I want one.

We have some good WR's (reid, smith, cope) and good options at tailback. With a maturing OL the missing piece is a QB.

And once Vick graduates things get even murkier. Who then? Sprague is not an option and Duckworth has been described by some insiders as a "miss."

Beg, borrow or steal...I don't care. Go get a real QB.

I've heard Duckworth tosses a lot of picks in practice but also that Windham has a cannon for an arm.

Watch Windham in the last drive of the BG game, and he was very impressive. He definitely has a live arm. If he hadn't missed a year, he might be the starter now. Maybe in the offseason he can pick up the parts of his game that are lacking, and be a factor next season.

I take a Boo or Theo type...guess that means the best JUCO QB we can get. We just really need to upgrade this position.

I, too, like Windham's arm...that's about all we know about him now.

So, the position still seems murky going into next year.

Next season will be Mr. Vick's fifth season as a Bobcat. He is the same Vick who threw four TDs in a game. He has Solich like toughness. I expect he will make everyone proud next season.

As for Duckworth, there's a reason why true Freshmen don't often start at QB. They usually have a lot of adjustment to make, including learning to read much more complex and varied defenses. In Duckworth's case, he also coming off a year off from injury. As fans we'll just have to wait and see how his career goes. If the coaches think they need a JUCO, I'm sure they'll try to find one.

4 TD's against an FCS team. He had a chance to do it against FBS teams this year, and didn't. 8 TDs in 8 games isn't getting it done.

I just posted something about this under another subject. I have been thinking the same thing.

After the games I watched today, I don't know why we can't land a top level QB.

I really hate to get sucked into your Negative Nellie Blame Game, however, you take Vick, I will take Isphording. 2008-2013 Solich, Albin, Gdowski, Dixon produced 18-28 passing TDs. 2012, TT produced 18 TDs. Vick in one start goes 14-20, 199 yards and 4 TDs. Fast forward to 2014 Ohio has Solich, Albin, Isphording, Dixon and Vick again only older and more experienced in the system. Passing TDs for the entire team drops to 11. Vick showed me back in 2012 that he could produce in this system. What changed was Isphording for Gdowski. Again, I feel it is Isphording who needs to step up and own this drop in production, though, Vick/Sprague would either probably man up and say they just did not execute the offense well. Then again, 2012 was the year Beau ran for 1,600 so lots different dynamics were in play. I knew I would regret getting sucked into your @#$% blame game. What I am sure of is they all have till next fall to get it sorted and have my confidence they will.

I'd rather have a JUCO or Transfer DT than QB. I'm worried about the middle of the D line next year.

It is true that Crutcher, McLeod, and Davis will be gone, but it's difficult for me to assess how the line will be next year. Tautuiaki and Purdum both return. Purdum started 2 games this year and 8 last year, while Tautuiaki has played in all but one of the games in the last two years. Here are the D-line tackles the last two years (tackles this year, last year):
Crutcher: 36, 50
McLeod: 39, 38
Tautuiaki: 22, 12
Purdum: 19, 30
Davis: 6, 11
Aloese: 3, redshirted
Porter: 0, redshirted

Basically the #1, #2, and #5 players are gone, while the #3, #4, #6, and #7 players return. Whether there is a problem or not depends a great deal on the rate of improvement of Aloese and Porter. Are they ready to step up, and capable of being solid backups?

In addition, you have a few other players that are redshirting that may play some next year, Frueauf and Stephens, plus possibly Kuhar, if he ends up at DT.

I expect DT probably to not be as good as this year, but how much difference there will be, I don't know.

Paul--thanks for calling bcat2 out on the false/garbage statistic. Enough of this pollyanna crap. Everything is not peachy if we've not beaten a MAC team with a winning record for about 30 games. There's reasonable debate..and then there's absolute refusal to be anything but an embarrassing cheerleader, beyond even what the University's own marketing staff would do.

L.C.--I still say that d-line is the most important position in football. If your d-line is disruptive, you have a good chance to win any game. That said, whether by scheme/choice or whatever, our d-line made little mark this year: few sacks and few tackles for loss. The returning guys who've played and the guys who return but didn't play (didn't play because they weren't ready/good enough, right?) mean that we have problems in my opinion. Also note that the guys who aren't coming back are big guys (300 lb area) whereas the returnees seem lighter. Love our 'backers, but there are holes on the rest of the D.

I agree that D-Line is very important. I would also say that this year Ohio had the best D-line they have had yet under Solich, and by a pretty wide margin, which is part of why the linebackers looked so good. Last year the d-line had more sacks, but at the expense of giving up a lot of rushing yards because the line was not asked to keep the blockers off the linebackers.

Just going from memory, Ohio has has ~15 sacks a year every year except last year, when they had ~30. This year they had about 22, about 50% more than they usually have had.

As far as size, I would say there is plenty of size returning. Lost are:
Crutcher: 6'2 304
McLeod: 6'5 282
Davis: 6'3 280

Returning you have:
Tautuiaki: 6'2 304 Sr
Aloese: 6'0 297 R-Soph
Porter: 6'1 289 R-Soph
Purdum: 6'3 270 R-Srr
Frueauf: 6'4 240 R-Fr, preferred walkon
Stephens: 6'4 245 R-Fr walkon
Williams: 6'3 278 R-So walkon (may play OL)
Kuhar: 6'5 275 R-Fr(may play TE)
Sayles: 6'3 268 Jr (currently plays DE)

There are a lot of players here, and enough with good size. Two of them we know can play, because they have played quite a bit already. They need to find two more that can play among the rest. If they can, great, if not, they may need a JUCO.

Windham is probably not the answer since he is sitting at 3rd string after 3 years. Duckworth has no live game action for nearly 2 years. If Vick goes down we are going to have Sprague as our starter.
Looking at The MAC East for next year we have a legitimate shot.

Bcat2 presented a valid statistic.

However, as usual, your statistic is invalid Monroe. You keep trumpeting this garbage "27+ game this" "30+ game that" argument. OHIO has beaten MAC teams with winning records in their last 30 MAC games. OHIO has beaten FBS teams with winning records in their last 30 games. The total number of games played is irrelevant when you're only considering MAC opponents.

Your garbage ass 30 game statistic is literally false. Perpetuating this falsehood is damaging to the preception of the program Monroe.

Depth charts aren't set in stone. Windham was set back by a year off from the program. He clearly has ability.

If he does nothing, he might stay at #3, but if he focuses, and works hard at improving whatever weaknesses he has, it is perfectly possible that he might move up the depth chart. In fact, before the season Isphording made some comments that he had improved a great deal, and was trying to get into the competition for the starter, but that he had started well behind the other two.

When our #1 QB is pulled in the 12th game of the season and temporarily replaced by a walk-on
I would say we have QB depth issues. I didn't see much development with our #2 and #3 QB's during this season.

I think we have a legitimate shot at the MAC East next year but we need an upgrade at QB backup strength. Recruiting topnotch 4 year QB's seems to be this staff's Achilles heel.

Okay. I played a bit loose with the facts. The last time that we beat a MAC team with a winning overall record for the entire season was 11/2/11 when we beat Temple. That was 43 games ago by my count, admittedly somewhat irrelevant because that 43 includes 15 non-MAC games.

Before that we last beat a MAC with an overall winning season record (Temple again) on 11/16/10. Add another five games with no victories over MAC teams with winning records. So, only one win vs. a MAC team with a winning record in our last 33 MAC games.

So, situation, I apologize for my slight mis-statement.

Yes, you cannot beat a team with an overall season winning record if a team does not have an overall winning record.

But is only one win against a MAC team with an overall winning record in our last 33 MAC games enhancing the "preception of the program"?

Tell me, please, when I should bring up that terrific game against Louisville last year. Most of us gave that one a pass as sort of a season opener, one-off event. In hindsight, not so much. In hindsight, that's what this staff gives too often.

It's not a "slight mistatement". Counting games against MAC teams without winning records is entirely misleading.

Why don't you go full blown Keith Olbermann on us and start saying it's been X hundred days since the last time OHIO beat a MAC team with a winning record?

OHIO is literally behind only one MAC team, NIU, in wins against winning teams since 2005.

You can start talking about that Louisville game as soon as you start talking about the Penn State, UL Monroe, Marshall, and North Texas wins (all winning teams). Those wins have all occurred after that Temple game you reference.

You've made it clear a MAC Championship is your #1 goal. But know this. THE ONLY MAC TEAM WITH A WINNING RECORD YOU NEED TO BEAT TO WIN A MAC CHAMPIONSHIP IS THE OPPONENT IN THE MAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. See Turner Gill's Buffalo team for details.

No he didn't. He's attempting to assuage concerns about our starting QB by pointing out that he threw 4 TD's in a game TWO SEASONS AGO against an FCS team.

edited after I realized I'm an idiot and thought this happened last season against Austin Peay. I guess it happened two seasons ago against Norfolk State.

And Vick had a career day v. Norfolk St. when TT was hurt. But I agree about the need for Ohio to upgrade at QB if it wants to take a step forward next fall.

I still recall a conversation I had with Jeff McKinney at a G&W tailgate party about 15 years ago. He said then, and it's still true today, that Ohio needs to recruit a 4-year QB, like Big Ben, or Leftwitch, to get the Bobcats over the hump. I thought TT might be that guy, but something happened after his sophomore season. Perhaps Duckworth will be that QB?

Paul even if your post was delivered to my doorstep via singing telegram Bcat still presented a valid statistic.

I chimed in because Bcat's statistic was erroneously labeled false by Mr. Alternative Universe himself.

I absolutley agree QB play has been down significantly this year. And I think LC has the most plausible explanation.
