Have to think this keeps WKU interested in staying south, though not a huge needle mover. Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois or Illinois State would make lovely additions to the MAC in my opinion. I'd love to see UNI simply because a purple team that plays in a dome would be fun. It does seem to me that the number of teams moving up has been increasing the last 5 years or so. I’m not keeping count but there’s definitely been some growth in that area. And only 1? team in Idaho moving down. I doubt they’re chasing the money but rather some prestige in being in the top? level. Back to Top L.C. The FBS is now slightly bigger in terms of participating football schools and it has usually been slightly smaller since the D1 split on the late 70's. So there have been slightly more move from FCS to FBS than from D2 to FCS. But there are about 60 move programs that are just "Division 1" in other sports that were in some other division, mostly NCAA Division 2, a quarter century ago. All of those schools with a football program are in the FCS. Well, I Kennesaw State didn't become D1 until aboyt 15 years ago and will be FBS in 2024 so that isn't exactly true. I think every other FBS school has been D1 since at least the mid-nineties. I'm pretty sure of that but I might not be thinking of one that wasn't. The drive to move to DII and FCS, is to level the playing field. Schools like Frostburg got out of DIII to give actual scholarships because it was a level playing field, where DIII is not! Stonehill and Lindenwood moved up to FCS because they both moved up to D1 for other sports, primarily hockey, and their new conferences insisted on football come along.
