We are an 11.5 point favorite. I'd still pick us to win but I don't feel as good about it as I did a week ago.

Real season starts now. Ohio will be in 1st place in the MAC with a conference opening win.

I’m with you. I honestly think we are regressing game by game after some good indications in the Syracuse game. Hopefully we have hit rock bottom, can get some guys back and can find a QB who can consistently move the ball. If not , it could get really ugly.

If healthy, Navarro could play well in this game.

Bobcats win and cover.

Navarro is a huge if. A wrist injury that saw him not attempt a pass last week in warmups and post game press conference mention of him not being able to complete practices is really concerning. I would be shocked if he plays Saturday.

Throwing out their toughest game (tOSU) and easiest (Colgate), Akron vs the other two (Rutgers and South Carolina) really got pounded on the ground.

The two combined for 97 runs resulting in 8 rushing TDs.
(one rushing TD for every 12 carries)

Rutgers had a guy rush for 208 yards including a 62 yarder.

Seems like we can expect big doses of Tyus and Hunt. Expect some trickeration.

If Navarro can't play we might win but not cover. Maybe.

The plus side is that Poulos will likely have a full week of practice with the first team. But we'll still need a big effort from the D to get turnovers and field position. We had one nice drive that ended in a fumble and the only score was on a 51-yd drive that started after the D held on a fourth and short.

Game will be won or lost by the O-line, IMO.

Unfortunately, I agree. The offense has regressed in almost every way. The playcalling his been absolutely dreadful under Albin, but now we don't have the talent to overcome. 3 straight runs, followed by 3 straight passes the next series, with Tyus getting no touches at all only sounds good to a handful of BA posters who think he's big braining, and keeping teams on their toes.

They have to find an identity on offense and until they find a QB - I just say we go back to Parker and let him figure it out - and find a way to get Tyus 25 carries a game we're gonna be in some trouble no matter the opponent.

I can't pinpoint what went wrong for Parker, but this injured wrist didn't show up until around his 3rd INT vs future car salesman, so I hope it's just mental for him. It was one absolutely dreadful quarter, I hope he can erase that from his mind and let it rip. (Just not those 3 yard passes, from 20 yards all the way across the field)

I presume the point spread accounts for Navarro being out. In any case, I agree with the rest of your post. If Akron can't stop the run, expect a heavy load of Tyus, Hunt, Brune, and McCormick, plus occasional passes where Poulos will be throwing at a defense focused on stopping the run. There will presumably be some reverses, etc mixed in as well.

I for one am not particularly worried about the QB position. The whole team needs to continue to improve, but they are slightly ahead of where I expected. I still think they can win 7 this year.

Not a wrist injury, according to Albin. He's expected to play against Akron.

QB Poulos has obviously impressed as he has leap frogged Wither and Winters after being with Ohio 3? months. Wither has slid to fourth.

I like Poulos long term, but I really wonder if he can get up to speed fast enough to keep us in contention for a championship. Even Kurtis took like a year to figure it out. The rest of the team might just be good enough to be a serious competitor but, like the 1974 Steelers at the beginning of the season, "the QB room was a mess." Hopefully it ends like the '74 Steelers. (I know)

The MAC on the whole wet the bed with NIU losing to Buffalo, Toledo losing, Miami getting beat, and Ohio getting blown out. There is an opportunity there if the 'Cats get a few people back on defense and average QB play.

I can't be the only one thinking this, but I will ask it...what are the odds they held Navarro out just to protect his health and "save him" for MAC play? Waive the white flag vs the SEC team in an effort to be 100% healthy entering MAC play?

I don't disagree with that anything you've said here. MAC is BAD. But our playcalling hasn't been inspiring - especially when QB's are struggling. I haven't seen anything from Poulus that made me think he's anything more than just better than QB3 and QB4.

I think Parker is probably best to run the offense. He's been here. He had an embarrassing half of football, but you have to have a short memory. If he doesn't then maybe it is time to turn the page on him, but I dont know if Poulus is the answer. Unfortunately, we have no news on Winters - who every coach praised constantly - and now finds himself riding the pine pony when we need someone to manage the run game. So I'm even more scared about what our picture is for this season and beyond.

After listening to the press conference, I heard a lot about injuries of course and the fact that we must clean up the turnovers. The thing that was concerning was the statement that you want to be playing your best at start of conference. That may be, but we aren’t - mostly because of the previous 2 observations. He also mentioned his individual staff and total staff meetings to see if they can do things different in preparation for games.
He talked about playing 64 of the 74 players we took to Kentucky, which was the highest he could ever remember. Obviously, He’s looking for someone to step up to change the direction we’re seeing. I think he knows we’re vulnerable to lose a bunch of upcoming games if we can’t turn it around. Am I reading too much into this or not?

I think you are reading it about right. I would add that we have to keep in mind that Ohio has something like 50 players who are new to the system. This was a game that Ohio wasn't going to win anyway, especially in the second half. Thus, it was a good opportunity to play a lot of new faces and see what they could do against a good team. Hopefully, at least a few players did well enough to earn more PT in the future.

This is a very different season that ever before. In a normal season, Ohio comes in knowing who can do what, and only having to work the kinks out, so, after a game or two, they are pretty solid. With 50 new players, there are a lot more kinks to work out, and a lot more to learn about who can do what, and who performs best in what roles and situations. If the coaches do their job, and I think they will, this will be a season where Ohio gets a little better each week. Each week they will know more about what Ohio can and can't do, and they will be able to gameplan better, and execute better. Even as late as the Toledo and Ball State games, or even the bowl (if there is one), Ohio should still be improving.

Weather could be a factor Saturday. They say the remnants of the storm brewing in the Gulf could be in Indiana Friday night and Saturday, spreading rain into Ohio. There doesn't appear to be anything that will block it as happened a few weeks ago. That could help us because we rely on the run more than Akron does. We're averaging 180 rushing yds per game, Akron just 70. We average 170 passing pds per game while Akron averages 190. Rain and wind might cause both teams to rely more on the run, which should work in Ohio's favor. Hanging onto the ball will be big.

I wondered if Williams and Weaver were also being held out because of the opponent? Williams I thought was basically back and ready. I would rather have him ready to go this week anyway.

Unless he had some kind of a minor injury, I'd say the chances of that are near zero. That's just not Tim's style.

Yes to both, sort of, per press conference. Albin thought Williams HAD played some against Kentucky but was told DC made gameday decision to hold him back. Weaver could have played but they decided to give him another week.
