Here's his hudl. I don't see a lot of passing, so I have no opinion on that, but he appears to be a very good runner.

He would be the icing on top of the cake for this recruiting class.

Who knows? Once he settled in at WR, he did some good things, and his game at QB vs. BG in....2009? or 2010? I can't remember exactly which year.....was insane, but he was not a QB. And that Bates insisted on playing QB until it was clear his senior year that it wasn't going to happen stunted his development into a football athlete that could dominate at whatever position he settled on.

The Super Bowl champs are having a similar problem with him now. He's got all the tools that he OUGHT to be able to do SOMETHING on the field, but they can't figure out exactly what.

This guys strikes me as the same on the physical ability front. His Hudl page has him listed as a potential QB, WR, CB, and FS. If we're recruiting him as starting QB material, I REALLY hope the coaches have scouted his arm more than the video shows. If it's as an ATH, then I think it's ok IF the coaches have discussed with him that he's not going to be a pure QB.

I won't disagree that he was a great athlete and has an NFL body and skill set. But a QB he was not. This young man also has a great skill set and size, and he's more suited for another position as well.

Sometimes athletes playing QB willingly move to other positions, and thrive. A recent example for Ohio would be Jelani Wosely. Examples like that are more common than situations like Bates, who resisted the move, probably to his detriment. I have to think Bates would be a better WR today for Seattle if he had put more into getting better at the position early.

That said, there just isn't enough on the Hudl for me to know much about Upton, and whether he has a great arm or not.  I also have no idea if he is being recruited as a QB, or for some other position, such as wide receiver (ala Brendon Cope or Mario Dovell) or for a defensive spot.

Les Miles is notorious for that at LSU. They recruit athletes and QB then convert them to RBs, WRs, DBs, LBs, whatever. Pretty darn good at it too.

Since we didn't end up getting this Tennessee QB, it might be worth taking a look at Sevier County QB Deuce Wallace. He has received some high interest from some big time programs, but no offers yet. I'm not sure if he would fit in as Solich's ideal QB though as Wallace is more known for his arm than scrambling ability. But he can still move around pretty well. Seems to want to go to an SEC school (like UT) but no offers yet, so there might still be some hope.
