I said it somewhere else, name this guy the head coach and get it over with. Some consistency, continuity and keep the culture.

Does anybody know if the university can even give him the permanent job without interviewing other candidates? Either by law or by policy?

I could be wrong, but that is probably his best choice. Even if the AD makes him an offer, she probably won't make it quickly, and it would probably be a short term deal like the one she gave to Albin. I like the entire coaching staff, and I hope they are all able to find new positions. In a situation like this, they need to act fast, and take any good openings they can find, before they end up out of work.

I keep hearing this term, short term deal. Albin was extended for two years in 2022 through 2026, so he had a four-year deal with rollover clauses. He signed a five-year deal at Charlotte. Now, I personally think Albin had 100% earned the extra year (maybe even more!) and some better terms, but that’s a matter of opinion. I just think it’s odd that a four-year deal is short term and a five-year deal is long term.

As of about 10 minutes ago 247sports is not showing any Bobcats in the portal. In contrast Miami has five. Obviously that can change by the moment but it makes wonder if players are together on what they want to see going forward and are waiting to find out before making a jump. It surprises me that no one would be gone from any program. I think expediency is extremely important here.

I don't disagree that a four-year with rollovers is probably longer than a five year contract, but it also puts a different burden on him, and it is not standard in the industry. The real question is, how did Albin feel about it? What did he want?

As for Albin's first contract, it was a four year contract, but he could be terminated after two years with no penalty. Thus, in reality it was a two year contract, with an option to extend to four. Could Ohio get some coach from outside to move to Ohio on a contract that could be terminated with no buyout after two years? If an outside coach wouldn't take a 2 year deal, why should Smith? If he takes it, and isn't renewed, he may never get another head coaching offer. If he goes to Charlotte, he can expect Albin to retire in a few years, and for him to become the successor there, with a better deal than two years.

Ohio should either make him an offer for 4 years, or look elsewhere.

They ultimately did offer him a five-year deal at equivalent money. It was just too late. I can't believe we maneuvered ourselves into this situation. We had a great coach who loved Athens. Treat him with respect and he's here for the long haul.

That's it, exactly. There is no reason this needed to happen. But, now the AD gets to put her mark on the program, and Albin gets to start over at Charlotte.

Exactly.

It tells me he didn’t initially want to leave. Extra years on the contract makes it harder to poach for non p4s. I’d Charlotte had another 700,000 to pay off (I understand these are often negotiated after the fact) would or could they have done it? The shorter term can play to the advantage of a successful coach

Btw…there a plenty of college coaches on rollovers, lol. It’s not some novel approach.

Find new positions ? I would guess that Albin will hire the majority of them.

Remember that Albin is under pressure to get a staff quickly. Even though they aren't in a bowl, the portal is open and active. He needs to evaluate his players and his staff. He has to determine his losses in both areas, figure out what he has to work with, get active recruiting, and start looking in the portal. As a new coach, not knowing the players or staff at all, he's already behind. Every week lost at this point puts him further behind.

I believe they’re required to post it, but beyond that I don’t know how much of a process is required.

We’ll find out if he’s a great coach. Because he’s signed up for a Heisman Mode rebuild.

I already don’t care about the drama. We got dumped. Let’s hire the right guy and make this a blip in the continued success of the program.

Goodness, you’d think charlotte was 0-12. Its wasn’t. If he can keep the nucleus of the team and if they really have 10x our NIL, they’ll do okay. They had 28 transfer in last year, many from p-4. If Albin can evaluate talent like last year, it may not be as ugly as some think. On the other hand , it could be like his first year here only for different reasons,

100%. He's gone. Saw Albin a couple times at Bobcat Club events. He was basically an aloof, arrogant jackass while Coach Boals visited every table and thanked everyone for coming. Good riddance.

Come on, man. Another possibility is that he's just a bad schmoozer, no? I'm perfectly willing to throw Albin under the bus - the one he got off of to save his sick doggie - but he definitely came across as a D-level speaker at the best of times.

You know, "taking your sick dog to the hospital" should replace "TOS to" for future coach opening discussions.

As bad as the way he left makes him look, I do think Albin is just a very below average public speaker and wouldn’t judge him based on this, especially compared to Boals.

In agreement on the TOS replacement. Fully expecting a “Time for Ryan Day To Pick His Dog Up From The Hospital?” Thread if tOSU loses next weekend.

Kind of a funny story. My wife and I have been fairly generous when it comes to fundraising for the football program. I was told many times by an AD staffer that "Tim is so appreciative of your continued support. He really wants you to come down to Athens for lunch sometime or look you up when he comes to Columbus."

Since then I've introduced myself to him 2-3 times at Bobcat Club events, etc. Each time he responded, "I don't know the name. Have we met before?"

My wife periodically gets in a dig by calling me "Mr. Have We Met Before."

Do you have any personal experience meeting Solich, Smith, or Hauser to compare this to? I’ve never met any of them in person.

I had great experiences with Solich, including in the AD's booth at Kent State during Albin's second year. His wife was with us and was telling him what he could and could not eat. When she left to use the restroom, he had me watch the door so he could eat fistfuls of caramel corn.

Boals remembers peoples' names. Very approachable and appreciative of any support.
