Unfortunately the archives are gone that dated to pre-mid-2010, so we can't go back to see what BA's had to say about the recruiting classes prior to 2011. What did we think of the ones 2011 and beyond?

First, a look back at the 2011 class:
Starter - Russell, Crutcher, McQueen, Wells, Purdum, Powell, J. Johnson, Bass, Lucas
Have been regular contributor - L. Smith, T. Davis, Macer, Vick, Venham
Not Played much, or left the program - Eric Price, Welter, Fisher, Hammonds, Bennett, Bell, Haser, Curtis

From this thread:

Like many on this board, I think this is going to be a good class by MAC standards.  As has been stated, according to Rivals we have 5 three star recruits and a number two ranking in the MAC.

I'm with you on this. I think the number of 3 stars in general have been increased, but we aren't necessarily moving to the next level recruit -wise even though this appears to be a pretty good class. ..

Clearly shaping up to be a good class for us, at least....

From another thread:
Doc Bobcat wrote:
........my #1 impact player in this class however is DT Antwan Crutcher of Cleveland Glenville......turn him loose next year Frank......release the beast.

And another thread:
Uncle Wes wrote:
Its good to see Hammonds on the role call. He was an early verbal and not a lot of recruiting site have picked up on him. Its going to be a great class, I expect 8-10 will contribute as true freshman.

Those are some impressive highlight packages.

I'm especially impressed with our pair of linebackers, Ben Russell and Jovan Johnson, both look like they have a nose for the ball and will be big playmakers. ...

It's nice that Ohio has now gotten to a point that they aren't having to rely on a lot of unknown recruits. Some of those unknowns have turned out to be pretty good players, but others have never contributed much....This looks like an outstanding class. With classes like this, Ohio is going to be a force in the MAC for years to come, and will certainly get that first bowl game win one of these years.

I'd really like to know what "clicked" this year.  New recruiting coordinator with a better approach?  A new strategy in approaching players?  More positive stuff to talk about (IPF)?  Seems like this class is significantly stronger than any Frank has had here.  Why is that?

Doc Bobcat wrote:
...Hats off to Coach Brian Haines.....great first recruiting coordinator year.

Tomorrow I'll search out what we had to say about 2012, but I think the comments on 2011 were pretty much correct. It has been a pretty good class. Doc get's extra credit for nailing it on Crutcher, probably the most dominating player in the class.

It would be interesting to see how this class now compares to how well the same classes around the MAC have progressed.  If the class ranked in top 3 in the MAC back in 11; what teams would currently be ranked higher and lower?  Is there any way to measure?

If someone had the time, they could take all the the MAC recruiting classes from 2011, and look at the depth charts  for the various teams to see how many starters/backups the 2011 class have contributed for each team, I suppose. I don't think it would be worth it because in the end the key is winning on the field, anyway. My personal expectation is that a recruiting class will make it's primary contributions during it's junior and Senior year. Thus, the 2014 Bobcat team should normally be dominated by the 2010 and 2011 classes, and the 2015 team should be dominated by the 2011 and 2012 team, and so forth. Because of the issues with the 2010 class, this fall will be mostly 2011 and 2012 players, as will the following year. Using Scout.com data

2010 Recruiting Class
Toledo 850
WMU 844
BG 825
Akron 807
Ball St 803
CMU 576
Miami 566
NIU 544
Buffalo 466
Kent 422
Ohio 258
EMU 215

2011 Recruiting Class
Toledo 1076
CMU 1010
Ohio 937
BG 887
Akron 814
NIU 801
Buffalo 628
WMU 567
Ball St 564
EMU 542
Miami 531
Kent 487

Combining these, and making the erroneous assumption that recruiting ratings are 100% accurate (), and that coaching is in all cases equal (), you can use these to predict the standings for this fall, and you get the following:

West
Toledo 1926
CMU 1586
WMU 1411
Ball St 1367
NIU 1345
EMU 757

East
BG 1712
Akron 1621
Ohio 1195
Miami 1097
Buffalo 1094
Kent 909
UMass - unk

I think NIU will do better than this, and as for Akron, I suspect that many of the 2010-2011 players are gone, but that they have replaced them with a lot of jucos.
