Financial cutbacks? Steve French out at Akron and Ty Linder at Kent.

Sad to hear. I hate seeing people lose their jobs. It has been a rough year.

It looks like French still has his day job at WNIR but Linder worked in the athletics dept at Kent and his position was eliminated. At least he'll be on salary until Dec 4. https://www.record-courier.com/story/sports/college/2020/... / There is no good time to lose a paycheck, but losing one at the holidays is even worse. Maybe he can latch onto the ESPN+ team.

Over many years when Ohio would play at Akron, I would listen to Steve French on the post-game show. And consistently I wondered how many - or how few - people were listening.

Given Akron's paltry attendance, I'm thinking that Steve's listenership numbered in the 100s, not the 1,000s.

When I lived in St. Marys, Ohio, the radio station ran Bowling Green games.

I often wondered if the only person listening was the guy in the studio waiting for the commercial breaks.

I often wondered the same thing when I was doing high school games in Indiana back in the '70s -- especially the games we ran on tape delay. Then I'd stop in a local restaurant on the way home and they'd have the tape-delay game on or I'd get some comment about the broadcast during the week from someone I'd meet. One of the basketball coaches told me that they'd listen to the tape delay of their game in the bus on the way home. I imagine that high school games still get a fair amount of radio listenership but with ESPN+ becoming more pervasive, college games on radio are probably limited to convenience stores and other shops.

I've long felt the MAC has punched above its weight in quality of PBP guys. Hope Linder finds a good landing spot.

The change at Akron is due to a change in flagship stations. Akron alum Dave Skoczen will do pbp: https://gozips.com/news/2020/10/30/general-skoczen-tabbed...

Chad Bush, the voice of Eastern Michigan, was let go two days ago. Apparently he will be part of our call tonight. I know he and Russ are good friends.

Play by play team is employed by the school, not the station. Zips have moved around over the years from 1350 to 640, etc., but French was always part of the package.

Either they cut him for financial reasons or he decided to step back. I'm guessing the former.

So, what was the radio presentation for these two squads?
