There is something very different about this year's recruiting class. Prior classes have normally had less than half of the class from the state of Ohio. This year they are almost all from Ohio. Here is the percentage of Freshman recruits from Ohio (includes no-shows) on a year by year basis:
2005 (10/25=40%) - Febus, Ferrainolo, Hartke, Kenkel, Lawrence, Mellot, J. Meyers, Philibin, Schussler, White
2006 (10/17=59%) - Price, Karr, Luchsinger, Black, Posey, Williamson, Reece, Mercer, Fletcher, Hightower
2007 (9/20=45%) - Flading, Dunlop, Clark, O'Hara, Edwards, C. Meyers, King, Jackson, Flowers
2008 (7/17=41%) - Bussey, Carlotta, Greene, Harris, Herman, Thompson, Weller
2009 (5/21=24%) - Davison, Dovell, Taylor, Johnson, Edmond
2010 (6/13=46%) - Carpenter, Cochran, Ingol, Snyder, Tarrant, Kristoff
2011 (12/22=55%) - Crutcher, Davis, Hammonds, Johnson, Macer, McQueen, Price, Purdum, Russell, L. Smith, Wells, Venham
2012 (6/16=38%) - Clark, Laseak, Roberts, S. Smith, Tanner, Watson
2013 (9/20=45%) - Cope, Leavitt, Mangen, Morgan, Murdock, Poling, Quallen, Smart, Wood
2014 (15/18=83% as of now) - Lowery, Duckworth, McCray, Kuhar, Berger, Brumfield, Washington, Brown, Dicillo, Pruehs, Royster, Dudziak, Meyer, Langenkamp, Fox [The only out of state recruits are Walker, Irons, and Brunson]

What does this mean? Is this a one-year aberration? Is it a sign that Ohio's brand is continuing to increase, and that Ohio is becoming the #3 team in the state? Did the coaches reduce their travel budget to the rest of the US so that they could do multiple trips to Canada?

I look at this a bit differently. I think we really need players from FL, VA, GA, CALI, etc. I hope the recruiting budgets haven't been cut because if we just get OHIO guys other MAC schools are recruiting we will not win a MACC.

Casper, this time it was me being tongue in cheek. I agree that Ohio needs some out of state recruits, too, and I doubt they cut the budget. I just was surprised by how many of this year's class is from Ohio. Maybe there are just an unusually high number of good Ohio players this year.

There are good things about having a lot of Ohio recruits in that it helps make the team "local", and adds potential fans in friends and family that might attend games. In the end I just hope they get good recruits.

Where are you getting 18 recruits this year for Ohio? Viewing the recruiting page and counting Washington and Layton the count is 23. Regardless I think its a breakthrough class in-state and is the reflection of the bowl wins over the last couple of years. Interest in attending Ohio camps is soaring and the new IPF might be swaying opinions.

I am counting Freshmen only, not the Jucos, so I didn't include Clark, Murray, Bonnstetter, Boland, or Layton, nor did I include Jucos in previous years.

I missed that initially. What I think is more telling is how many of the Top 100 recruits of Ohio are signing with Ohio. The Top 3 instate signings for the MAC were signed by Ohio (Duckworth, McCray, Dudziak). I'm surprised how well Kentucky recruited the state based on their annually poor performance and struggles with Louisville (AAC) and Western Kentucky (CUSA). Ohio could up that total to 6 or 8 a year that would make the program pretty competitive I would think.

Bowling Green with its location has an edge by being able to tap into Detroit and Chicago while Ohio's never recruited well in those markets. The reliance upon Chicago recruiting by the Michigan schools was surprising to me. NIU doesn't have to move that far out of state with all the talent in Illinois. Ohio's strategy seems to be #1 Ohio In-State, #2 JUCOs for depth, #3 ACC/Big XII under the radar guys. Back in the days of Grobe, Ohio was about 70% In-State with some 3 star guys but a lot of guys that were destined as career backups. The bar is raised so if the staff doesn't find players in-state who meet that bar, they'll opt for a JUCO instead or an out of state target. That is why the instate percentage has dropped to 40-50% and the sharp spike this year means they're cleaning up instate.
