

Florida Atlantic (new coach Zach Kittley, Texas Tech OC)

Charlotte (new coach Tim Albin, Ohio HC) :(

Central Michigan (new coach Matt Drinkall, Army OC)

Tulsa (new coach Tre Lamb, ETSU HC)

North Carolina (new coach Bill Belichick, former Patriots HC)

UCF (new coach Scott Frost, former UCF and Nebraska HC)

Purdue (new coach Barry Odom, UNLV HC)

West Virginia (new coach Rich Rodrigues, former WVU and Jacksonville St HC)

Florida International (new coach Willie Simmons, Duke RB coach)

Appalachian State (new coach, Dowell Loggains, South Carolina OC)

Ohio (new coach Brian Smith, Ohio OC)

Marshall (new coach Tony Gibson, NC State DC)

Sam Houston State

UNLV (new coach Dan Mullen, former Mississippi State and Florida HC)

New Mexico (new coach Jason Eck, Idaho)

Washington State

East Carolina has fired Mike Houston. At one point this program was on the upswing and Houston carried his winning from James Madison over there, going to two straight bowl games. But they cratered to 2-10 last season and haven't been all that great this year, including a loss to a bad App State team and a blowout at the hands of Charlotte.

Rice has fired Mike Bloomgren. He went 24-52 and took them to two bowl games, one of which they had a losing record but qualified academically when no other teams were available.

I wonder if friend of the program, Spense Nowinsky, will get some calls for a head coaching gig this go-round?

Memphis is currently 7-1 with the 2nd ranked defense in the AAC, 5th in turnover margin in the country.

Kennesaw State has fired Brian Bohannon.

Kind of got a raw end of the deal on this one. The Owls are 1-8 in their first season of C-USA play, and he's 4-14 if you count last year's transition year as an Independent. Prior to that Bohannon built KSU into an FCS powerhouse, recording double-digit wins four times in seven seasons. His overall record was 72-38.

Rant: Appalachian State and James Madison unfortunately ruined the transition model. Being so successful so early has given other schools the idea that they "should" be doing the same.

Transition schools most always look for a reason to “upgrade”

Love a good Jeopardy firing.

Does that mean Cleveland Browns legend Charlie Frye is now the interim head coach?

Tom Herman though... what a career this guy has had. Highest paid assistant, Broyles Award at OSU. Texas head coach. Offensive analyst for the Bears. FAU might be one of the worst jobs in the country.

Fun fact about TH... 5 - 0 in bowl games. 60-36 career record. He'll be fine.

And if Albin gets a job somewhere else, put me down for a big spoon full of Tom Herman.

Come on man, they’ve only been playing D-1 football 21 years and have 3 (one shared) conference championships ! Something we can only dream of.

Charlotte has fired Biff Poggi.

It is getting a little interesting that all of the jobs in this cycle have come from non-power conferences so far.

Biff? Seriously? He should be fired with that name. Or at best, coaching at Miami-Ohio.

Ball State wants a new coach, not a Neu coach?

[Sorry, someone had to say it....]

Seriously, Neu did an OK job at Ball State. His first years were a struggle, especially 2017, but he did have Ball State at a competitive level from 2019 onward. He even won a MAC Championship, albeit in the Covid year. This year, Ball State was competitive in every game this year except for #10 Miami, and an embarrassing loss to James Madison. Ball State even played well against Vanderbilt (who beat Alabama). Unfortunately, he lost a lot of games by just a few points. I suspect that the close losses were his undoing, and that, if he had turned a couple of those 2-point losses into wins, he would have kept his job.

Ball State's coach before him, Pete Lembo, was a good coach, but Ball State parted ways with him, I guess, hoping to find the next Brady Hoke. In the end, Neu was not better than Lembo. Lembo has bounced back, and is now the head coach at Buffalo, and I suspect that, if he keeps at it, Neu will bounce back, too.

The fact that so many ADs are pulling the trigger on coaches less than 3 years in, let alone getting another chance to hire and fire their guy to replace them, is kind of shocking to me.

Idk some of these may be warranted. Poggi for example was in way over his head. Dilfer at UAB is probably the next one to go. Why sit around and wait if you can come up with the buyout money now? I know buyout money doesn't come easy in the G5, but it's not like they're paying Jimbo Fisher type dollars.

I think the Bryan Ellis of Alabama to Kent State may have legs. I just looked at the Flashes board and there are all kinds of rumors about Burns being involved in financial irregularities, including gambling. There are bizarre stories that he's borrowing money from assistant coaches, etc. Sounds like a first class scandal brewing. Or, maybe, it's just baseless internet rumors.

Biff is fantastic.

Not a Miami guy at all. This dude wore cut-off shirts on the sidelines. He looks like he's working in the weightroom or about to change your oil, not coaching football.

He was at Michigan under Harbaugh, by all accounts is a great football mind. Older guy. That was probably it for his head-coaching career.

Speaking of Miami..

Incoming MAC team UMass fired coach Don Brown. He is replaced in the interim with one of my favorite Miami coaches of all time, Shane Montgomery, who went 1-3 against the Bobcats from 2005-2008. One can only hope he's hired full time.

Still held in high esteem here in Newark. Montgomery quarterbacked Newark Catholic to 2 state titles.

I guess the problem I see with it is recruiting is in a state of flux right now. Next year rosters are to be trimmed back to 105 and still dealing with some COVID sixth year elgibility. 2025 is the first year of player revenue sharing. 2026 is the new playoff contract which could be 14 or 16 teams and w/o COVID years into the calculation. These years of change to me are excuses to hang onto a coach particularly if removing them will require a buyout.

TA with the 8 wins now has an extension through 2028 (signed to 2026 in 2023 and bumped to 2027 in 2024) and I think its a good position for Ohio to be in. Eventually the changes will settle down and new tiers established for programs at Ohio's level so when a new staff is selected the recruiting requirement will be better understood.

The dollars spent on these buyouts at G5 programs whether its 500,000 or 1,500,000 it is a lot relative to their football budgets and/or donor capacity.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

If we had Akron's football facilities we'd be in phenomenal shape. As I tour these colleges and campuses with rev share coming soon, those with upkeep to do are going to get whacked like no other. You're going to see revenue disproportions at the bigger level than you could fathom.....as if it wasn't bad enough between us and them.....

The recent tweet by the fired UMASS. coach’s wife was enlightening to say the least.she said they had 36,000 in NIL money, their opponents so far had over 40mil. Great stuff
