Game 1 Observations

1) Too many penalties
2) 2 turnovers
3) poor tackling

In summary we were not well prepared for this game.

So many frustrating things about that game. If we clean up just some of the many mistakes we made, we win that game.

There were some positives, but in a shortened season we do not have time to �figure it out.�

I've seen crazier things happen.

Ohio played without several expected starter types tonight: DT Kai Caesar, S Alvin Floyd, WRs Tyler Walton and Jerome Buckner and OL Kurt Danneker.

Well, that explains some. Wish we knew why though...injuries or COVID-related?

Special Teams were hard to watch. Missed PAT, shanked FG, several very short punts.

Our placekicking problems reminded me of Frank's first game at Ohio, when he quickly lost faith in a freshman named Rossman (?).

We looked like we have no playmakers in the defensive secondary and two one-dimensional QBs. I was very disappointed in our inability to integrate a running game into the offense when Rourke was on the field.

Our right tackle (#78) just plain whiffed on several blocks. He should buy Rourke a latte today.

Not to mention all of the OL penalties.

A graphic ESPN showed early in the game indicated that the CMU starting OL had a combined total of 2 starts heading into the game. Yet, they appeared to be the more experienced unit.

This may be the year we finally see how well this coaching staff can coach up their talent. Without a win or two from out of conference opponents and not a full league schedule, we could very well go 3-3 and it wouldn't surprise me in the least. Miami and Buffalo looked really good last night. And Kent State is no slouch.

This was a surprise to me (an unpleasant one). I expected for there to be OL communication issues on both teams part...however, I expected our OL to be the stronger of the two units because of our experience edge. Granted we lost some important players, but CMUs was almost totally rebuilt, yet they were much more cohesive for most of the game. There were times when they moved the ball at will.

I put some of the blame for those sacks on Rourke. Overall, I thought he played very well, especially considering it was his first game ever. The one area of critique I have is his pocket presence. It seemed like he was looking down field and didn�t see anyone, and then hesitated and didn�t sense pressure. Hopefully he�ll learn to throw the ball away/dump it off in those situations.

The penalties on the oline were maddening

One thing I heard during the game broadcast was that CMU had practically a full spring practice schedule consisting of at least 10 full practices and Ohio had two. Those surely gave them more time working together to build them into a pretty cohesive group. I'm not trying to justify our poor play but the lack of practice time surely didn't help our lines.

Observations
1) Kurtis isn�t his brother why ask him to be? Let him get comfortable. Short routes. He�s not going to keep on zone read so why run it?
2) The offense doesn�t change. The formations, play calling. I can pretty much call what�s coming especially in 12 personnel which they seemed to be in all night.
3) Tackles are overmatched. Hopefully they get better with experience.
4) Run defense missed Kai. Little pressure generated with the front 4.
5) Specialists were so bad it was unsettling. Not sure that is cleaned up easily.
6) If CJ Harris is close to these two guys you should just play him and see what happens.
7) Akron could allow you to fix some of these issues and gain confidence. The East is good,

Travel squads were reduced from 76 to 70, which wouldn't seem to be THAT big of an issue. But maybe the financials have changed since last May and we just haven't heard about it. There was no official announcement about the change last spring.

Going -2 on turnovers on the road in game 1 against a decent (let�s hope) team and still having a chance to win at the end isn�t necessarily a bad sign. Lots of correctable things, some more worrisome (run defense, kicking game, 1D offense one way or another depending on the QB). But so many wrong takes in cfb come from concluding too much from game 1. Need to see more games.

I did like that the team didn�t quit. Fourth down stop to get the ball back at the end was inspiring.

Another loss in a very winnable game. Ohio is so tough to watch sometimes because they have enough talent to win but just cant finish these close games. In 2019, they were one 1 out of 5 close games, losing 4 games by 11 total points. Here we go again, another 3 point loss to start 2020.

Ohio still controls its destiny but it gets really old watching these close losses. Hopefully, we can have an enjoyable win at home vs Akron next week, who has a rFrosh at QB and four o-linemen who are rFrosh.
