Why does Ohio have fewer three star and + recruits than many of the MAC schools?

Because Ohio turns good football players into great ones instead of always chasing a star player that never even hits the field

We lack the star power in this class, but when it's all tallied up we should fall in the middle of the Mac recruiting rankings. I checked 247 and Scout and we were ranked 7th and 8th in the Mac. WMU is on a different level than everyone. I would love to see what our coaches could do if they had talent like that to start with.

Go for it. I mean, if you want to find an excuse for this staff not to be bringing in better players, hey any excuse in a storm.

I espec like the thought that because we can do more with less, well, then we should be happy with less.

I get regarded as a pessimistic darksider? It's not that. It's that I have reasonable standards, hold us to them, and am reasonably objective and seeing.

Look, I very rarely comment on recruiting. But if you're going to evaluate recruiting with the same illogical, ignore-reality approach which most bring to our game performances ...then I'm going to keep pointing out the silliness of the logic.

Someone asked a question like this at the LOI signing day gathering this evening. Here's a fairly accurate paraphrase of what Frank said, from my notes:

"We are the coaches. We evaluate players using our own criteria. We have our own star system, and don't pay much attention to the rating services." He also went on to say that players were evaluated on the basis of their athleticism, their understanding of football, how they would fit into our system, and their character. This class, he said, had an overall high grade point average with many players having much better than 3.0 high school grade averages.

This class can be seen as a foundational class. We will win the line of scrimmage in the future, we do need add some star power to our skill positions in the future and we do need to get better at recruiting. Some of us make up crazy stuff, like the coaches saying Quinton Maxwell is the next Ben Roethlisberger, or Strobel is the biggest D-line recruit that we have ever recruited. We as fans have to be realistic, we cannot let our imaginations run wild at the same time the sky is not falling either. The coaches seem to know that they have to get better at recruiting. They did a good job this year of reinforcing the line of scrimmage, they will now need to improve the offensive and defensive schemes. Some recruits like Odom went under the radar, he had multiple injuries and a marginal QB, so he was unable to run up the numbers, but he could be a good one. Conrad played running back and looked tough on tape, he should be a pretty good open field tight end.

Nobody despises to lose more than I do. That's got me into trouble over the years, but it also made a man of mediocre ability into a pretty good coach. Woody Hayes
