Honestly all we need is a good bowling ball RB, a few quick DB's and a S or two and I'll be satisfied with this class

I definitely want a good RB. I'd take a giant bruiser, though I think we could use a smaller more athletic guy considering Boykin and Blankenship are both the bruising kind. Daz is quick, but I'd still like a nice spread option style back.

I feel as though DT is the most forgotten position in football, and losing Huynh and Jones is going to be enormous. We have to be prepared for the possibility of Trae Clark not coming to Athens, so I would like to get a JUCO defensive tackle who can push to start from day one alongside Crutcher.

I don't believe the situation is desperate.  If Kendrick Davis will play inside, that would be a great start. Brandon Purdum was on the field as a RS Fr.  Justin Haser did too.  I would trust John Taylor as much as most JUCO transfers I have seen and Wesley Gilbert has good size with potential.

That Casey Sayles kid will be a really good pick up if he sticks. He is still hoping for an offer from Nebraska as a TE but Nebraska is waiting for a juco TE to make his decision. I have watched him play a couple of times this year and he has some talent.

FYI I am jealous that you guys have Frank Solich. I am a Nebraska fan and was really disappointed when he got fired after a 9-3 season. He is a really solid coach and has definitely done some wonderful things for Ohio. It is kinda funny here in Nebraska a lot of the fans still love Solich and on gamedays you will see flags that are half Nebraska and half Ohio.

I proudly display a half Ohio, half Husker flag.  Incidentally, I regard, as do thousands of Big Red fans and many neutral observers, that Coach Solich's last team actually went 10-3.  After all it was his team and coaching staff that won the bowl game that brought the win total up to 10.

Well said!  Wish Frank were still in Lincoln, but happy for his wonderful success in OHIO!  Glad Bobcats appreciate him, unlike some Nebraskans.  Would love to see Cats go 14-0.  Excellent depth, solid leaders, resilient team, growing and enthusiastic fan base and great coaching are a winning combo.

Shout out to the Nebraska fans.  I for one dig that we have so many followers out there.

Its turned me into a bit of a Nebraska fan.  Especially now that they are in the Big 10.

On the whole I think Ohio does a lot better getting Freshmen in than taking JUCOs. With Freshmen you get some gems in the rough, and you have time to improve them. With JUCOs they are what they are, and the "name" schools take the cream of the crop, so for the most part Ohio ends up with role players, not stars, or even starters. Defensive line is probably the hardest of all positions to recruit for, and thus the JUCO players on the defensive line are probably more picked over than any other position.

As a result, defensive line is not a position where Ohio has done particularly well bringing in JUCOs. . On the defensive line the players they have brought in over the years are Alan Goff (2006), Corey Moncrief (2008), Brad Spivey (2011 - did he ever enroll?), and in this year's class, Wade Wells, who already left, and Ty Branz. Ty Branz seems to be getting more playing time than the ones that came before him.

I'm not going to say that Ohio never should recruit JUCOs. They have done well at some positions, like QB and WR, with players like T3, Boo, Nwokocha, and now Matt Waters, and at other positions also got solid players in Errik Ejike and Patrick Tafua, among others. JUCOs can help, but they aren't always the best answer.

Unforgotten and underrated. There's a reason why the SEC dominates college football every year. It's because their defensive lines are so disruptive and athletic that no one can either A) run the ball on them or B) protect the QB long enough for four quarters so the QB doesn't get hit or make a mistake. Win the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball and everything else is cream cheese. A good O-line and D-line can make even the most putrid of offenses and defenses look at least somewhat competitive.

Boy, what is the deal with Rivals and Scout?  They have only 7/8 recruits for us and only the 2 Coffman guys are at 3 stars.  I know we love to say the recruiting services are of no value when ranking MAC teams and 4 years out our recruits have proven to be pretty good.  Seriously though, do they not get information on our recruits and when will we ever be in the top half af ALL BCS division teams recruiting wise?  As an example, toledo is at #59 in Scout with 7 of 14 recruits at 3 Stars.  Another close example is cincinnati with 6 of 16 3 star guys.

I still believe until we routinely get 10 or so 3 Star recruits, we won't really be getting better talent than anyone else in the MAC.  I know  we can DEVELOP talent but doesn't anybody else believe, like me, we should be getting some better talent at this time?

Casper71. There are so many signs Ohio recruiting has improved and you focus on stars.  Take stars out of the picture, look at the depth on this team, young players contributing, commits on board earlier, QBs the coaches want for their offense signing early.  Better wins, losses that just seem to have gotten away.  Agonize over stars all you want, I just trust the coaches who found Keller, Brazil, Foster, Scott, Herman, Allen, Carlotta, Lechner, Thompson, Neal H., Hastings, TT, Beau, Bryan B., Travis C., and all the others that took down Penn State.  They will continue to outwork other coaches and each year recruit from a stronger position.  They will continue to find under the radar players,  walk-ons will still be important,  they will continue to help recruits become bigger , stronger and faster while at Ohio.  Carefully look at the recruits, the coaches have, harder than rivals or scout ever will.  Things are getting better, I can see it.

My point was similiar teams are getting significantly higher rated players.  I stated that we develop players well but it would be nicer to START with a higher rated player and watch them improve to an even higher level.  If Toledo can be ranked #59 why is OHIO down at #80 or #100?  Just asking...

Do not assume that Toledo's higher rated players would be better for Ohio.  Ohio's  recruiting process is about finding what/who Ohio needs.  Per L.C. Alexander the S from Detroit has just been upgraded to 3 stars by Scout.  The services don't evaluate  every player or even most. I would expext Ohio's coaches in their evaluation of players find themselves passing on higher rated (by services) in favor of lower rated players they rank higher on their own board.  Coaches look at age, some kids have been redshirted in hs and have little upside to develop.  Some lower rated kids are younger, might have just appeared as top players in their senior year and still have huge upside potential.

Agreed, there is just far too many high school players for the recruiting services to evaluate. It's mostly speculation and word of mouth. I wouldn't fret about it too much. We've seen that these guys Solich gets turn out to be very good players.

Yup....it's the same thing every year.....I was hoping that someone would start a recruiting service that included the MAC but so far they stick with BCS and Big 10 type stuff.

Uh, after the last three or four weeks I rest my case.  And, I repeat...we do not recruit anywhere near the top of the MAC and now it shows.

We are NOT getting enough 3 star type players to finish business.  Very disappointing that after 8 years this appears to be about as good as it gets.  I repeat, if Toledo or NIU can get 8-9-10 3 star type guys why can't OHIO?
I'm tired of hearing we "develop" players.  It's like in school, if you start with kids who have 1600 SAT scores, all you need is a bit of improvement to be a top academic school.  If you start with kids who have 1100 SAT scores and improve them 20%, you're still way behind.  That's our story.  We are way behind in recruiting the kind of talent I thought we'd have in year 8 and what is needed to win the MACC.

End of story.

It would be interesting to look back over the last 7-8 years and see what correlations exist between recruiting class ratings, number of championships, division championships, overall wins, conference wins, all-MAC players  and NFL drafted players for each team.

All I know is somewhere along the way Kent, Miami and BG have caught up to us.  Toledo and NIU have always been ahead of us.  We have zero MACC.  I know we have some division titles.  We probably have fewer NFL STARTERS than anyone in the Conference.  With the exception of 3-4 guys, most of our players have been undrafted free agents who aren't around anymore.

I am familiar with UC who 8 years ago was not any better than us.  although they lost to Toledo this year they crushed miami.  And, the number of 3 star recruits they are getting now is far greater than it ever used to be and a lot higher than us.  To emphasize, we need to start out with recruits who are bigger, faster, stronger and better players at all positions.

Casper71 wrote " To emphasize, we need to start out with recruits who are bigger, faster, stronger and better players at all positions." Yes, and since coach Solich arrived that has been the trend.  As there has been more winning and facility improvements Ohio has become more attractive to recruits.  I believe L.C. when he says there is quality in the 2012 class and 2013 looks very good.  These coaches don't need stars to evaluate players. The check is in the mail.  Only 4 years ago this was a 4-8 team and now 8 wins  and a win at Penn State is time for heads to roll.
