It has been a popular topic that Ohio needs more 3-Star recruits. Below is a list of the 3-Star or higher recruits that Ohio has had in the last decade (S=Scout, R=Rivals, E=ESPN, 2=247Sports)
2003 (1) - Henley (S)
2004 (1) - Rossman (S)
2005 (3) - B. Jones (S), Bower (SR), Hinton (SR)
2006 (5) - McCrae (S), Goff (S), Nwokocha (S), Hubbard (R), Hodge (R)
2007 (1) - Braunstein (SR)
2008 (7) - Boo Jackson (SR), Hilton Dawson (SR), Tafua (S), Gerald Moore (R), Tremayne Scott (R), Bussey (E), Britain (e)
2009 (7) - Lechner (SRE), Hughes (RE), Fortune (R), James Davis (E), Woseley (R), Phillip Bates (R), Jerry Gross (R)
2010 (3) - Prior (SRE), Kozak (R), Omar Leftwich (R)
2011 (14) - Tyler Knight (R), Blankenship (SRE), Robak (R), Russell (RE), Landon Smith (S), Crutcher (SE), Price (R), Tony Davis (S), Welter (SR), Fisher (R), Haser (S), Hammonds (S), Bennett (S), Powell (R)
2012 (10) - Edmond (RE), Wells (R), Gibbons (S), S. Smith (SR2), Schany (RE), Trae Clark (SR2), Mike Roberts (R2), Chris Murray (R2), Windham (2), Laseak (2)
2013 (>6) - Walsh (RE2), Wyatt (E), Murdock (R), Alexander (S), Brown (2), Morgan (2) This list is incomplete because not all players have been ranked by all services, and also many players tend to get re-ranked in January based on their Senior year performance. It will end up more than 6.

Germano was the recruiting coordinator from 200?-2009, Isphording was the coordinator in 2010, and Haines in 2011-2013.

My thoughts as I look at this list:
1.In the early years, the 3-star or better recruits often were either over-rated, or had other issues.
2. In the middle years many of them were transfers
3. The overall trend is to get more all the time, however the one recruiting class under Isphording was a step backwards.
4. The recruiting classes under Haines have been very good.
5.More recent 3-star recruits have mostly been good players
6. Many players that didn't make this list turned out to be very good players, Note that not one of the players that were drafted made this list (Mitchell, Cohen, Price, Brazill)
7. The 2012 class was hurt badly by no-shows and eligibility issues, losing Wells, Clark, Roberts, and Murray. Some of these might re-appear in next year's class as Jucos.
8. If you exclude Jucos and transfers, you can really see that the trend is up, and that 2010 was bad. The numbers are 2003-1, 2004-1, 2005-1, 2006-3, 2007-0, 2008-4, 2009-6, 2010-0, 2011-11, 2012-8, 2013- >6

What effect has grade inflation had on these numbers?

I can't answer that. As a result I tend to use a different indicator - the number of other offers that the players received. There shouldn't be inflation in that number, and it shows the same trend, and the same dip in 2010. I only posted this because several people had said that "we need more 3-star recruits." I don't disagree that it is always good to have better recruits. The data shows that the trend is up, meaning that the teams 4-5 years from now should be better than today.

Haha - good question. Here's the list of those rated so far by 247Sports. Cedric is rated 80, which is 3-stars. Dorian is rated 79, which is a very high 2-stars. Note, though, that Dorian is rated 80/3-stars on their composite rating, which I think is a rating they pick up from other services. Thus, before we're all done I have no doubt that both Cedric and Dorian will have some services that rate them 3-stars.

My point has always been that instead of 3-5 three star guys, I'd like to see 7-10 EVERY YEAR.  Then, we will make reall progress as OUr staff coaches them up.  For example, Toledo has 11 this year!  Wouldn't it be nice to START with that kind of talent...

So basically you are asking for what has happened 4 of the last 5 years and will likely be 5 of the last 6 once the recruiting services re-evaluate the senior class

Using the same method, I show 13 for Toledo. Just from a quick glance at the MAC schools, Toledo probably leads in this regard, with CMU second with 12.

In another month or so the signed LOI's will be in, and the kids will have their final ratings. After it's all over, I'll revisit this, and do a count for all the MAC schools. I'm guessing Ohio will be in the top 3-4 schools in the MAC.

Has a bit of nasty in him. He will have to learn pass protection, looks like his team runs 99% of the time.  Good prospect.

That's impossible for me to guess. All of them look good on film to me, so to me there isn't any one of them that couldn't get rated up. I don't claim to be a scout, though. Part of the determining factor as to who gets up-rated will be whether the kids submit senior film. Let's take Lavon Brazill from a few years ago (now with the Indianapolis Colts). He probably should have been a 4-star recruit, but he didn't play his junior year, and never submitted a senior film, so he was given a raw 2-star rating from scout, and a 2-star/5.0 rating from rivals, which was their minimum in 2007.

The fact that not every kid submits films is one thing that makes the ratings a bit more suspect once you get down to the 2-star players.

Well, if he submits that film, a bump to 3 stars is quite possible.

The dude knocked down almost every kid. Ratings are overrated. pun intended. Santonio Holmes was a three star recruit for tOSU coming out of Florida. I can say he's had a good college career and stint with the Steelers. Also, Aaron Craft was a three start recruit coming out of Findlay and hes considered one of the best guards in the country. It can also be the other way around were a recruit is five star rated and gets injured and never plays or never lives up to the hype.

And indeed Leavitt gets his bump to 3-stars from Scout.com.

I guess I have a problem with including players who don't show up. I would tend to drop such players from the numbers to get more meaningful trends. The counting of someone who doesn't show up for whatever reason doesn't make a lick of sense.

I agree. I always drop the no-shows. Of course, when you look at the turnover numbers that I posted in another thread, Ohio signs less verbals than almost any other MAC schools. The more no-shows you have, the more you can offer, so I'm sure the other schools have as many or more no-shows. We just don't follow those schools, so we have no way to know.

Maybe it's because most of our best recruits committed early, but this year it just does not feel like like we're finishing off our recruiting as well as we have in the past with the higher level talent.  I think this year we've been guilty of signing way too many guys with very few other offers.  I wanted to see us win more of those multiple offer situations instead of just signing guys without much competing interest.  I mean we just beat out Stony Brook for a guy......c'mon that is ridiculous.  I sure hope there are a few surprises left to save the day.

Excluding FCS offers, and excluding no shows, here is the average number of competing offers for people that signed with Ohio by year:
2006 - .93
2007 - .75
2008 - 2.00
2009 - 1.31
2010 - .92
2011 - 2.50
2012 - 2.69
2013 - 3.03 (based on the people we know now)

I would guess that had some of these guys not committed to Ohio so early, they might have gotten even more offers.
