It's that time of year. Who in OUr team will be recognized? In looking at the league leaders it seems that our defense is so well-rounded that in terms of tackles we don't have a Top 10 guy but still, here are my thoughts:

COY: Albin

OFFENSE
Tyus: 1st Team
Owen: 1st Team
Titsworth: 1st Team
Navarro: 3rd Team
Atkinson: 3rd Team

DEFENSE
Walker-Burgess: 2nd Team
Weaver: 1st Team
Johnson: 3rd Team
Taylor: 3rd Team
Parodie: 1st Team
Pearson: 3rd Team

SPECIALS
Spetic: 2nd Team

Are we sure we can't get a PhD year for Owen?

Ha. I'd take one for Leake, Tyus and Dustin Johnson as well.

Forgot to add Leake also (third teamer?)

Parker has four MAC POTW awards. Can a third teamer win MAC Offensive POTY? Is it a separate vote?

I thought at first this the list was the actual media list. I think that you thought the same thing. It is Bobcat1998's guess.

Nah I just thought 98 was lowballing Parker. I’m not sure how 4-time MAC POTW —including three of the last four—would be third string, but I guess we will see.

You’re right. There was a gap between those but that was due to beginning of MACtion. He won after EMU, Toledo and Ball…our last three games.

Trust me, I think that Parker is the hottest offensive player right now but I was looking at his stats compared to the rest of the MAC QBs and while his rushing stats are phenomenal, I don't believe voters would give him POY with 10 TD and 10 picks with under 2,000 passing yards. I hope I am wrong.

Parker has been on fire, there's no doubt that. But no matter how the awards play out, the BEST offensive player in the MAC is BG's Harold Fannin. He's probably the best player in the MAC overall for that matter as well. He's one of the best players I have seen in the MAC in all the years I've been following the MAC and I never, ever thought I would say that about a TE. I can't even image the kind of numbers he'd be able to produce on those BG teams a decade ago when they were killing it. The fact he's produced the way he has with what he has around him and the attention he draws is just ridiculously good. I know the MAC POY usually centers around a QB/RB/WR mold, but Fannin is a pro playing in the MAC. There's no one better than him IMO.

There is a quarterback rating that factors in both passing and rushing, and that is ESPN's QBR rating:
https://www.espn.com/college-football/qbr/_/group/15

In terms of points added on passing attempts, Parker is 8th in the MAC with 25 points added, but overall, he is #1 by a fairly wide margin in terms of total points added. His 36 points added on rushing plays is far, far ahead of Hampton of NIU's 7. Because of his mobility, and his blocking, his 10.5 points given up to sacks is also second best in the MAC.

To put his 64.9 total rating in comparision, he is #25 in the country, far behind Rourke at Indiana, who is #3 in the country at 85.7. Here are some prior Ohio quarterback ratings, with overall first, then (pass/run) in parenthesis:
2024 - Kurtis at Indiana 85.7 (74.0/-.6)
2024 - Navarro 64.9 (25.4/35.7)
2023 - Kurtis 59.7 (40.8/6.6)
2022 - Kurtis 73.6 (80.7/8.9)
2021 - Kurtis 51.3 (23.4/10.7)
2020 - (covid year) Kurtis 47.0 (8.4/0)
2019 - Nathan 75.3 (52.0/43.0)
2018 - Nathan 77.6 (38.4/35.8)
2017 - Nathan 73.5 (24.0/47.7)
2016 - Windham 55.4 (18.7/17.1)
2015 - Vick 50.8 (35.7/-1.8)
2014 - Vick 61.5 (14.7/12.4)
2013 - Tettleton 55.6 (40.8/2.0)
2012 - Tettleton 59.9 (59.7/6.8)
2011 - Tettleton 60.5 (67.4/18.4)
2010 - Jackson 41.4 (20.8/5.0)
2009 - Scott 39.8 (27.8/-1.5)
2008 - Jackson 51.5 (39.2/8.5)
2007 - Bower 29.8 (15.1/-5.9)
2006 - Everson 24.5 (3.2/-11.5)

A few observations from this data:
1. Nathan was the leader in rushing by QB, but Parker is right behind him, then a big drop to Tettleton and Windham
2. Nathan's passing score improved every year. Parker, right now, is where Nathan started in 2017. If Parker improves in passing as much in a year as Nathan did, he could have a phenomenal year next year
3. Kurtis started slowly in 2020 and 2021, but had a great year in 2022. After his injury, 2023 was not at good, probably partially due to the lack of off-season practice. In 2024 he is having a great year. While his raw numbers were actually higher in 2022, he is doing the numbers against better competition, so the final score is higher in 2024. Showing that he can do just as well against better competition is what he needed in order to secure a high draft position.
4. On the whole, Ohio's QB play has improved a lot from the early days.
5. Navarro has had one of the best QB seasons for any Ohio QB. Here are the 7 best:
2018 - Nathan 77.6
2019 - Nathan 75.3
2022 - Kurtis 73.6
2017 - Nathan 73.5
2024 - Navarro 64.9
2014 - Vick 61.5
2011 - Tettleton 60.5

Is it good enough for him to be first team all MAC? Idk. Bazelak and Semonza are the passing leaders, so they might be 1 and 2, with Parker at #3, but frankly, I'll take Parker. Without the picks he threw when he tried to play with a sprained wrist (or whatever) against Morgan State, he might be an easy #1 in the MAC.

He leads the MAC in rushing TD so that certainly will help, but I imagine it would give voters some pause to give a QB who is 11th in pass TD in a 12 team conference anything more than 3rd team QB.

9th in pass yards
5th in QB rating.
Tied 1st in INT.

Semonza and Gabbert are probably fighting for 1-2. Bazelak and Gleason have a good case for 3rd as well. I can see Parker 3rd, maybe even 2nd bc our record is better than expected, but I wouldn't be shocked if he was on the outside looking in.

And Fanin is POTY.

Yes, I think it won't be a QB this year. Fanin's draft stack is already pretty high. I wonder if he'll opt out of a bowl.

It may be given to Gabbert so he leaves and doesn't try for a 7th year. Fannin is probably the best player but no way he wins over a QB.

Fiami loses some key veteran players in many positions. Martin may need to bail.

I like looking at this data altogether. I'm amazed that Vick's first year starting was rated higher than any year Tettleton had. I assume there was no QBR rating for Kareem Wilson's offensive POY award in 1996. He completed 42% of his passes that year.

Correct. The QBR rating system was invented in 2006, and that is as far back as data goes. As far as the usefulness of the rating system, the problem with it is that it is "opaque". The data is computed by some arcane scoring system that is not possible for a fan to really understand, as it supposedly includes obscure things like, not only how good a play was, but how important it was. Since we can't compute it on our own, people are uncomfortable with it, and you don't see it cited often.

I do think that QBR has some usefulness precisely because it also includes thing like runs, penalties (e.g. grounding), and sacks, things that are in fact important. In the end, though, does it match up with how we intuitively grade quarterbacks? I think we'd all agree with the QBR that the best four years of quarterbacking were Nathan's three years, plus Kurtis in 2022, before his injury. I think we'd all agree that Parker had a great year, a year that was at least comparable to any year Tettleton had.

But, what about some of the other numbers? As you point out, the grade for Vick is "interesting", as it doesn't necessarily jibe with our memories. Looking at that grade in particular, I went back and looked that the individual games from 2014. Vick played very well in 3 of the four non-conference games (he struggled at Kentucky), but then was injured late in the first half against Idaho (a DL rolled over his knee after a pass attempt, if I recall). His grades pre-injury were outstanding, and would have been over 70, putting him in Nathan range. He didn't play again until the last four games. After his injury, he really was never the same again, and that's the Vick we remember. The rest of his career he graded 45-50, which is pretty much an average score for the MAC, but not close to Nathan level.

The same people that vote for POTW vote for POTY.

I’m thinking Fannin too but Michael Reghi doesn’t even pronounce his name right so we will see.

Fannin is probably the best player but no way he wins over a QB.

Let's be clear, Fannin isn't "probably" the best player, he is the best player. And he won the POY. I know BG wasn't on Ohio's schedule this year, but this kid is a monster and had a monster season. I saw about 8-9 of their games this year and he's one of the best players I have ever seen in the MAC. He'll be gone next season to the NFL or pro-P4 ball.

I am ok with this list outside of us needing another DB to get recognition outside of DJ. Perhaps Roman or Dustin. But overall, I'll take it.

Pretty interesting that Kent, a historically awful team, got 2 selections both wide receivers. It isn't odd to have a bad team with a couple good players, but you definitely wouldn't expect it at WR where they rely so much on a good overall offense.

Congratulations to all our guys. It’s been a very good season with all the new guys gelling pretty well to say the least. It hurts that the team out west got 7 first team members and we only had 2 but it’s sort of a beauty contest so we’ll leave it at that. Awards go to winning teams mostly so that helps. It does seem that we rotate guys a fair amount but I’m not sure of the numbers on that , but if that’s right it probably affects some of our guys getting all league honors to some degree.

Seven first team players for Miami compared to two for Ohio. So much for the individuals; time to see which is the better team.
